초고분자량 폴리에틸렌의 산화, 가교, 마멸과의 상관관계 (Correlation of oxidation, Crosslinking, and Wear of UHMWPE)

  • The effect of post-irradiation shelf-aging time on the wear of orthopaedic grade UHMWPE was investigated, and wear results were correlated with the time-dependent microstructural changes of polyethylene after gamma irradiation sterilization. The levels of oxidation and crosslinking in the shelf-aged acetabular liners were examined by FTIR and hot xylene extraction, respectively, and uni-directional repeat pass sliding wear tests were conducted by using a pin-on-disc wear tester. Gamma irradiation sterilization in the air environment caused an increase of oxidation, crosslinking, and wear resistance. With aging, however, oxidation progressed and decreased the level of crosslinking. This resulted in a decrease of wear resistance of UHMWPE that was accompanied with the existence of white bands and brittle cracking.

  • In continuation of the previous work (The New Medical Journal, Vol. 12, No. 3, 111, 1969), the effects on the bactericidal activity against coli form group, on vitamin C content and ascorbate oxidase activity of the purple laver due to the $^{80}Co$ gamma-irradiation were studied. The results obtained are ; 1) After the 0.1m rad./hr. doses treatment of gamma-irradiation for 1 hours to the laver, the coli form group was being remarkably destoryed and after the application for 10 hours the coli form group was completely destroyed. 2) The content of vitamin C was gradually decreased during the gamma-irradiation to the laver. According to the sensory test, no changes in flavor nad color were indicated for 9-10 hours treatment. But, the loss of ascorbic was much than that of dehydroascorbic acid after 10-hour treatment. 3) And also, the ascorbate oxidase activity due to the irradiation waas conspicuously decreased.

Effect of Gamma Irradiation on the Structural and Physiological Properties of Silk Fibroin

  • This study was conducted to examine the changes in the molecular structure and physiological activities of silk fibroin by gamma irradiation. The results of gel permeation chromatography and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that the molecular weight of fibroin was increased depending upon the irradiation dose. Secondary structure of fibroin determined by using circular dichroism revealed that the ratio of $\alpha$-helix was increased up to 10 kGy and then decreased depending upon the irradiation dose. Whereas, the ratio of $\beta$-sheet, $\beta$-turn, and random coil were decreased and then increased with an alteration in the $\alpha$-helix secondary conformation. The 2.2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of fibroin was increased by gamma irradiation at 5 kGy, but was decreased above 10 kGy depending upon the irradiation dose. Also, the inhibition activities of tyrosinase and melanin synthesis of fibroin were increased by gamma irradiation. These results indicated that gamma irradiation could be used as an efficient method to make fibroin more suitable for the development of functional foods and cosmetics.

  • The effects of $^{60}Co\;{\gamma}-Ray$ irradiation on TSC characteristics of TFE type polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) were investigated. The $\alpha$ peak on TSC curve of PTFE was decreased, while the $\beta$ peak was reversely increased by the increasing of $\gamma$-irradiation doses up to 80 krad(0.8 kGy). Moreover, $\alpha$ and $\beta$ peaks on TSC curve of the irradiated PTFE are changed with the increasing of the forming temperature and forming electric field. In annealing the irradiated PTFE specimens at room temperature in air, it was shown a continuous recovery of TSC characteristics with time, which is assumed the traped charge carriers are liberated from the shallow traps and undergoes a recombination process during room temperature decay.

감마선 조사선양이 인삼의 지방산 함량에 미치는 영향 (Influences of Gamma Ray Radiation Doses on Fatty Acid Contents in Ginseng)

  • In order to investigate the influence of gamma-irradiation on fatty acids in ginseng, ginseng were irradiated with various radiation doses(0-50 Mrads). The results are as follows. 1. With increasing dose, standard fatty acids were decreased in the order of linolenic acid, linoleic acid and oleic acid, and their contents in the presence of oxygen were decreased more t than that in the absence of oxygen. 2. Changes of lipid content in white ginseng by gamma irradiation were varied with the samples, but the changes of crude lipid and purified lipid in a sample were showed same fashion. 3. The fatty acid contents in white ginseng were decreased by gamma irradiation in the order of linolenic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, stearic acid and palmitic acid.

  • The $\gamma$-ray irradiation and aging effects on electrical characteristics of $^{60}Co$ $\gamma$-ray irradiated ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer(EPDM) contained with 1 to 3phr phenolic and quinolinic antioxidants as antirads were investigated. The marked effects of type and amounts of the antioxidant on the volume resistivity and AC breakdown strength of the $\gamma$-ray irradiated EPDM are different. A phenolic antioxidant(IR 1010) contribute to improving the electrical insulation properties on the EPDM better than quinolinic antioxidant(Kumanox RD) during irradiation. In aging the irradiated EPDM specimens contained antioxidants at room temperature in air, it was shown a improvement of insulation properties due to radical scavenging and crosslinking of EPDM aged until 360 days.

  • Inflammation is a frequent radiation-induced reaction following therapeutic irradiation. Treatment of human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) with ${\gamma}$-irradiation (${\gamma}$IR) induces the expression of adhesion proteins such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and E-selectin. Since the upregulation of these proteins on endothelial cell Surface has been known to be associated with inflammation, interfering with the expression of adhesion molecules is an important therapeutic target. In the present study, we demonstrate that vitamin C inhibits ${\gamma}$IR induced expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin on HUVEC in a dose- and time dependent manner. Vitamin C a1so inhibited the production of Nitric oxide (NO) induced by ${\gamma}$IR. These data suggest that vitamin C has therapeutic potential for the treatment of various inflammatory disorder associated with an increase of endothelial leukocyte adhesion molecules.

卵白단백질에 대한 감마선 조사의 영향 (Effect of Gamma Irradiation on Egg White Protein)

  • The ovalbumins obtained from hen's and duck's egg white were irradiated with up to 100 kGy at room temperature. The purified proteins were evaluated for their in vitro digestibility by incubating successively with pepsin and pancreatin conjugate. Amino acid compositions and SDS-PAGE pattern in these proteins were also analyzed. The obtained results indicated that gamma irradiation within the tested dose range(up to 100kGy) produced no statistically significant changes in the in vitro digestibility an amino acid compositions. Analysis of gamma-irradiated ovalbumins by SDS-PAGE revealed radiolysis of ovalbumin into proteins or peptides of low molecular weights.

  • Comparison of ethylene oxide(E.O) fumigation and gamma irradiation on the sterilization, microbiological, physicochemcial and sensory quality of dried fishery products (shucked shellfish and mussel powder) were investigated. The viable cell count of mesophilic total bacterial was reduced by over 2 to 3 log cycles with irradiation of 3 to 5 kGy, and those samples were completely sterilized by irradiation dose of 7 to 10 kGy. In view of reduction of microorganisms, D10 value of each samples were ranged from 1. 36-1. 46 kGy. fungi, mesophilic spores, acid tolerant bacteria and coliforms were sterilized at 5 to 7 kGy irradiation but E.O. fumigation proved insulfficient to eliminate the mesophilic total bacteria and fungi. In the physicochemical and sensory quality of samples, such as the amino acid, TBA value, TMA-N, color difference and overall acceptability irradiated sample with optimum dose was similar to those of the nonirradiated sample, while E.O. fumigated sample was remarkably deteriorated in the physicochemical and sensory quality of samples.

Aloe vera투여가 Cobalt-60 감마선 조사를 받은 마우스의 생존율과 조혈간세포에 미치는 영향 (Modification of Survival and Blood-forming Stem Cells in Cobalt-60 Gamma Irradiated Mice by Aloe vera)

  • The present study was carried out to investigate whether the aloe had a radioprotective effect in mice exposed to cobalt-60 gamma radiation or not. The survival ratio of mice for 30 days, hematopoiesis of blood-forming stem cells by spleen colony assay, chromosomal aberration frequency of bone marrow cells and histopathological findings of bone marrow were investigated. The survival ratios of aloe administered groups with concentration of 250, 500, 1,000 and 1,500mg for 3 days before irradiation and control group in cobalt-60 gamma irradiated mice(700rads whole body irradiation, dose rate of 50rads/min.) were 77.4, 79.3, 80.6, 90.0 and 53.1%, respectively. The survival ratios of pre-irradiation aloe administered groups were superior to those of post-irradiation aloe groups and control group. In spleen colony assay, Aloe vera administration before irradiation enhanced the recoveries of numbers of blood-forming stem cells of bone marrow of irradiated mice. There were decreased chromosomal aberrations of bone marrow cells at the first day after irradiation in aloe administered groups compared to that of control group. Histopathological findings in the bone marrow of irradiated mice were hypocellularity due to the depletion of myelocytes, abundant of fat vacuoles and these changes were weakened in aloe administered groups compared to that of control group.
