  • This study was performed to determine the effect of dietary Na levels on plasma amino acid levels. Plasma amino acid levels were compared in 20 adult healthy women subjects who were given high Na diet (290.48 mEq/day : NaCl 17g) or low Na diet (51.26 mEq/day : NaCl 3g) for subsequent 6 days. Plasma essential amino acids levels were significantly decreased (36%) while plasma non-essential amino acids levels were significantly increased (22%) when subjects were given low Na diet (p<0.001). Among essential amino acids, threonine was decreased (74%) significantly when subjects were given low Na diet (p<0.01). Among nonessential amino acids, serine (49%), proline (20%) and aspartic acid (14%) were increased (p<0.01), while arginine (48%) and glutamic acid (27%) were decreased (p<0.001). In conclusion, dietary Na contents seemed to be an important factor to affect plasma amino acid levels. It would be appropriate to decrease the dietary Na intakes level considering the various clinical effects of dietary Na on the body fluid. For the patients who need low Na diet, it would be suggested that the level of dietary proteins should be carefully considered along with dietary Na manipulation. • boehmite which is the by-product in alcohol process contains anions such as $Cl^-,{NO_3}^-.or\; CH_3COO^-$ Influe-nce of these anions was studied on properties of $\alpha$-alumina powders prepared by treating the transformed ${\gamma}$-alumina with the alumina sol and $\alpha$-alumina seeds (d_{50}=0.36\mu\textrm{m}$) Disperal 20/1 and 10/1 containing $Cl^-$ produced spherical powder Disperal 20/2 with ${NO_3}^-$ produced equiaxed powder and Disperal 10/3 with $CH_3$ $COO^-$ irregular shaped and sized powder. All of these $\alpha$-alumina powders were submicron. Although the green density of the alumina powder derived from Disperal 10/1 by calcination at $1200^{\circ}C$/1h. was 53% it did not sinter even at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2h. which implies that its d50 is greater than $3\mu\textrm{m}$. The others gave green densities in the range of 44~47% but they sintered as well as the AKP-30 at $1500^{\circ}C$/2 h or $1550^{\circ}C$/2 h.

  • The $PbTiO_3$is well known materials having remarkable ferroelectric piezoelectric and pyro-electric properties. Thin films of the lead titanite has been successfully fabricated by Chemical Vapor Deposition on the borosilicate glass and titanium substrate. The $PbTiO_3$ thin film deposited on the borosilicate glass using the $PbCl_2$, $TiCl_4$ dry oxygen and wet oxygen at different temperatures (50$0^{\circ}C$-$700^{\circ}C$) grows along the (001) preferred orientation. On the other hand the $PbTiO_3$ thin film deposited on the titanium substrate using the PbO grows along the (101) preferred orientation. Growth orientation of deposited $PbTiO_3$ depends on the reaction species irrespective of substrate materials. Maximum dielectic constant and loss tangent of the $PbTiO_3$ thin film deposited on the titanium substrate are about 90 and 0.02 respectively, . Deposition rates of $PbTiO_3$ deposited on the borosilicate glass and titanium substrate are 10-15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/hr. Titanium dioxide interlayer formed be-tween $PbTiO_3$ film and titanium substrate material, It improved the adhesion of the film.

  • The solvolysis rate constants of 5-dimethylamino-naphthalene-1-sulfonyl chloride ($(CH_3)_2NC_{10}H_6SO_2Cl$, 1) in 31 different solvents are well correlated with the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, using the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale and $Y_{Cl}$ solvent ionizing scale with sensitivity values of $0.96{\pm}0.09$ and $0.53{\pm}0.03$ for l and m, respectively; the correlation coefficient value was 0.955. These l and m values can be considered to support an $S_N2$ reaction pathway having a transition state (TS) structure similar to that of the benzenesulfonyl chloride reaction. This interpretation is further supported by the activation parameters, i.e., relatively small positive ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ (12.0 to $15.9kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}$) and large negative ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ (-23.1 to $-36.3cal{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$) values, and the solvent kinetic isotope effects (SKIEs, 1.34 to 1.88). Also, the selectivity values (S = 1.2 to 2.9) obtained in binary solvents are consistent with the proposed mechanism.

  • Streptomyces actuosus DMCJ-49 and Streptomyces minoensis DMCJ-144 produce the .alpha.-amylase inhibitor. Inerspecific protoplast fusion technique was used to increase the productivity of .alpha.-amylase inhibitor. Four auxotrophic mutants were obtained respectively from two strains by N-methyl-N'-nitor-N-nitrosoguanidine(3mg/ml) treatment. The optimum conditions for the protoplast formation of Streptomyces actuosus DMCJ-49 ade was as follows; 1.2% w/v of glycine, 3mg/ml of lysozyme, and 30 min of lysozyme treatment followed by 36 hr. incubation in the protop-last formation medium. In case of DMCJ-144-his those were 1.2%w/v, 3 mg/ml, 30 minutes and 60 hours, respectively. Regeneration was accomplished with hypertonic soft agar medium that contained 0.4M sucrose, 20mM CaCl$_2$, 50 mM MgCl$_2$ and low levels of phosphate. Fusion of protoplasts carrying different auxotrophic markers was achieved by treatment with polyethylene glycol. The optimum concentration of polyethylene glycol 1450 for the production of recombinants was 40%w/v. When the protoplasts was treated with 40% polyethylene glycol for 30 minutes, the frequency of recombinants was 6.5$\times$$10^{-3}$ and the $\alpha$-amylase inhibition activity of $ade^-his^-$ No. 4, which is the fusant with the most improved activity increased from 33 to 125 I.U./ml.

  • To investigate hydrostatic pressure (HP) effect on myofibrillar protein (Mf) extracted from bovine Semitendinosus muscle, Ca- and Mg-ATPase activities to evaluate denaturation of myosin and actin, and soluble protein contents were observed. In Mf treated with 100 MPa for 5 min was not observed denaturation of myosin and actin. In Mf treated with 200 MPa for 5 min, denaturation of myosin and actin were observed but inactivation rate was low (0.0136 $min^{-1}$). Inactivation rate of myosin and actin was dramatically increased above 300 MPa treatment. However denaturation of myosin and actin was not that critical with duration time. By increasing pressure size, the amount of myosin and actin in soluble protein eluted in 20 mM potassium phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing 0.6 M NaCl were decreased. SDS-PAGE of soluble protein released from Mf suspension in 0.1 M NaCl buffer (pH 7.0) showed that low molecular weight proteins (15${\sim}$36 KDa) were released by HP treatment above 200 MPa. From the results, denaturation of myosin and actin, and release of light molecule proteins of Mf were observed by HP treatment over 200 MPa.

  • The surface of wiper blade(W/B) rubber was chlorinated by chemical treatment method using the hydrochloric acid(HCI) and sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl). From the results of contact angle measurement, friction coefficient measurement, and ATR-IR spectra, the surface characteristics of chlorinated W/B rubber with time of chlorination were studied. Contact angles for W/B rubber with increasing time of chlorination and chlorine concentration were measured for the water and ethylene glycol. From the results, contact angle fell rapidly with increasing time of chlorination and chlorine concentration, reaching a constant value after about 10min. And the wettability of W/B rubber surface by means of chlorination has been improved. For an unchlorinated W/B rubber, the friction coefficient with time of chlorination decreased from 1.27 to 0.20~0.23 on full chlorination. As the results it was considered that abrasion resistance of W/B rubber surface has been also improved. The values of pH and $Cl^-$ ion concentration in a chlorine treatment solution decreased as the extent of chlorination of W/B rubber surface increased. From the results of ATR-IR spectra, it was observed that C=C double band of W/B rubber surface transformed into C-Cl band, but quantitative determination of the extent of chlorination was not feasible because of the complexity of chlorination reactions.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the pkarmacokinetic parameters of vancomycin using a 2-compartment model in 8 Korean healthy volunteers and 8 lymphoma patients. Vancomycin (1.0 g) was administered by IV infusion over 60 minutes. The $\beta-phase$ rate constant $(\beta)$, apparent volume of distribution at steady srate $(V_{ss})$, total body clearance (CL) and area under the plasma level-time curve (AUC) of vancomycin in healthy volunteers were $0.15\pm0.02\;hr^{-1},\;33.8\pm4.12\;L/kg,\;5.36\pm0.61\;L/hr\;and\;185.8\pm20.5\;{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$, respectively. The corresponding values in lymphoma patients ere $0.09\pm0.02\;hr^{-1},\;38.2\pm5.11\;L/kg,\;4.58\pm0.52\;L/hr\;and\;218.3\pm22.9\;{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$. There were significant differences (p<0.05) in ${\beta}$ and CL between healthy volunteers and lymphoma patients.

  • The optimum culture conditions for an antibiotics from Actinomyces sp. were investigated. The optimum composition of medium for antibiotics production was 1% glucose, 1% soybean meal, 0.5% NaCl, 0.1% $CaCO_2$, and the optimum initial pH was 7.0. And the antibiotics showed highest activity when the strain isolated from soil was aerobically cultivated at $28^{\circ}C$ for 72hours under the optimum conditions. A production of the antibiotics from Actinomyces sp. begins at the 36th hours and then reached the maximum at the stationary phase developed at the 72th hours under the optimum conditions.
