  • This study would like to evaluate the influences with the strength mismatch and the variation of the welding width of the narrow gap welding for the plastic parameter, the major constant determining the plastic ${\eta}$-factor of J-Integral, using 3-D FEM. For this, we evaluate the plastic ${\eta}$-factor according to the variation of the strength mismatch of weldment with same materials and welding width through FEM. Also, we proposed the equation of plastic ${\eta}$-factor considering the variation of the strength mismatch of weldment with similar materials and welding width.

  • Transforming growth factor (TGF) family is well known to induce the chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). However, the precise signal transduction pathways and underlying factors are not well known. Thus the present study aims to evaluate the possible role of C2 domain in the chondrogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells. To this end, 145 C2 domains in the adenovirus were individually transfected to hMSC, and morphological changes were examined. Among 145 C2 domains, C2 domain of protein kinase C eta ($PKC{\eta}$) was selected as a possible chondrogenic differentiation factor for hMSC. To confirm this possibility, we treated $TGF{\beta}3$, a well known chondrogenic differentiation factor of hMSC, and examined the increased-expression of glycosaminoglycan (GAG), collagen type II (COL II) as well as $PKC{\eta}$ using PT-PCR, immunocytochemistry and Western blot analysis. To further evaluation of C2 domain of $PKC{\eta}$, we examined morphological changes, expressions of GAG and COL II after transfection of $PKC{\eta}$-C2 domain in hMSC. Overexpression of $PKC{\eta}$-C2 domain induced morphological change and increased GAG and COL II expressions. The present results demonstrate that $PKC{\eta}$ involves in the TGF-${\beta}3$-induced chondrogenic differentiation of hMSC, and C2 domain of $PKC{\eta}$ has important role in this process.

  • An analytical model for the lateral vibration of beams with a bonded lap joint and partial layered dampers has been proposed in this paper. Both shear and normal forces acting along the interface between the elastic and viscoelastic layers were considered in the vibration analysis. Analytical results were compared with those obtained by a finite element method. Effects of the size and location of layers in partial dampers on system loss factor($\eta_s$) and resonant frequency($\omega_r$) were studied. which showed that partial dampers adhered to the site exhibiting the maximum amplitude of vibration were most influential in the increase of $\eta_s$ and the decrease of $\omega_r$. Specific system loss factor( $\eta_s$ divided by total mass of system) was also evaluated in the analysis.

  • This study evaluated the influence of the strength mismatch of HAZ for a plastic ${\eta}$-factor, which is the principle parameter determining the plastic portion of J-integral to assess the fracture toughness of the weldment. The specimen of tensile and hardness test was manufactured from the piping applying narrow-gap welding, and the mechanical properties of weldment, HAZ and a base metal were obtained. To perform the finite element analysis according to the ratio of strength mismatch, the material properties was chosen with the change of strength using the determination method of Ramberg-Osgood constant. Also, the influence of the strength mismatch of HAZ was determined using finite element analysis by those properties.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of conflict and nurturing factors for the divorced parent on the behavioral adaptation of their children. The participants in this study include 216 children in divorced families nationwide. Structural Equation Modeling with LISREL8 was used for statistical method. In order to achieve the purpose, researchers firstly tried to test a construct validity of conceptual variables(parental conflict, negative attitude of parental nurturing, child's belief about parental divorce, child's aggression and child's delinquence) by employing exploratory factor analysis(EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis(CFA). Result showed that all the five conceptual variables were discriminated. It was identified as the fit index of path structure was good(CFI=.955, NNFI=.947, RMSEA=.046). The specific result were as follows: 1. the parental conflict(${\xi}1$) was directly related to the negative attitude of parental nurturing(${\eta}1$) and the child's belief about parental divorce(${\eta}2$). 2. the parental conflict(${\xi}1$) was indirectly related to child's belief about parental divorce(${\eta}2$), the child's aggression(${\eta}3$) and delinquence(${\eta}4$). 3. the negative attitude of parental nurturing(${\eta}1$) was directly related to the child's belief about parental divorce(${\eta}2$). 4. the negative attitude of parental nurturing(${\eta}1$) was indirectly related to the child's aggression(${\eta}3$) and delinquence(${\eta}4$). Lastly, and, the child's belief about parental divorce(${\eta}2$) was directly related to the child's aggression(${\eta}3$) and delinquence(${\eta}4$). Researchers also identified the mediating effect of the parental nurturing between parental conflict and child's belief about parental divorce. On the basis of these results, this article provided some suggestions for promoting of children welfare.

  • This paper is a continuation of our previous $paper,^1$ and deals with Eq.(1) (see the text), which was theoretically derived in the $paper,^1$$ [{\eta}]^f\; and\; [{\eta}]^0$ is the intrinsic viscosity at stress f and f = O, respectively. Equation (1) predicts how $[{{\eta}}]^f / [{\eta}]^0$ changes with stress f, relaxation time ${\beta}_2$ of flow unit 2 and a constant $c_2$ related with the elasticity of molecular spring of flow unit 2. In this paper, Eq.(1) is applied to a biopolymer, e.g., poly (${\gamma}$-benzyl L-glutamate), and nonbiopolymers, e.g., polyisobutylene, polystyrene, polydimethylsiloxane and cellulose triacetate. It was found that the $c_2$ factor is zero for non-biopolymers while $c_2{\neq}0$ for biopolymers as found $previously.^1$ Because of the non-Newtonian nature of the solutions, the ratio $[{{\eta}}]^f / [{\eta}]^0$ drops from its unity with increasing f. We found that the smaller the ${\beta}_2,$ the larger the $f_c$ at which the viscosity ratio drops from the unity, vice versa.

  • To estimate the structural seismic demand, some methods are based on an equivalent linear system such as the Capacity Spectrum Method, the N2 method and the Equivalent Linearization method. Another category, widely investigated, is based on displacement correction such as the Displacement Coefficient Method and the Coefficient Method. Its basic concept consists in converting the elastic linear displacement of an equivalent Single Degree of Freedom system (SDOF) into a corresponding inelastic displacement. It relies on adequate modifying or reduction coefficient such as the inelastic deformation ratio which is usually developed for systems with known ductility factors ($C_{\mu}$) and ($C_R$) for known yield-strength reduction factor. The present paper proposes a rational approach which estimates this inelastic deformation ratio for SDOF bilinear systems by rigorous nonlinear analysis. It proposes a new inelastic deformation ratio which unifies and combines both $C_{\mu}$ and $C_R$ effects. It is defined by the ratio between the inelastic and elastic maximum lateral displacement demands. Three options are investigated in order to express the inelastic response spectra in terms of: ductility demand, yield strength reduction factor, and inelastic deformation ratio which depends on the period, the post-to-preyield stiffness ratio, the yield strength and the peak ground acceleration. This new inelastic deformation ratio ($C_{\eta}$) is describes the response spectra and is related to the capacity curve (pushover curve): normalized yield strength coefficient (${\eta}$), post-to-preyield stiffness ratio (${\alpha}$), natural period (T), peak ductility factor (${\mu}$), and the yield strength reduction factor ($R_y$). For illustrative purposes, instantaneous ductility demand and yield strength reduction factor for a SDOF system subject to various recorded motions (El-Centro 1940 (N/S), Boumerdes: Algeria 2003). The method accuracy is investigated and compared to classical formulations, for various hysteretic models and values of the normalized yield strength coefficient (${\eta}$), post-to-preyield stiffness ratio (${\alpha}$), and natural period (T). Though the ductility demand and yield strength reduction factor differ greatly for some given T and ${\eta}$ ranges, they remain take close when ${\eta}>1$, whereas they are equal to 1 for periods $T{\geq}1s$.

  • An equation is derived which correlates the unperturbed dimensions $_0$ of polypeptides with the helical contents in the helix-coil transition region by using a simple model of a polypeptide chain. The model is a chain of connected balls which represent the repeating units, -CO-NH-CHR-, based on the fact that the repeating unit has a plane structure. The changing trend of the expansion factor ${\alpha}_{\eta}$ in the transition region is connected with the helical content $f_H$. The intrinsic viscosities [${\eta}$] of polypeptides are calculated from the unperturbed dimensions and the ${\alpha}_{\eta}$ factors. The above calculated results concerning $_0$ and [${\eta}$] are compared with other authors' theoretical and experimental results. From the comparison, we concluded that our theory explains better the chain dimensional behavior of polypeptides in the helix-coil transition region than others.

  • The fracture toughness for the LBB analysis of piping is generally determined by the J-integral according to ASTM E1820. However, since this evaluates a base metal, the fracture toughness for narrow gap welding can be differently than the real value. This study evaluated the plastic  factor of the narrow gap welding part of a nuclear piping with SA508 Cl.1a and SA312 TP316. Also, it performed the fracture toughness test for the narrow gap welding part and applied the new plastic $\eta$ factor equation by Huh, et al. and then compared the results with those according with the ASTM standard.

  • Electrorheological(ER) fluid's storage shear modulus(G') and loss factor(${\eta}$) have been directly measured using small amplitude forced oscillating rheometer as a function of oscillating frequency, strain amplitude and applied electric field. Two types of experiment were performed , (a) frequency sweep and (b) amplitude sweep. Two kinds of sample were employed for this experiment ; cornstarch particles in corn oil and zeolite particles in silicone oil. The storage shear modulus was a strong function of driving frequency. Generally, the modulus increased with driving frequency. On the other hand, the loss factor was not well behaved as storage modulus, but as the driving frequency increases the loss factor slightly decreases was the trend of the material's characteristics. Also the modulus was a strong function of strain amplitude. Generally, modulus decreased with increasing strain, but loss factor increases slightly with increasing strain amplitude. For G', cornstarch in corn oil ER fluid has higher values than zeolite based fluid as we increased applied electric field. On the other hand, zeolite based fluid has higher values for ${\eta}$. There is a reasonable agreement between theoretical calculation and experiment.
