  • The pollution of antibiotics is a major cause of spreading antibiotics resistant bacteria in the environment. Applications of ozonation, UV, and ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiations have been introduced to remove antibiotics in the effluents from wastewater treatment system. In this study, we compared the chemical (HPLC) and biological (antimicrobial susceptibility test, AMS) assays in measuring of the concentrations of residual antibiotics after ${\gamma}-ray$ and UV irradiation. Most samples were degraded by ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation (1~2 kGy). However, lincomycin and tetracycline were not degraded by UV irradiation. The concentration of residual antibiotics, that was treated with ${\gamma}-ray$ and UV irradiation, measuring by bioassay was similar to HPLC. The concentrations of ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiated cephradine measured by AMS test were 2 times higher than that of HPLC assay, indicating AMS test is more sensitive than HPLC assay. These results indicate that ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation technique is more useful than UV irradiation, and biological assay is more useful to detect the antibiotics and toxic intermediates in antibiotics degradation.

  • In this paper, we propose the fast and efficient detection method using the continuous measurement technique for the gamma-ray signal acquisition. This method is improved than the conventional method for the getting information of the radiation distribution. First, we implement the stereo radiation detection system using gamma-ray sensors and the motion controller. We apply continuous measurement technique to the gamma-ray detector and conduct gamma-ray irradiation test for the comparison of detection techniques. The results show that the continuous measurement technique has the high efficient performance than the conventional method.

  • Antibiotics have been issued recently in water environments because of potential impacts on ecosystem and public health. This study was aimed to investigating the degradation of antibiotics such as tetracycline, lincomycin, sulfamethazine and cephradine using gamma ray irradiation. And the toxicity before and after irradiation on antibiotics was tested in order to examine the aquatic eco-risk assessment by aquatic organisms. In addition, comparing tests on toxicity for gamma ray and UV irradiated antibiotics was conducted. Four different antibiotics were prepared by concentration of 30 mg/L with demi-water respectively. The absorption dose of gamma ray was ranged from 0.2 to 2 kGy. The concentration of four antibiotics was gradually decreased corresponding to the increase of the absorption dose. A method for toxicity assessment using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was evaluated to the most acceptable compared with methods by Daphnia magna and Microtox$^{(R)}$ in terms of sensibility. It showed that the reduction of toxicity on antibiotics treated by gamma ray was superior comparing to the test results obtained from UV treatment. By-products from antibiotics treated by gamma ray were easily decomposed by microorganism and their toxicity was also evaluated to low.

  • Background: The demand of recycling renewable agricultural by-products is increasing. Radiation breeding is a method used to improve saccharification efficiency. Thus, we investigated the effect of gamma ray irradiation on the pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of the stalks of Senna tora, an important medicinal plants. Methods and Results: S. tora seeds were irradiated with gamma ray at doses of 100, 200, 300, and 400 Gy. In the pretreated biomass, glucan and lignin content were higher in the M1 ($1^{st}$ generations of irradiation) S. tora stalks than in the M2 ($2^{nd}$ generations of irradiation) stalks, this can be explained by the higher degradation rate in M1. After oxalic acid pretreatment, the concentration of total phenolic compounds (TPCs) in the hydrolysate increased in the gamma ray treated seeds. The highest relative increase rate in crystallinity in the pretreated biomass was observed in M1-400 Gy and M2-100 Gy. The cellulose conversion rate was higher in M1 than in M2, except for 200 Gy. Conclusions: Gamma ray irradiation at an appropriate dose can be used to improve the efficiency of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis, thereby increasing biomass availability.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of a gamma ray irradiation to decompose hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in an aqueous solution. The decomposition reaction of RDX by gamma ray irradiation was a first-order kinetic over the applied initial concentrations (10-40mg/L). The dose constant was strongly dependent on the initial concentration of the RDX. The removal of RDX was more efficient at pH below 3 and at pH above 11 than at neutral pH (pH 5-9). The required irradiation dose to remove 99% of the RDX (40mg/L) was 4, 8 and 1 kGy, at pH 2, 7 and 13, respectively. The dose constant was increased by two folds and over twelve folds at pH 2 and 13, respectively, when compared with that at pH 7. When an irradiation dose of 20 kGy was applied, the removal efficiencies of TOC were 80, 57 and 91% at pH 2, 7 and 13, respectively. Ammonia and nitrate were detected as the main nitrogen byproducts of RDX and formic acid was detected as an organic byproduct. The results showed that a gamma ray irradiation was an attractive method for the decomposition of RDX in an aqueous solution and it was found that a strong alkaline pH over 12 should be applied to the decomposition reaction of RDX.

  • We observed that the growth and physiological change in Haliotis discus discus by low-dose irradiation with gamma ray.Irradiation with gamma ray was undertaken by using the low-level irradiation facility ($^{60}CO$) in cooperation with the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology at Jeju National University. The parent abalones were attached one by one and then fixed by using the rubber band to the front side of the fabricated case for irradiation with gamma ray. The experimental plots of irradiation with gamma ray were set as 10, 15, 20 and 25 Gy and the 25 female abalones and 10 male abalones were utilized for each experimental plot. The sperms and eggs were fertilized by setting an interval for each dose to prevent mixing with other experimental plots when fertilizing the sperms and eggs for each dose of irradiation with gamma ray. As for the fertility, it was confirmed to be 85% the control and 10 Gy groups, whereas it was found to be 80%, 65% and 50% in the 15 Gy, 20 Gy and 25 Gy groups, respectively. As a conclusion, the hatching rate and attachment rate were higher at 10 and 15 Gy than the other experimental plots, and the growth rate was higher at 20 Gy than the other experimental plots. Also the changes in lysozyme activity in accordance with the stress of water temperature were found to have a significant increase in the other experimental plots as compared with the control plot at the end of 0 h. The changes in lysozyme activity have remained constant in all the experimental plots at the end of 12 h. These results allowed us to confirm that lysozyme was undertaking the biodefense action by reacting sensitively to the stress of water temperature in the control experimental plot. As for the other experimental plots, they are believed to avoid the biodefense mechanism due to the high degree of anti-parasite mechanism and anti-viral mechanism. Thus, it is believed that it would be imperative to conduct development and research on breeds that were potent for environmental tolerance by applying the method of irradiation with gamma ray to other marine animals and plants.

  • Kim, Jong Hyup, (Div. of Biology, Atomic Energy Research Institute.) Studies on the Cellular Metabolism in Microorganisms as influenced by Gamma-irradiation(II). On respiration rate and dehydrogenase activity of yeast cells irradiated by gamma ray from cobalt-60. 1. Oxygen uptake rate of the gamma irraiated yeast cells had been measured with Warburg's manometer, and the $O_{2}$-uptake was compared with those of normal cells. The rate of endogetious respiration increases in its $O_2$-uptake at 150, 000 rentgen dose, and at higher rentoen doses it was decreased. Exogenous respiration begin to decrease in its O_2$-uptake at 5, 000r. doses of irradiation, further decrease with increasing of doses unproportionally. 2. It appears that plasma-membrane and nuclear membrane of yeast cells have changed and denatured by gamma-irradiation, as exogenous respiration of glucose had been decreased at a dose of 200, 000r's irradiation. 3. The activity of glucose, alcoholic, lactic, succinic and glutamic deliydrogenase (G.D.H., A.D.H., L.D.H., S.D.11., and GL.D.H.) in the gamma irradaited cells had been assayed by T.T.C.(Triphenyl tetrazolium chloride) method and spectrophotometry, the obtained results were compared with those of normal cells. 4. At a dose of and 10, 000 rentgens' irradiation of gamma ray, the activty of each debydrogenase (G.D.H., A.D.H., L.D.H., ) shows a sharp and highest peak in optical absorbalicy, but each abtivity of S.D.H and Gl.D.H shows its' maximum peak at a dose of 30, 000r. 5. The curve of each dehydrogenase activity was found to be rhythmical according to dose-rate of gamma irradiation. 6. Comparing with activity of debydrogenase each other, the maximum peak in optical absorbency can be arranged according to order as follows; glucose > alcoholoic > lactic > glutamic > succinic, this order is identical to the order of breakdown utility in respiration of normal yeast cells. 7. The activity of dehydrogenase experimented exhibit a resistance against gamma irradiation at lethal dose of cells, and the activity of dehydrogenase are found to be much resistant than those of respiratory system. We may assume that the membrane substrate of mitochondria or cytoplasm had been destructed by gamma-irradiation much more than that of dehydronase system.

  • In this paper, the degradation evaluation method of VLC (Visible Light Communication) wireless module after high dose rate gamma-ray irradiation using the thermal infrared camera is proposed. First, the heating characteristics of the active devices embedded in the VLC wireless module during the condition of normal operation is monitored by thermal infrared camera. By the image processing technique, the trends of the intensity of the heat emitted by the active devices are calculated and stored. The feature of the blob area including the area of the active devices in the thermal infrared image is extracted and stored. The feature used in this paper is the mean value of the gray levels in the blob area. The same VLC module has been gamma irradiated at the dose rate of about 4.0 kGy/h during 72 hours up to a total dose of 288 kGy. And then, the heating characteristics of the active devices embedded in the VLC wireless module after high dose gamma ray irradiation is observed by thermal infrared camera. The high dose gamma-ray induced degradation of the active devices embedded in the VLC module was evaluated by comparing the mean value of the blob area to the one of the same blob area of the VLC module before the gamma ray irradiation.
