Super duplex stainless steel has along life in severe environments because of its strength and corrosion resistance. If 0.2$\sim$0.3% Nitrogen in aninterstitial solid solution is added, the austenite structure is reinforced. This improves the solid solution hardening and the anticorrosionability. In this study, the mechanical properties and structures of the super duplex stainless steel with the 0.2% N additive were investigated to determine the effect of various volume fractions on the austenite phase. The various volume fractions and distributions of the austenite structure in the applied test specimens were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. The characteristics by amounts of the $\sigma$ phase obtained from the precipitation heat treatment were alsoinvestigated. From the results, when the austenite volume fraction increases, the tensile strength decreases and elongation increases. And the $\sigma$ phase was rapidly increased by increasing the heat treatment time. When the volume fraction of the $\sigma$ phase increased, tensile strength increased.
Microstructural features and their related mechanical property changes in the 309L cladding and the heat affected zone (HAZ) of SA508 cl.3 steel were investigated through the use of TEM, tensile and small punch (SP) tests. The specimens were irradiated at 563 K up to the neutron fluences of $5.79{\times}10^{19}n/cm^2$ (>1MeV). The microstructure of the clad was mainly composed of a fcc ${\gamma}-phase$, a low percentage of bcc ${\delta}-ferrite$, and a brittle ${\sigma}-phase$. Along the weld fusion line there formed a heavy carbide precipitation with a width of $20{\sim}40{\mu}m$, showing preferential cracking during plastic deformation. The yield stress and ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of the irradiated clads increased. The origin of the hardening and the shift of the DBTT are discussed in terms of the irradiation-produced defect clusters of a fine size and brittle ${\sigma}-phase$.
An attractive combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in the temperature range -50 to $250^{\circ}C$ is offered by duplex stainless steel. However, undesirable secondary precipitation phase such as $\sigma$, $\gamma_2$ and $Cr_2N$ may taken place at the cooling stage from the welding processes. Therefore, this paper describes the influence of different welding procedures such as manual metal arc welding (MMA), tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) and vacuum brazing on corrosion resistance of the welded joint for UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel. Microstructure and chemical compositions of the welded joint were examined. The weight loss of specimens immersed in 6% $FeCl_3$ solution at $47.5^{\circ}C$ for 24-hours was determined and used to evaluate the pitting resistance of duplex stainless steel and their welds. The region of heat-affected zone of specimen obtained by the MMA is much wider than that resulted from TIG, therefore, the weight loss of welds by MMA was larger than that of weld by TIG. The weight loss of brazed specimens cooled from slow cooling rate was larger than those of specimens cooled from high cooling rate, because the precipitation of $\sigma$ phase. Beside that, the weight loss of brazed specimen is greater than those of the welded specimens. The galvanic corrosion was observed in brazed duplex stainless steel joints in the chloride solution.
Microstructural evolution of Pt-aluminide coated Ni-based superalloy has been investigated with ductilization heat treatment. The Pt coat was prepared on the superalloy and then aluminide coating was conducted using a pack cementation process. Samples were heat-treated at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs and the microstructure and element analysis were preformed. A various precipitated compounds were observed within the coating layer and the diffusion region in the Pt-aluminide coating and heat treatment, indicating that the bi-phase compounds of $PtAl_2$ and NiAl were performed during the Pt-aluminide coating, whereas $M_{23}C_6$, MC, $Ni_3Al$ and ${\sigma}$ phases were precipitated in the inter-diffusion region. The bi-phase compounds of $PtAl_2$ and NiAl were transformed into the single phase compound of $PtAl_2$ with the heat treatment, increasing the amount of carbide and ${\sigma}$ phase.
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the cooling rate after heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 2507 duplex stainless steels. Heat treatment was carried out at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, followed by controlled cooling. The cooling rates were $175.6{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $47.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $33.3{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $16.7{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $11.7{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ and $2.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, which resulted in variations of the microstructure, such as the fractional change of the ferrite phase and sigma phase formation. Fatigue, hardness, impact and tensile tests were performed on the specimens with different cooling rates. The precipitation of the ${\sigma}$ phase caused a hardness increase and a sharp decrease of toughness and tensile elongation. The fatigue limit of the sample with a cooling rate of $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ was 26 MPa higher than that of the sample with a cooling rate of $175.6{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$. Our observations of the fracture surface confirmed that the higher fatigue resistance of the specimen with a cooling rate of $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ was caused by the delay of the fatigue crack growth, in addition to higher yield strength.
The corrosion behaviors of laser-welded super duplex stainless steel tubes with post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) conditions(950, 1000, 1050, 1100 ℃ for 5 and 30 min) were evaluated by electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization and critical pitting temperature measurements. This study showed that the critical metallurgical factors affecting the degradation of corrosion resistance of a steel tube in as-welded condition were the unbalanced phase fraction(ferrite:austenite = 94:4), Cr2N precipitation, and phase transformation from the austenite phase to ɛ-martensite(via stress-induced phase transformation). The improvement in the corrosion resistance of the welded specimen depends greatly on the PWHT conditions. The specimens after PWHT conducted below 1000 ℃ showed inferior corrosion resistance, caused by precipitation of the sigma phase enriched with Cr and Mo. At 1100 ℃ for a longer duration in PWHT, the ferrite phase grows, and its fraction increases, leading to an unbalanced phase fraction in the microstructure. As a result, pitting can be initiated primarily at the interface between the ferrite/austenite phase, particularly in base metal.
This study examined the influence of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions on corrosion behaviors of laser-welded super duplex stainless steel tube. Due to the high cooling rate of laser welding, the phase fraction of ferrite and austenite in the weld metal became unbalanced significantly. In addition, the Cr2N particles were precipitated adjacent to the fusion line, which can be susceptible to the localized corrosion. On the other hand, the phase fraction in the weld metal was restored at a ratio of 5:5 when exposed to temperatures above 1060 ℃ during the post weld heat treatment. Nevertheless, the high beltline speed during the PWHT, leading to the insufficient cooling rate, caused a precipitation of σ phase at the interface between ferrite/austenite in both weld metal and base metal. This resulted in the severe corrosion damages and significant decrease in critical pitting temperature (CPT), which was even lower than that measured in as-welded condition. Moreover, the fraction of σ phase in the center region of post weld heat treated steel tube was obtained to be higher than in the surface region. These results suggest that the PWHT conditions for the steel tube should be optimized to ensure the high corrosion resistance by excluding the precipitation of σ phase even in center region.
The effect of heat treating temperature and ${\alpha}$ phase In the ${\beta}$ phase matrix were investigated for ${\beta}-CuZnAl$ shape memory alloys by tension test, fatigue test, and shape memory effect test. After heat treatment at $677^{\circ}C$, $750^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$ and $850^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. respectively, static fracture stress(${\sigma}_f$), fatigue fracture stress(${\tau}_{max}$) at $10^6$ cycle, and elongation(${\epsilon}_f$) was $24.2kg/mm^2$, $17.21kg/mm^2$ and 11.8%, respectively. As heat treating temperature decreased, fracture surfaces of the specimens were changed from the intergranular to the transgranular fracture mode. Especially, the a phase precipitated in the ${\beta}$ phase matrix had an effect on crack propagation and the fracture surface was characterized by dimple-like pattern when crack propagated in transgranular cracking mode. Precipitation of the ${\alpha}$ phase in the ${\beta}$ phase matrix lowered the transformation temperature by $10^{\circ}C$, and about 2.5 vol.% ${\alpha}$ phase did not affect the shape memory effect examined by the bending test.
The substitution of cooling method from water quenching to air cooling after solution heat treatment was aimed for the development of a convenient and economical heat treatment process of duplex stainless steels without deterioration of mechanical and corrosion resistant properties for the industry. In order to achieve this goal, the mechanical properties and corrosion properties of a ASTM A890-4A duplex stainless steel were systematically investigated as functions of casting condition and cooling method after solution heat treatment. A 3-stepped sand mold and a permanent Y-block mold were used to check the effects of solidification structure and cooling rate after solution heat treatment. The microstructural characteristics such as the ferrite/austenite phase ratio and the precipitation behavior of ${\sigma}$ phase and carbides were investigated by combined analysis of OM and SEM-EDX with an aid of TTT diagram. Hardness and tension test were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties. Impact property at $-40^{\circ}C$ and corrosion resistance were also examined to check the possibility of the industrial application of this basic study. Throughout this investigation, air-cooling method was proved to effectively substitute for water-quenching process after the solution heat treatment, when the duplex stainless steel was sand mold cast with a thickness below 15 mm or permanent mold cast with a thickness below 20 mm.
