  • Two sesquiterpene lactones were isolated from methanol extracts of the whole plants of Youngia japonica (L.) DC. by the silica gel column chromatography and recrystallization. On the basis of spectrometric studies including $^1H-NMR,\;^{13}C-NMR,\;DEPT,\;^1H-^1H\;COSY,\;^{13}C-^1H\;COSY$, IR and MS, compounds 1 and 2 were identified as derivatives of 10(14)-guaien-12, 6-olide, isoamberboin and isolipidiol, respectively. This is the first report on the isolation of isoamberboin and isolipidiol from Youngia japonica (L.) DC.

  • Yongia sonchifolia Max. has been used as raw materials of traditional Kimchi and medicinal herb in Korea. This study was performed to investigate biologically active components in the plant. First, the writer carried out the experiment of antitumor screening test against Sarcoma-180A and the cytotoxic activity against Chinese hamster V-79 cells with methanol extract of the plant. And the aqueous solution of the extract from roots of Youngia sonchifolia Max. was partitioned into n-hexane. The concentrated extract of n-hexane layer was chromatographed on silica gel column and developed with n-hexane and ethylacetate. Two yellow elutes, on concentration, were recrystallized from ethylacetate, and the $R_f$ value of TLC of the crystal was 0.43. After analysis by $^{1}H-NMR$, $^{13}C-NMR$ and MS to confirm the structure, the author could identify the compound as bauerenyl acetate, a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpene. The crystal was colorless plate and m.p. was $280{\sim}282^{\circ}C$.

  • The ring-opening isomerization polymerization behavior of 2,5,6,7-tetrahydro-3H-imidazo[2,1-b] [1,3] oxazine(TII) has been studied under various conditions. The present study aimed at improving the low polymerizability of the above monomer (six-membered ring) up to a level comparable to that of 2,5,6-tetrahydroimidazo[2,1-b] [l,3] oxazole(TIO) (five-membered ring). The optimum result could be observed when methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate(MeOTf) and nitrobenzene were used as an initiator and a solvent in the polymerization at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Polymers were confirmed by$^1H$ NMR과$^{13}C$ NMR, and m measurements. The molecular weight obtained by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) corresponded to the molecular weight theoretically calculated from the feed ratio. The melting temperature ($T_m$) of TII was conspicuously different from that of TIO, because of the difference in the alkyl group.

  • Novel mononuclear group 13 metal complexes with the formula (R2M){NC5H4C(CH3)NNC(S)NH(C6H5)} (M=Al, R=iC4H9 (1); M=Ga, R=iC4H9 (2); M=Al, R=CH2SiMe3 (3); M=Ga, R=CH2SiMe3 (4)) result when 2-acetyl pyridine 4-phenyl-thiosemicarbazone ligand is mixed with trialkyl aluminum or trialkylgallium. These compounds 1-4 are characterized by microanalysis, NMR (1H, 13C) spectroscopy, mass spectra, and singlecrystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that 1 is mononuclear metal compound with coordination number of 5 and N, N, S-coordination mode.

  • The flowers of Chrysanthemum boreale afforded handelin, a unique guaianolide dimer and a mixture of n-hydrocarbons and n-hydrocarbon alcohols in addition to b-sitosterol and b-sitosterol glucoside. Detailed analysis of the $^{1}H$- and $^{13}C$-NMR spectra of handelin was carried out by the application of two-dimensional $^{1}H-^{1}H$-COSY and $^{1}H$- $^{13}C$ multiple-bond, multiple-quantum spectroscopic correlation techniques. Handelin was inactive in the in vitro anti-tumor activity.

  • The principle of Fourier Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and its usefulness in the fields of pharmacy and biological sciences are described. 1. The $^1H\;and\;^{13}C$ NMR spectra of triostin A and its mixture with purine derivatives were taken. From the analysis of the spectra it has established that triostin A, which exists in two symmetric conformers in chloroform solution, forms complexes only with purine derivatives by the participation of one of the conformers. 2. Also, the $^{13}C$ NMR spectra of "intact" substances in the field of pharmacognosy were taken. From the spectra it was suggested that the method is very useful for natural product research in cooperation with the chemical method.

  • The synthesis and characterization of the monomeric group 13 heterocyclic thiosemicarbazone complexes $Me_2M[SC_4H_3CHNNC(S)SCH_3]$ (M=Al (2), Ga (3)) are described. Compounds 2-3 were prepared using $MMe_3$ (M=Al, Ga) in toluene with 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde-S-methyldithiocarbazat e under anaerobic conditions. These complexes have been characterized by $^1H\;NMR,\; ^{13}C\; NMR$, elemental analyses, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group $P2_1/c$ with unit cell parameters a=10.2930(5) Å, b=18.564 (1) Å, c=7.3812(6) Å, V=1347.9(2) Å3, $D_{calc}=1.342\; gcm^{-3}$ for Z=4, 9281 reflections with $I_o<3{\sigma}\;(I_o),$ R1=0.0500 and wR2=0.0526. 3 crystalizes in the orthorhombic space group $P_{bca}$ with unit cell parameters a=13.340(3) Å, b=19.9070(5) Å, c=11.3690(2) Å, $V=2673.88(9)\;{\AA}^3$, $D_{calc}=1.511\; gcm^{-3}$ for Z=8, 17004 reflections with $I_o>3{\sigma}\;(I_o),$, R1=0.0480 and wR2=0.0524. Compound 3 is a monomeric gallium compound with a weak interaction between the pendant thiophene and the gallium center.

  • Sulfonated polyimides had been utilized and studied widely as available materials in chloro-alkali electrolysis, cationic exchange resins, and so on. However, a slow decrease in performance during experiments had been reported, which could be attributed to a loss of ionic conductivity related to either a continuous dehydration or polymer degradation. One of main reasons to account for the degradation of sulfonated polymers is the hydrolysis leading to polymer chain scission and decrement of molecular weight. Therefore, the objective of our study was to investigate possible imide cycle and additional ester bond cleavage connected with $SO_3$H presence under hydrated condition. In order to confirm and obtain as clear information as possible about breakages of bonds via $^1H\; and \;^{13}C$ NMR and IR spectroscopic analyses, our study was performed by model compound. Consequently, model compounds with both phthalic and naphthalenic imide ring and ester bonds were synthesized to evaluate the hydrolysis stability of sulfonated polyimide. The experiments were performed for prepared model compounds before and after aging in deionized water at $80^{\circ}C$ and were terminated by lyophilization technique. The aging products were finally analyzed by NMR and IR spectroscopy.

  • In this study, we synthesized a terpolymer consisting of ethylene, 1-hexene, and styrenic monomer using a metallocene catalyst and cocatalyst ststem. The styrenic monomers empolyed as the third monomer were styrene, p-methylstyrene, and 4-tert-butylstyrene. The structure and composition of the terpolymers were characterized using $^{13}C$ NMR and $^1H$ NMR. Catalytic activity, polymer yield, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the terpolymers were analyzed. We also determined the glass transition temperature(Tg), crystallinity and thermal properties of the terpolymers by DMA, WAXS and TGA.
