  • In the presence of various clays, nylon/clay nanocomposites were synthesized by anionic polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam (CL) via monomer casting method. The effect of each clay on polymerization reaction was investigated and the change in gallery structure of clays during polymerization was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. When the three kinds of organo-clays were used in the amount of 2 wt% of CL, polymerizations were not successful due to an increase in viscosity during polymerization. Significant changes were not observed in the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites containing organo-clays with 1 wt%. On the other hand, composites containing natural clay up to 5 wt% were successfully prepared, and the composite with 5 wt% showed a decrease in tensile strength and elongation, and remarkable improvement in thermal properties.

  • To prepare biomass based nylon 6,5 copolymers, ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam and 2-piperidone, the monomers of nylon 6,5 copolymers, were synthesized respectively from lysine and 5-aminovaleric acid which were produced from glucose by the fermentation process. The copolymers were then polymerized by the anionic ring opening polymerization of them at $40^{\circ}C$, using potassium tert-butoxide as a catalyst and acetyl-2-caprolactam and carbon dioxide as initiators. The prepared copolymers were characterized with various analytical methods: their viscosity molecular weight ($M_{\eta}$) was as high as 30000 g/mol and polymerization yield was over 50%, and it was found that they were semi-crystalline polymers having melting point at $165^{\circ}C$ which was much lower than its thermal degradation point, $250^{\circ}C$. These polymers were expected to have good thermal processability and application fields.

  • Recently, fabrication process of thermoplastic polyamide-based composites with recyclability as well as impact, chemical, and abrasion resistance have been widely studied. In particular, thermoplastic reactive resin transfer molding (TRTM) in which monomer with low viscosity is injected and in-situ polymerized inside mold has received a great attention, because thermoplastic melts are hard to impregnate fiber preform due to their very high viscosity. However, it is difficult to optimize the processing conditions because of high reactivity and sensitivity to external environments of the used monomer, ε-caprolactam. In this study, viscosity as an important process parameter in TRTM was measured during in-situ anionic polymerization of ε-caprolactam and the solutions for problems caused by high polymerization rate and sensitivity to moisture and oxygen were suggested. Reliability of the improved measurement technique was verified by comparing the viscosity behavior at various environmental conditions including humidity and atmosphere, and it is expected to be helpful for optimization of TRTM process.

  • Polyarylate(PAR)-nylon 6 block copolymers of various block lengths were prepared by the anionic polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam using the polymeric activator from hydroxy-difuncrtional PAR and toluene diisocyanate. Phase separated morphology of PAR-nylon 6 block copolymer was suggerted from the thermal properties measured by differential scanning calorometry(d.s.c.). Partial miscbility between PAR block and nylon 6 block of the block copolymers was more evident at shorter length of constituent blocks. In binary blends of PAR-nylon 6 block copolymer with PAR or nylon 6 homopolymer, molecular-level mixing of homopolymers with corresponding blocks of block copolymer was supposed from the thermal properties measured by d.s.c..

  • Anionic polymerization of 2-pyrrolidone was carried out via PPBC/KOH catalysis. The effects of PPBC/KOH mole ratio, KOH concentration and temperature on polymerization have been investigated. It was observed that the highest rate of polymerization and maximum conversion were obtained when PPBC/KOH mole ratio was around 0.5. The maximum conversion and the highest viscosity were obtained when the concentration of KOH was 2 mole percent. It was also found that while the rate of polymerization at $50^{\circ}C$ was higher than at $30^{\circ}C$ in the initial stage of polymerization, the conversion and viscosity were decreased as polymerization time was extended. The rate constant $(k_p)$ of polymerization was determined by least square method; the values of $k_p$ obtained were $22.4\;l/mole{\cdot}hr\;at\;30^{\circ}C\;and\;191.9\;l/mole{\cdot}hr\;at\;50^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Isocyanate-terminated SBR-prepolymers were prepared from SBR-diol and excess toluene diisocyanate. These prepolymers were then used as initiators for the sodium-catalyzed polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam. The resulting block copolymers, presumably the structure of nylon 6-SBR-nylon 6, were confirmed from their IR spectra. The viscosities of these polymers were measured in phenol/tetrachloroethane and the molecular weights were estimated. The polymerization reaction was not affected by the change in concentration of catalyst, but significantly faster at $185^{\circ}C$ than at $150^{\circ}C$. And the initiator concentration of 0.5 mole % gave good results.

  • Nylons were synthesized by anionic polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$--caprolactam while varying the content of catalyst. Polymerization rates, molecular weights, mechanical properities and frictional properties of the nylons were investigated. As the ratio of catalyst to initiator was increased up to 1.0%, the polymerization rate, conversion and molecular weight were found to increase, and mechanical properties except impact strength were improved. Frictional properties were affected mainly by tensile strength and hardness. According to the study on the friction coefficient, product of stress (P) and velocity (V), PV limit, and abrasive wear rate, nylon synthesized at 1.0% of the ratio of catalyst to initiator showed the best performance for sliding machine elements.
