Buckling and vibration characteristics of circular laminated plates under in-plane edge loads and resting on Winkler-type foundation are solved by the Ritz method. Inclusive numerical data are presented for the first three eigen-frequencies as a function of in-plane load for different classical edge conditions. Moreover, the effects of fiber orientation on the natural frequencies and critical buckling loads of laminated angle-ply plates with stacking sequence of $[({\beta}/-{\beta}/{\beta}/-{\beta})]_s$, are studied. Also, selected deformation mode shapes are illustrated. The correctness of results is established using finite element software as well as by comparison with the existing results in the literature.
Workability and aging behavior of Mg-Li-Al alloys hate been investigated with variation of Li and Al contents. It was found that ${\alpha}$(HCP) + ${\beta}$(BCC) two phase structure reveals better workability than ${\alpha}$(HCP) single phase structure. Increase of workability is attributed to the additional slip on pyramidal and prism planes besides the slip on basal plane of HCP Mg. Workability of ${\alpha}$+${\beta}$ two phase structure is improved with increased amount of Al. Among alloys studied in the present study, reduction limit up to 62 % was obtained for Mg-8.08Li-4.26Al. MgL$i_2$Al(${\theta}$) aging precipitation was observed in ${\alpha}$+ ${\beta}$ two phase structure, while it was not in a single phase structure. Result of microhardness reveals peak hardness for ${\alpha}$ +${\beta}$ two phase structure due to $\theta$ precipitate in ${\theta}$ phase. In ${\alpha}$+${\beta}$ two phase Mg-Li-Al alloys, hardness increased with increasing amount of Al. It is believed that addition of Al raised the amount Al partition in u phase and ${\theta}$ precipitation in ${\beta}$ phase.
Development of texture in SiC materials by hot-pressing and subsequent annealing was studied. Crystallographic texture type was characterized by measuring X-ray pole figures on the perpendicular plane to the hot-pressing direction. Observed all pole figures were nearly axially symmetric (fiber texture). In case of ${\beta}$-SiC materials, the pole density of basal plane (0004) increased as annealing time increased, in contrast, other planes (hkil) of ${\beta}$-SiC materials and all planes of ${\alpha}$-SiC materials nearly remained unchanged. In the case of ${\beta}$-SiC materials, therefore, a weak texture of (0001) plane at the normal direction took place in the 8h annealed samples, resulting from grian growth. The fracture toughness values of ${\alpha}$-SiC materials measured in both planes parallel and perpendicular to the hot-pressing direction were very similar. However, the fracture toughness of ${\beta}$-SiC materials measured parallel to the hot-pressing direction were higher than that measured perpendicular to the hot-pressing derection, relatively, because of the texture and the microstructure anisotropy.
A heavy fluid is injected to a rotating cylindrical container of flat or inclined bottom filled with homogeneous lighter fluid. Continuous flow-in and spreading patterns over the bottom of the container are observed and at the same time upper-layer motions induced by the movement of the heavy fluid are traced by thymol blue solution. Regardless of bottom geometry, the injected denser fluid is deflected toward "western wall" and continuous its path along the boundary with radial spreading which occurs in the bottom boundary layer to make a quite asymmetric flow. When the bottom contains a slope(${\beta}$-plane), increased pressure gradient causes the fluid move faster to produce a stronger Coriolis force. This makes the width of the flow narrower than that of f-plane. But, when the denser flow reaches the southern part of the container, a local-depth of denser fluid increases (much greater than the Ekman-layer depth) such that the spreading velocity along the wall is reduced and the interfacial slope increases to make the upper-layer adjust geographically to have oppositely directed upper-layer motion along the interfacial boundary. The role of the denser fluid in terms of vorticity generation in the upper-layer is such that it produces local topographic effect over the western half of the container and also induces vortex-tube stretching which is especially dominant in the f-plane.
Triaxial compression tests on anisotropic rock specimens are carried out to investigate the failure strength characteristic of anisotropic rocks. The test core specimens were obtained in Daegu region. Test specimens are rock cores with the 7 different angles of bedding plane. The applied confining pressures were 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 MPa, and the rate of displacement was adopted 0.1%/min to fail the specimen within 5-15 min. The results were analyzed by using the failure criteria for anisotropic rocks proposed by Hoek & Brown (1980) and Jaeger (1960). The results of this study are summerised as follows: The results of inherent anisotropy show the shoulder type of anisotropy, and the effect of anisotropy is reduced as the confining pressure increases. The compressive strength of anisotropic rock shows the highest value at the ${\beta}$ (the angle of bedding plane) = $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ and the lowest value at $30^{\circ}$. The Hoek & Brown failure criterion for anisotropic rocks gives a relatively good agreement with the measured strength in all the range of ${\beta}$ angles, but the theory of Jaeger shows a reasonable agreement only in the range of ${\beta}=15^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$.

Foliated metamorphic, stratified sedimentary and regularity jointed rocks have properties(physical, mechanical) that vary with direction (${\beta}^{\circ}$) and are said to be anisotropic. The ground in Daegu area consists of shales, clastic sedimentary rocks. These shales have plane anisotropic or transversely isotropy characteristics. Engineering characteristics of shale in Daegu area are investigated by performing a series of rock test to the bedding(${\beta}$ =0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees). The results of tests show that the uniaxial compressive strength is a maximum at ${\beta}$ = 0, $90^{\circ}$ and is a minimum when ${\beta}$ is around 60 degree.

An efficient quantization and encoding of BTC (Block Truncation Coding) parameters {($Y_{\alpha},\;Y_{\beta}),\;P_{{\beta}/{\beta}}$} are investigated, In our algorithm 4${\times}$4 blocks are classified into flat or edge block. While edge block is represented by two approximation level $Y_{\alpha},\;Y_{\beta}$ with label plane $P_{{\beta}/{\beta}}$, flat block is represented by single approximation level Y. The approximation levels Y, $Y_{\alpha}$ and $Y_{\beta}$ are encoded by predictive quatization specially designed, and the label plane $P_{{\beta}/{\beta}}$ is tried to be encoded using stored 32 reference plantes. The performance of the proposed scheme has appeared comparable to much more complex transform coding in terms of SNR, although it requires more study on the representation of small slope in background.
Density functional MO calculations for the methylsilole anion of $[C_4H_4SiMe]^-$ and methylgermole anion of $[C_4H_4SiMe]^-$ at the B3LYP (full)/6-311+$G^*$ level (GAUSSIAN 94) were carried out and characterized by frequency analysis. The ground state structure for the methylsilole anion and methylgermole anion is that the methyl group is pyramidalized with highly localized structure. The difference between the calculated $C_{\alpha}-C_{\beta}$ and $C_{\beta}-C_{\beta}$ distances are 9.4 and 11.5 pm, respectively. The E-Me vector forms an angle of $67.9^{\circ}$ and $78.2^{\circ}$ with the $C_4E$ plane, respectively. The optimized structures of the saddle point state for the methylsilole anion and methylgermole anion have been also found as a planar with highly delocalized structure. The optimized $C_{\alpha}-C_{\beta}$ and $C_{\beta}-C_{\beta}$ distances are nearly equal for both cases. The methyl group is located in the plane of $C_4E$ ring and the angle between the E-Me vector and the $C_4E$ plane for the methylsilole anion and methylgermole anion is $2.0^{\circ}$ and $2.3^{\circ}$, respectively. The energy difference between the ground state structure and the transition state structure is only 5.1 kcal $mol^{-1}$ for the methylsilole anion. However, the energy difference of the methylgermole anion is 14.9 kcal $mol^{-1}$, which is much higher than that for the corresponding methylsilole monoanion by 9.8 kcal $mol^{-1}$. Based on MO calculations, we suggest that the head-to-tail dimer compound, 4, result from [2+2] cycloaddition of silicon-carbon double bond character in the highly delocalized transition state of 1. However, the inversion barrier for the methylgermole anion is too high to dimerize.

The purpose of the study described in this paper was to experimentally investigate branch squared T joints with cold formed hollow structural sections under the in plane moment in a Vierendeel Truss. The branch in the T joints was welded to the upper flange of the chord. The main experimental parameters were the ratio of the width to the thickness of the chord ($2{\gamma}$), with ${16.7{\leq}2{\gamma}{\leq}33.3}$, and the width ratio of the branch to the chord ($\beta$), with ${0.40{\leq}{\beta}{\leq}0.71}$. Nine specimens were tested and manufactured in joints under the in plane bending moment. Based on the results of the test, the in plane moment strength of the branch squared T joints was determined according to the bending deformation of the chord flange yielding, regardless of the ratio of the width to the thickness of the chord and the ratio of the width of the branch to the width of the chord. Also, the in plane moment strength of the branch squared T joints in the hollow structural sections can be defined as 1.5 times the moment load at M1%B the strength of the joints that governed the serviceability in the control group. Finally, the experimental results with the branch squared T joints show that the in lane moment strength of the joint increased as $2{\gamma}$ decreased and $\beta$ increased.
In the present study, the vestibularly evoked activity of inferior olive (IO) neurons was examined to investigate the vertical vestibular information transmitted through the vestibulo-olivo-cerebellar climbing fiber pathway. The extracellular recording was made in 74 neurons of the IO of cats, while animals were sinusoidally rotated. Most of vestibularly activated IO neurons responded to the vertical rotation (roll) test and were found in or near the ${\beta}$ subnuclei $(IO{\beta})$. The vestibular IO neurons were activated, when the animal was rotated to the side contralateral to the recording site. In contrast to the observation that the gain of responses of yaw sensitive cells (YSC) was not changed by the rotation frequency, that of the roll-sensitive cells (RSC) decreased as the rotation frequency was increased. Regardless of RSC or HSC, IO neurons showed the tendency of phase-lag in their responses. The alternating excitatory and inhibitory phases of responses of RSC were dependent on the direction of head orientation, the characteristics of which are the null response plane (NRP) and the optimal response plane (ORP). The analysis based on the NRP of RSC showed that vestibular inputs from the ipsilateral anterior semicircular canal induced the NRP of the RSC response at about 45 degree counterclockwise to the longitudinal axis of the animal, and that those inputs were distributed to RSC in the rostral part of $IO{\beta}$. On the other hand, those from the posterior semicircular canal were related with the NRP at about 45 degree clockwise and with the caudal part of the $IO{\beta}$. These results suggest that IO neurons receive and encode the vestibular information, the priority of which seems to be the vertical component of the body movement rather than the horizontal ones.
