AKARI IRC SURVEY OF THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD: AN OVERVIEW OF THE SURVEY AND A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE POINT SOURCE CATALOG

  • We observed an area of 10 $deg^2$ of the Large Magellanic Cloud using the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. The observations were carried out using five imaging filters (3, 7, 11, 15, and $24{\mu}m$) and the prism disperser ($2-5{\mu}m$, ${\lambda}/{\Delta}{\lambda}{\sim}20$) equipped in the IRC. This paper presents an outline of the survey project and also describes very briefly the newly compiled near- to mid-infrared point source catalog. The $10{\sigma}$ limiting magnitudes are 17.9, 13.8, 12.4, 9.9, and 8.6 mag at 3.2, 7, 11, 15 and $24{\mu}m$, respectively. The photometric accuracy is estimated to be about 0.1 mag at $3.2{\mu}m$ and 0.06 - 0.07 mag in the other bands. The position accuracy is 0.3" at 3.2, 7 and $11{\mu}m$ and 1.0" at 15 and $24{\mu}m$. The sensitivities at 3.2, 7, and $24{\mu}m$ are roughly comparable to those of the Spitzer SAGE LMC point source catalog, while the AKARI catalog provides the data at 11 and $15{\mu}m$, covering the near- to mid-infrared spectral range continuously.

  • We investigate the $SFR-M_{\star}$ relation of the infrared luminous galaxies selected in either $11{\mu}m$ and $15{\mu}m$ from the $5.6deg^2$ of the AKARI NEP-Wide field. From the constructed multi-wavelength catalog spanning $0.3{\mu}m$ to $24{\mu}m$, we select 3,408 S11 > $50{\mu}Jy$ galaxies and 1,896 L15 > $20{\mu}Jy$ galaxies which corresponds to $L_{IR}{\sim}10^{11}L_{\odot}$ at z ~ 0.5 and 0.7 respectively. Photometric redshifts of the selected galaxies were derived using LePHARE and Coleman Extended templates. ~98% S11 selected galaxies are galaxies with (median redshift) ~ 0.4, and ~96% L15 selected galaxies are galaxies with ~ 0.6. Star formation rates and stellar mass of these galaxies were calculated using MAGPHYS which derives physical parameters with SED fitting. In the SFR-$M_{\star}$ diagram, $11{\mu}m/15{\mu}m$ selected galaxies are located in the main sequence of star-forming galaxies at z ~ 1.

Helianthus tuberosus Extract Has Anti-Diabetes Effects in HIT-T15 Cells (HIT-T15 세포에서 돼지감자 추출물의 항당뇨 효과)

  • This study was designed to evaluate anti-diabetes effect of Helianthus tuberosus extract (HT) in HIT-T15 cells. There were 5 experimental groups according to treatment NC (0 ${\muL/mL$), HT2 (1.1 ${\muL/mL$), HT3 (1.5 ${\muL/mL$), IN2 (1.8 ${\muL/mL$), IN3 (2.5 ${\muL/mL$). Inulin (IN) was used as a positive control for the Helianthus tuberosus extract groups. Cell viability was significantly increased in the HT3 (1.5 ${\muL/mL$), IN2 (1.8 ${\muL/mL$), IN3 (2.5 ${\muL/mL$) groups, compared with the NC group. There was no significant difference in cytotoxicity among all groups. Cell survival by MTT assay with alloxan was significantly increased in the HT2 (1.1 ${\muL/mL$), HT3 (1.5 ${\muL/mL$) groups, compared with the NC group. Insulin secretion and NAD+/NADH ratio were significantly increased in the HT3 group, compared with the NC group. We found that Helianthus tuberosus extract increased cell viability, had a protective effect on $\beta$-cells, and increased insulin secretion level and $NAD^+$/NADH ratio in HIT-T15 cells. These results suggest that Helianthus tuberosus extract improves the diabetes-related factors.

  • DC and RF characteristics of $0.15{\mu}m$ GaAs power metamorphic high electron mobility transistors (MHEMT) have been investigated. The $0.15{\mu}m{\times}100{\mu}m$ MHEMT device shows a drain saturation current of 480 mA/mm, an extrinsic transconductance of 830 mS/mm, and a threshold voltage of -0.65 V. Uniformities of the threshold voltage and the maximum extrinsic transconductance across a 4-inch wafer were 8.3% and 5.1%, respectively. The obtained cut-off frequency and maximum frequency of oscillation are 141 GHz and 243 GHz, respectively. The $8{\times}50{\mu}m$ MHEMT device shows 33.2% power-added efficiency, an 18.1 dB power gain, and a 28.2 mW output power. A very low minimum noise figure of 0.79 dB and an associated gain of 10.56 dB at 26 GHz are obtained for the power MHEMT with an indium content of 53% in the InGaAs channel. This excellent noise characteristic is attributed to the drastic reduction of gate resistance by the T-shaped gate with a wide head and improved device performance. This power MHEMT technology can be used toward 77 GHz band applications.

A Survey of the Kumho River Pollution (금호강 오염의 종합적 조사)

  • In order to study systematic survey of Kumho river pollution, water analysis for 24 items was conducted at 16 sites surrounding the Kumho river system for 3 times from May 2000 to February 2001. Analytical items for the study of water quality are as follows; water temperature, pH, BOD, COD, DO, SS, electrical conductivity, oil & grease, ABS, phenol, T-P, ${PO_4}^{3-}-P$, T-N, $NH_3-N$, ${NO_2}^--N$, ${NO_3}^--N$, Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, Mn, Fe, Pb and As. The mean values obtained for water temperature, pH, BOD, COD, DO, SS, electrical conductivity, oil & grease, ABS, phenol T-P, T-N, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn showed $17.84^{\circ}C$, 8.04, $2.54{\mu}g/mL$, $5.64{\mu}g/mL$, $7.07{\mu}g/mL$, $8.75{\mu}g/mL$, $600.4{\mu}S/cm$, $0.19{\mu}g/mL$, $0.015{\mu}g/mL$, $0.29{\mu}g/mL$, $0.21{\mu}g/mL$, $5.22{\mu}g/mL$, $0.005{\mu}g/mL$, $0.007{\mu}g/mL$, $0.044{\mu}g/mL$ and $0.001{\mu}g/mL$ respectively. As, Cd, Cr and Pb are not detected. The mean concentration of phenol, $NH_3-N$ and $NO_2-N$ were found to be increased compared to the prior study for 3 years from January 1997 to December 1999, that of BOD, COD, SS, oil & grease and ABS were found to be decreased and the others are nearly constant. The effect of Kumho river to the Nakdong river pollution are as follows. The mean concentration of BOD changed from $1.07{\mu}g/mL$ to $1.42{\mu}g/mL$ before and after of introducing of Kumho river water respectively. The mean concentration of COD, electrical conductivity, oil & grease, ABS, phenol, T-N and T-P changed from $1.99{\mu}g/mL$, $221{\mu}S/cm$, $0.15{\mu}g/mL$, $0.006{\mu}g/mL$, $0.06{\mu}g/mL$, $2.21{\mu}g/mL$ and $0.08{\mu}g/mL$ to $2.44{\mu}g/mL$, $392{\mu}S/cm$, $0.16{\mu}g/mL$, $0.015{\mu}g/mL$, $0.07{\mu}g/mL$, $2.81{\mu}g/mL$ and $0.19{\mu}g/mL$ respectively.

A Study on Iron, Zinc and Copper Contents in Human Milk and Trace Element Intakes of Breast-fed Infants (모유의 철분,아연 및 구리 함량과 모유 영양아의 모유와 미량원소 섭취량에 관한 연구)

  • Concentrations of iron. zinc, and copper were measured in human milk samples collected longitudinally from 21 highly selected. healthy lactating women. And the daily milk and trace elements intakes of 14 exclusively breastfed infants were determined by the test-wei-ghing procedure and the direct analysis of milk samples at 6 or 7weeks postpartum. Significant decreases in iron. zinc and copper were found with time postpartum. Iron contents decreased from 0.33$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ at 2-5 days to o.21$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ at 12weeks. Zinc concentrations also declined from 4.15$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ in colostrum to 2.33$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ in matured milk at 12 weeks. Mean copper levels of colostum, transitional. and matured milk were 0.21$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, 0.34$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, and 0.26$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ respectively. Data indicated that the amount of milk ingested ranged from 432g/day to 1266g/day and the mean intake was 768g/day. Daily mean intakes for iron, zinc, and copper were 0.19mg, 2.10mg, and 0.15mq respectively.

Effect of SiC Particles Size on the Densification of $Al_2O_3-SiC$ Composite During Pressureless Sintering ($Al_2O_3-SiC$ 복합재료의 상압소결시 치밀화에 미치는 SiC 원료분말의 크기영향)

  • Effect of SiC particle size of the densification of Al2O3-SiC composite during pressureless sintering was investigated. Two types of SiC powders having average particle size of 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were used. Densification rate of the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles was slower than that of the specimen containg 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles. Although the relative density of the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles was below 90% of theoretical density after sintering at 155$0^{\circ}C$ the complete closure of open pores occurred. Therefore full densification could be obtained by subsequent HIP. On the other hand in the specimen containing 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles the complete closed pore was observed at 95% of theoretical density. Such a fast pore closure in the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles is likely to occur as a result of dense reaction layer formation on the specimen surface which is attributed to the high reactivity of small size particles with sintering atmosphere.

Electron Donating Ability and Contents of Phenolic Compounds, Tocopherols and Carotenoids in Waxy Corn (Zea mays L.) (찰옥수수의 전자공여작용과 페놀성화합물, Tocopherols 및 Carotenoids의 함량)

  • The antioxidative activity measured by electron donating ability was investigated for the breeding of the highest antioxidative waxy corn (Zea mays L.) and the research for the most effective antioxidant in waxy corn. The electron donating ability was $15.5{\sim}65.0%$. The contents of phenolic compounds and tocopherols and the absorbance at 450 nm were $102.3{\sim}323.5\;{\mu}g/mL$, $15.6{\sim}144.2\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $0.047{\sim}0.206$, respectively. The mean values of electron donating ability and contents of phenolic compounds and tocopherols of four black waxy corn were comparatively high, that is, 48.7%, $267.0\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $87.0\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The electron donating ability was significantly correlated with the level of phenolic compounds and tocopherols but not with the content of carotenoids.

  • Physical analysis of some composite films of outer packaging at process cheeses in Korea is as following. In comparison with four composite films, tensile strength is $72.2{\mu}PET/PVDC/PE/AL-vac/PE\;film\;MD9.55kg/15mm,\;TD8.95kg/15mm>79.3{\mu}PET/PVDC/L-LDPE\;film\;MD5.37kg/15mm,\;TD5.01kg/15mm>96.9{\mu}PE/PVDC/PE\;film\;MD5.42kg/15mm,\;TD4.73kg/15mm>61.6{\mu}PVDC/PE/AL-vac/CPS\;film\;MD4.65kg/15mm,\;TD4.22kg/15mm$. Gas transmission $O_2:N_2:CO_2$ is $72.2{\mu}PET/PVDC/PE/AL-vac/PE\;film\;1.81:0.74:4.2cc/m^2{\cdot}24hr{\cdot}atm>79.3{\mu}PET/PVDC/L-LDPE\;film\;13.4:6.4:34.2cc/m^2{\cdot}24hr{\cdot}atm>96.9{\mu}PE/PVDC/PE\;film\;15.3:7.1:42.0cc/m^2{\cdot}24hr{\cdot}atm>61.6{\mu}PVDC/PE/AL-vac/CPS\;film\;25.3:12.5:59.3cc/m^2{\cdot}24hr{\cdot}atm$ each other. And for preservation this were sealed to filths $N_2,\;CO_2$ gas or defilling ai (vacuum type) in the packaging and reserved less than $10^{\circ}C$ at refrigerator.

In Vitro Antibacterial Effect of the Combination of Galla rhois ethanol extracts and Sodium chlorate against Intramacrophage Brucella abortus

  • This study investigated the antibacterial effects of GR ethanol extracts (GRE), sodium chlorate (SC) and a combination of GRE and SC (GS) on Brucella abortus (B. abortus). The antibacterial activities of GRE, SC and GS towards B. abortus were evaluated by incubating B. abortus with GRE, SC and GS. Following treatment with GRE, SC and GS, B. abortus survival and intracellular proliferation in macrophages were monitored. In the cellular cytotoxicity assay, GRE, SC and GS are not cytotoxic at concentrations less than $400{\mu}g/ml$, 15 mM and 0.6GS (1 of GS, GRE $1,000{\mu}g/ml$ + SC 30 mM), respectively. The viability of B. abortus was markedly decreased in a dose-dependent manner in all treatment groups. In addition, B. abortus intracellular proliferation within macrophages was significantly reduced in cells treated with GRE ($400{\mu}g/mL$), SC (15 mM) and 0.5GS (GRE $500{\mu}g/mL$ + SC 15 mM) after 48 hr-incubation (GRE, p < 0.01; SC and 0.5GS, p < 0.001). Especially, in the treatment of GS, the synergistic effect of GRE and SC treatment on B. abortus in macrophage was observed. In conclusion, GS is useful as an antibacterial candidate against B. abortus, and can be applied in the field of meat and milk hygiene.
