Damage Detection in Fiber Reinforced Composites Containing Electrically Conductive Phases

  • Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites and ceramic matrix composites (CMC) which contain electrically conductive phases have been designed and fabricated to introduce the detection capability of damage/fracture detection into these materials. The composites were made electrically conductive by adding carbon and TiN particles into FRP and CMC, respectively. The resistance of the conductive FRP containing carbon particles showed almost linear response to strain and high sensitivity over a wide range of strains. After each load-unload cycle the FRP retained a residual resistance, which increased with applied maximum stress or strain. The FRP with carbon particles embedded in cement (mortar) specimens enabled micro-crack formation and propagation in the mortar to be detected in situ. The CMC materials exhibited not only sensitive response to the applied strain but also an increase in resistance with increasing number of load-unload cycles during cyclic load testing. These results show that it is possible to use these composites to detect and/or fracture in structural materials, which are required to monitor the healthiness or safety in industrial applications and public constructions.

  • Local food industry has been spreading all over the world. Korea is also actively applying and developing local food industry. However, relatively high distribution cost in Korean agricultural market is hindering its further growth. Distribution cost has close relation with shipping distance. Raised distribution cost brings major impacts not only on quality and price of products but also on greenhouse gas(carbon dioxide) emissions. Therefore, it is necessary to find a solution for inefficient distribution system of the local food industry to reduce overall cost and greenhouse gas. In this study, we present a location selection model for local food regional center using Analytic Hierarchy Process. The location of local food regional hub center is decided based on expert opinions on five factors: accessibility, quality, population, size of area, and shipping distance. The relative importance of the five factors has been concluded as follows: quality (0.430) ${\gg}$ population (0.262) ${\gg}$ travel distance (0.201) ${\gg}$ accessibility (0.075) ${\gg}$ and area (0.033). We apply and analyze the environmental management system model for Local food industry to develop the regional hub center site selection criteria and to analyze the effects of greenhouse gas emissions in the local food industry. This study, by applying and analyzing the environmental management system of the local food industry, is believed to be a valuable asset for managing greenhouse gas emission in the local food industry. Also, the data will be used for the autonomous local food industry's direct sales stall management. Eventually, this study will contribute so greatly to the local food industry's competitiveness that even large distribution companies will give way for the local food industry.

Geological Environments and Deterioration Causes of the Sitting Buddha Carved on Rockcliff in Bukjiri, Bonghwa (봉화 북지리 마애여래좌상의 지질환경과 훼손원인)

  • The Sitting Buddha Carved on Rockcliff (National treasure No. 201) in Bukjiri consists of porphyritic biotite granite, which was fractured by three joint sets of NE-SW, EW and NS directions. They produced a physical weathering that broke many parts of the Buddha and background. The chemical index of alteration is 59 to 61 from the major elements in the granite that was weathered into producing kaolin minerals from alteration of feldspars and biotite. With weathering degree, major element compositions increase in $SiO_2$ and MnO, whereas decrease in $TiO_2,\;{Fe_2O_3}^t,\;MgO,\;CaO\;and\;K_2O$. Change proporations of trace elements to $Al_2O_3$ increase in all transition elements, Rb and Y, whereas decrease in Li, Sr and Ba. REE pattern increases only in HREE. Particularly, a decrease in CaO, $K_2O$, Sr and Ba results in what they are effluxed to dissolve from feldspars by groundwater. The Buddha image has been deteriorated into joints, color changes, brown rusts, granular decay, microorganic smears by the such weathering causes as deformation, moisture, temperature variation and microorganic living. The moisture, which leaks along the joints in the granite, not only dissolve to decompose minerals but also grows many microorganism and is frozen over during winter. NE-SW and NS joint sets affect to seep in water during rainy days to deteriorate the image because they extend outward.

A Study on the Growth of KTP$(KTiOPO_4)$ Single Crystal (KTP$(KTiOPO_4)$ 단결정의 육성에 관한 연구)

  • Growth runs of KTP single crystals were carried out by the hydrothermal method. KTP powders used for the crystal growth were prepared as a single phase by the solid state reaction of a stoichiometric mixture of $KH_2PO_4 and TiO_2$ at TEX>$800^{\circ}C$ and subsequently by the hydrothermal treatment at $250^{\circ}C$ 4m KF solution. The most effective solvents for the crystal growth of KTP were KF and K $K_2HPO_4$ solutions. Solubilities of KTP in these solutions were positive over the range $350~450^{\circ}C$.Seed crystals of good quality could be obtained by the horizontal temperature gradient method at temperatures over the range 380~430^{\circ}C$ in these solutions. The hydrothermal conditions for the high growth rates of seed crystals are as follows: growth method; vertical temperature gradient method, solvent; 4m KF or $K_2HPO_4$ solution, temperature region; $400~450^{\circ}C$, pressure region; $1000~1500kg/cm^2$, where solubility of KTP was large enough to proceed the growth. Under such conditions, seed crystals of KTP are grown at a rate of approximately 0.06-0.08mm/day in the direction of the c-axis. Morphologies of grown crystals tended to be bounded by (100), (011) and (201) faces.

Geochemical Comparison Study on the Amphibolite in the Central Gyeonggi massif and Southeastern Okcheon metamorphic belt (중부 경기육괴와 동남부 옥천변성대의 각섬암에 대한 지화학적 비교 연구)

  • The Precambrian amphibolites in the central Gyeonggi massif, Yangsuri, Gyeonggido and southeastern Okcheon metamophic belt, Mungyeonggun, Gyeongsangbukdo, Korea, were studied on the geochemical characteristics of major and trace elements, and discussed petrogenetically and geotectonically. The characteristics of major elements of the amphibolites in these study areas are igeous origin such as tholeiitic-, subalkaline and alkaline basalt. Geotectonic distinction diagrams of trace elements such as Ti-Zr-Y and Zr-Nb-Y show basaltic igneous activity of island arc and mid ocean ridge environment at central Gyunggi massif, and within plate environment at southeastern Okcheon metamorphic belt. This result shows that genetic environments of study areas are different. Especially, origin of amphibolites in central Gyeonggi massif is similar with that of western Gyeonggi massif but different with the amphibolites of Chuncheon area. Genetic environment estimated of fractional crystallization of plagioclase has no particular effect on the origin of magma because value of LREE is higher than that of HREE and Eu anomaly definitely don't be exposed.

  • The SBT($SrBi_2Ta_2O_9$) thin films with $Bi_2O_3$ buffer layer were deposited on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrate by R.F. magnetron sputtering method in order to improve the ferroelectric characteristics. In SBT thin films, the deficiency of bismuth during the process due to its volatility results in an obvious non stoichiometry of the films and the presence of secondary phases. $Bi_2O_3$ buffer layer was found to be effective to achieve the low temperature crystallization and improve the ferroelectric properties of SBT thin films. Ferroelectric properties and crystallinities of SBT thin films with various post annealing of $Bi_2O_3$ buffer layer were observed as various annealing temperature, using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Keithley 237 and HP 4192A Impedance Analyzer.

The Clinical Efficacy of Lung to Heart Ratio in 1 Hour Delayed Tc-99m Tetrofosmin Gated Myocardial SPECT after Adenosine Stress: Comparison with Coronary Angiography (아데노신 부하 1시간 지연 Tc-99m tetrofosmin 게이트 심근 SPECT에서 관찰되는 심장 대 폐 섭취비의 임상적 유용성: 관상동맥조영술과의 비교)

  • Purpose: It is well known that lung to heart ratio (LHR) is one of the high risk findings in TI- 201 myocardial perfusion SPECT. We evaluated the clinical efficacy of LHR to identify severe coronary artery disease in adenosine stress Tc-99m tetrofosmin gated myocardial perfusion SPECT (gSPECT). Materials and Methods: The study population was 157 patients who underwent both adenosine stress Tc-99m gSPECT and coronary angiography (CAG) within one month. According to the results of CAG and gSPECT LHR and the incidence of increased LHR were compared. Results: Among 53 patients with normal coronary arteries increased LHR was found in 2 patients (3.8%) and 0 in 44 patients (0%) with one vessel disease, 2 in 27 with two vessel disease (7.4%) and 8 in 33 with triple vessel disease (24.2%). Significant differences were found in LHR between subgroups of summed stress score, summed rest score and LV ejection fraction (LVEF). There were weak negative correlation between LHR and LVEF and weak positive correlation between LHR and SSS and SRS. Conclusion: Increased LHR had higher incidence in patients with triple vessel disease, severe LV dysfunction and/or extensive perfusion defect than those of normal group. Although its sensitivity might be low to identify severe coronary artery disease, LHR could be helpful in abnormal myocardial perfusion SPECT to stratify risk and prognosis.

Degassing of Molten A328 Aluminum Alloy by Ultrasonic Vibration (초음파 진동에 의한 A328 알루미늄 합금 용탕의 탈가스)

  • A328 alloy is an attractive candidate for recycle-friendly aluminum alloy in the recycling of automotive components. In this study, A328 alloy melt was degassed by ultrasonic vibration and the effect of treatment time on the density, fluidity and mechanical properties was investigated. Experimental results reveal that a constant value of density can be reached after less than 180 seconds of ultrasonic treatment time, but the density decreased when the treatment time was 300 seconds. Ti which was dissolved from the horn during ultrasonic treatment reduced the fluidity of melt. After degassing by ultrasonic vibration for 180 seconds, tensile strength increased from 201MPa to 250MPa, and elongation increased from 2.38% to 3.50%, however, further treatment deteriorated the mechanical properties.

Mechanism of intragranular ferrite formation in heat-affected zone of titanium killed steel

  • A lot of work is carried out concerning to acicular ferrite formation in the weld metal of high strength and low-alloy steel. Those results are suggesting that oxides that contain titanium elements provides nucleation site of intragranular ferrite, referred as acicular ferrite. Thus, when intragranular ferrite is expected to form in heat-affected zone, oxide containing titanium element should be formed in the steel. However, normal steel is deoxidized by using aluminum element (Al-killed steel) with little oxygen content. It means almost oxygen is deoxidized with aluminum elements. In the present work, in order to form the acicular ferrite in the heat affected zone, with the same concept in the case of weld metal, the steel deoxidized with titanium element (titanium killed-steel) is prepared and the acicular ferrite formation is observed in detail by using laser-conforcal microscopy technique. The confocal technique makes it possible that the morphological change along the phase transformation from austenite to ferrite is in-situ tracked. Thus, the inclusion that stimulated the ferrite nucleation could be directly selected from the observed images, in the HAZ of the Ti-killed steel. The chemical composition of the selected inclusion is analyzed and the nucleation potential is discussed by changing the nucleation site with boron element. The potency for the ferrite nucleation is summarized and the existence of effective and ineffective manganese sulfide for nucleation is made clear.
