A specimen of Cu-35%Sn alloy has been subjected to the unidirectional heat treatment in an attempt to examine the evolution of microstructures under varying thermal conditions. The specimen was cast in the form of a cylinder 10 mm in diameter and 200 mm in length, which was then installed in the temperature gradient field established inside a vertical tube furnace. The furnace temperature was adjusted to make the upper part at $750^{\circ}C$ and bottom end part at $300^{\circ}C$ of the specimen. The experiment was terminated by dropping it into water after the 30 minutes holding at given temperature. By the rapid cooling, the high temperature phases, ${\gamma}$ and ${\zeta}$, were retained at ambient temperature with some of ${\gamma}$ phase transformed to ${\varepsilon}$ phase, especially at the grain boundaries of ${\gamma}$ phase. The presence of ${\varepsilon}$ phase was found to determine the nature of phase transformations of the ${\zeta}$ phase undergoes upon cooling. In the close area of the ${\varepsilon}$ phase, ${\varepsilon}$ phase grew separately out of ${\zeta}$, and adds to the preexisting ${\varepsilon}$ whereas in areas away from ${\varepsilon}$, both ${\delta}$ and ${\varepsilon}$ grew simultaneously out of ${\zeta}$, and formed a lamella eutectoid structure. The transformation to ${\delta}$ was found to occur only in slow cooling. The hardness on each phase showed that the retained phases, ${\gamma}$ and ${\zeta}$, could be plastically deformed without brittle fracture while the phases, ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\delta}$, were too brittle to be deformed.

The crystal growth and dissolution rates were calculated by solving a model equation, which involved the dissolution of the metastable phase($\beta$-HNIW) and growth of the stable phase($\varepsilon$-HNIW), together with the mass balance equation. The model has been successfully used to simulate available kinetic data for the $\beta$$\longrightarrow$$\varepsilon$ polymorphic transformation via a solution phase. From the effectiveness factor based on the two-step model, it was found that the surface integration contribution to the process was comparatively small, and a diffusion dependency decreased with an increase of the mass fraction of chloroform in the mixed solvents of ethyl acetate and chloroform. Appling these kinetics in process simulation allowed for the prediction of the product size of $\varepsilon$-HNIW.
The dielectric properties and phase transformation of poled <001>-oriented $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-x%PbTiO_3$(PMN-x%PT) single crystals with compositions of x = 20, 30, and 35 mole% are investigated for orientations both parallel and perpendicular to the [001] poling direction. An electric-field-induced monoclinic phase was observed for the initial poled PMN-30PT and PMN-35PT samples by means of high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The monoclinic phase appears from $-25^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$ and from $-25^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$ for the PMN-30PT and PMN-35PT samples, respectively. The dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}$)-temperature (T) characteristics above the Curie temperature were found to be described by the equation$(1/{\varepsilon}-1/{\varepsilon}_m)^{1/n}=(T-T_m)/C$, where ${\varepsilon}_m$ is the maximum dielectric constant and $T_m$ is the temperature giving ${\varepsilon}_m$, and n and C are constants that change with the composition. The value of n was found to be 1.82 and 1.38 for 20PT and 35PT, respectively. The results of mesh scans and the temperature-dependence of the dielectric constant demonstrate that the initial monoclinic phase changes to a single domain tetragonal phase and a to paraelectric cubic phase. In the ferroelectric tetragonal phase with a single domain state, the dielectric constant measured perpendicular to the poling direction was dramatically higher than that measured in the parallel direction. A large dielectric constant implies easier polarization rotation away from the polar axis. This enhancement is believed to be related to dielectric softening close to the morphotropic phase boundary.
The growth kinetics of Streptomyces noursei NRRL 5126 was investigated under different aeration and agitation combinations in a 5.0 l stirred tank fermenter. Poly-${\varepsilon}$-lysine biosynthesis, cell mass formation, and glycerol utilization rates were affected markedly by both aeration and agitation. An agitation speed of 300 rpm and aeration rate at 2.0 vvm supported better yields of 1,622.81 mg/l with highest specific productivity of 15 mg/l.h. Fermentation kinetics performed under different aeration and agitation conditions showed poly- ${\varepsilon}$-lysine fermentation to be a growth-associated production. A constant DO at 40% in the growth phase and 20% in the production phase increased the poly-${\varepsilon}$-lysine yield as well as cell mass to their maximum values of 1,992.35 mg/l and 20.73 g/l, respectively. The oxygen transfer rate (OTR), oxygen utilization rate (OUR), and specific oxygen uptake rates ($qO_2$) in the fermentation broth increased in the growth phase and remained unchanged in the stationary phase.
Ferritic plasma nitrocarburising was performed on pure iron using a modified DC plasma unit. This investigation was carried out with various gas compositions which consisted of nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon monoxide gases, and various gas pressures for 3 hours at $570^{\circ}C$. After treatment, the different cooling rates(slow cooling and fast cooling) were used to investigate its effect on the structure of the compound layer. The ${\varepsilon}$ phase occupied the outer part of the compound layer and ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase existed between the ${\varepsilon}$ phase and the diffusion zone. The gas composition of the atmosphere influenced the constitution of the compound layer produced, i.e. high nitrogen contents were essential for the production of ${\varepsilon}$ phase compound layer. It was found that with increasing carbon content in the gas mixture the compound layer thickness increased up to 10%. In the gas pressure around 3 mbar, the compound layer characteristics were slightly effected by gas pressure. However, in the low gas pressure and high gas pressure, the compound layer characteristics were significantly changed. The constitution of the compound layer was altered by varying the cooling rate. A large amount of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase was transformed from the ${\varepsilon}$ phase during slow cooling.
Plasma nitrocarburising is a thermochemical heat treatment, and can be used for plain carbon steels and low alloy steels to improve wear, corrosion and fatigue resistance. The process is performed on automotive parts, machinery parts and engineering tools. However, it is still facing problems in obtaining a mono $\varepsilon$ phased compound layer. Therefore, the aim of this research is to investigate the possibility of forming a mono $\varepsilon$ phased compound layer using a gas mixture of nitrogen and methane. It was found that high nitrogen contents were essential for the production of $\varepsilon$ phase compound layer and with increasing methane content in the gas mixture, $\varepsilon$ phase compound layer was favoured. In addition, when the methane content was further increased, cementite was observed in the compound layer. $\gamma$' phase was produced after 10 minutes treatment time and cementite was formed in the compound layer resulting in decreasing the thickness of the compound layer.

A three-dimensional multi-phase flow is simulated around a smooth tire. This simulation is conducted by solving Navier-Stokes equation with a k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model. The numerical calculations are carried out by modeling a multi-phase free surface flow mixed with air and water at the inlet. The numerical solutions show an intuitively resonable behavior of water around a moving tire. The calculated pressure around the tire surface along the moving direction is presented. The moving velocities of the tire are chosen to be 30, 40, 60, and 70 km/h. The numerically simulated pressures around the tire are compared with existing experimental data. The comparison shows a new possible tool of analyzing a hydroplaning phenomenon for an automobile tire by means of a computational fluid dynamics.

The interfacial structure of duplex treated AISI 4140 consisting of iron nitride and TiN layer was characterized by optical microscope, SEM and XRD. A black layer was formed from the decomposition of iron nitride during Ti ion bombardment. The black layer was characterized as an a-Fe phase transformed from the iron nitride by XRD. In order to identify the formation mechanism of the black layer, a thermal analysis of iron nitride undertaken by DSC method. As an iron nitride was mostly consisted of ${\gamma}$'-Fe$_4$N and $\varepsilon$-$Fe_3$N phase after plasma nitriding, in this study, a ${\gamma}$'$-Fe_4$N and $\varepsilon$-$Fe_3$N powders were separately prepared by the different processing conditions of gas nitriding of iron powder in the fluidized bed. From the DSC thermal analysis, the phase transformation of ${\gamma}$'$-Fe_4$N, $\varepsilon$-$Fe_3$N was followed the path of transformation; $ \Upsilon{'}-Fe_4$Nlongrightarrow${\gamma}$-Felongrightarrowa-Fe and of $\varepsilon$-$Fe_3$Nlongrightarrow$\varepsilon$-$Fe_{2.5}$ /N+${\gamma}$'$-Fe_4$Nlongrightarrow${\gamma}$'-Fe$_4$Nlongrightarrow${\gamma}$longrightarrowFelongrightarrowalongrightarrowFe, respectively. It explains the reason why the $\varepsilon$$-Fe_3$N phase disappeared in the first time and then ${\gamma}$'-Fe$_4$N in the formation of the black layer in the duplex coating.
Plasma nitrocarburizing treatment was performed for SCM 435 steel by using a plasma ion nitriding system. The effects of the variation of nitrogen and methan contents upon the hardened layer was investigated. Both the thickness of the compound layer and the amount of $\varepsilon$ phase in the compound layer increased with increasing nitrogen content. However, the thickness of the compound layer decreased due to unstable plasma for an atmosphere containing 90% $N_2$ gas content in the gas mixture. The amount of $\varepsilon$phase in the compound layer increased with increasing $CH_4$ gas content. For $CH_4$ gas content more than 2% in the gas mixture, the thickness of the compound layer decreased due to the formation of $\theta$ phase.
Three kinds of functional regions such as continuous slurry(${\varepsilon}_f$), bubble(${\varepsilon}_b$) and wake(${\varepsilon}_w$) regions were identified, and the individual phase holdups of each functional region were determined in a three-phase slurry bubble column of 0.152 m ID. The holdups of bubble and wake were measured by adopting the electrical resistivity probe method. Effects of gas velocity and solid concentration in the slurry phase on the individual holdups of functional regions in the column were discussed. The holdup of continuous slurry phase decreased but that of bubble or wake increased, with an increase in the gas velocity in the column. The increase of solid content in the slurry phase could lead to the increase in the holdup of continuous slurry phase but decrease in the bubble or wake holdup. The portion of wake holdup was in the range of 15~40% of the bubble holdup, which decreased with increasing gas velocity or solid content in the slurry phase. The individual holdups of three functional regions were well correlated with operating variables within this experimental conditions.
