Over the last few years, lead-free inorganic metal perovskites have gained impressive ground in empowering satellites in space exploration owing to their material stability and performance evolution under extreme space environments. The present work has examined the versatility of eight such perovskites as space radiation shielding materials by computing their photon, charged particles and neutron interaction parameters. Photon interaction parameters were calculated for a wide energy range using PAGEX software. The ranges of heavy charged particles (H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe ions) in these perovskites were estimated using SRIM software in the energy range 1 keV-10 GeV, and that of electrons was computed using ESTAR NIST software in the energy range 0.01 MeV-1 GeV. Further, the macroscopic fast neutron removal cross-sections were also calculated to estimate the neutron shielding efficiencies. The examined shielding parameters of the perovskites varied depending on the radiation type and energy. Among the selected perovskites, Cs2TiI6 and Ba2AgIO6 displayed superior photon attenuation properties. A 3.5 cm thick Ba2AgIO6-based shield could reduce the incident radiation intensity to half its initial value, a thickness even lesser than that of Pb-glass. Besides, CsSnBr3 and La0.8Ca0.2Ni0.5Ti0.5O3 displayed the highest and lowest range values, respectively, for all heavy charged particles. Ba2AgIO6 showed electron stopping power (on par with Kovar) better than that of other examined materials. Interestingly, La0.8Ca0.2Ni0.5Ti0.5O3 demonstrated neutron removal cross-section values greater than that of standard neutron shielding materials - aluminium and polyethylene. On the whole, the present study not only demonstrates the employment prospects of eco-friendly perovskites for shielding space radiations but also suggests future prospects for research in this direction.
The main objective of this study was to evaluate the removal properties of Cu from existing exfoliated vermiculite (EV) coated with a mixed solution of sulfuric acid and glycerol on the $580^{\circ}C$ in heating, which uses coated with glycerol of copper ions can be removed more effectively. Serial batch kinetic tests and batch sorption tests were conducted to determine the removal characteristics for Cu in aqueous solution. The result of batch kinetic test shows that removal rate, $K_{obs}$ (1/hr), of Cu are 0.579, 0.878, 3.459, and 6.578 for MEV weight 1 g (25 g/L), 2 g (50 g/L), 3 g (75 g/L), 4 g (100 g/L), respectively. In this case the initial pH of the solution was 3.26. The removal experiment according to the concentration, $K_{obs}$ (1/hr), of Cu are 1.96, 0.878, 1.25, and 1.04 for the initial concentration of 3 mg/L, 5 mg/L, 8 mg/L, 10 mg/L, and the initial pH of the solution are 3.46, 3.26, 3.10, 2.96, respectively. Influence of initial pHs on Cu removal were tested under 1g of MEV with 5 mg/L of Cu solution. $K_{obs}$ (1/hr) were increased from 0.263 (pH 3) to 0.525 (pH 5). It leads to the conclusion that the removal rates are inversely proportional to the initial Cu concentration and are increased proportional to the initial pHs. Sorption capacity of MEV was determined by batch sorption tests. The maximum sorption capacity ($Q_{max}$) obtained from Langmuir was 0.761 mg/g, Linear and Freundlich partition coefficients were 0.494 L/g and 0.729 L/g (1/n = 0.476). These results show that the MEV could be used as an excellent adsorbent for copper contained in various types of aqueous solutions.
Undoped and Co-doped $ZnIn_2Se_4$ single crystals crystallized in the tetragonal space group 142m, with lattice constants a=5.748 $\AA$ and c=11.475 $\AA$, and a=5.567 $\AA$ and c=11.401 $\AA$. The optical absorption measured near the fundamental band edge showed that the optical energy band structure of these compounds had an indirect band gap, the direct and the indirect energy gaps of these compounds decreased as temperature changed from 10 to 300 K. The temperature coefficients of the direct energy gaps were found to be $\alpha=3.71\times10^{-4}$eV/K and $\beta$=519 K for $\alpha=3.71\times10^{-4}$eV/K and $\beta$=421K for $ZnIn_2Se_4$: Co. The temperature coefficients of the indirect energy gaps were also found to be $\alpha=2.31\times10^{-4}$ eV/K and $\beta$=285 K for $ZnIn_2Se_4$, and $\alpha=3.71\times10^{-4}$eV/K and $\beta$=609 K for $ZnIn_2Se_4$:Co, respectively. Six impurity optical absorption peaks due to cobalt are observed in $ZnIn_2Se_4$:Co single crystal. These impurity optical absorption peaks can be attibuted to the electronic transitions between the split energy levels of$CO^{2+}$ ions located at Td symmetry site of $ZnIn_2Se_4$ host lattice. The 1st order spin-orbit coupling constant ($\lambda$), Racah parameter (B), and crystal field parameter (Dq) ARE GIVEN AS -$243\textrm{cm}^{-1}, 587\textrm{cm}^{-1}, \;and\;327\textrm{cm}^{-1}$, respectively.

In this research, the removal capacity of Cr(VI) by the reused powdered wastes (RPW) containing aluminium oxides was studied. As a pre-treatment process for the preparation of calcined wastes, calcination was conducted at $550^{\circ}C$ to remove organic fraction in the raw wastes. In order to study the adsorption trend of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions, the pH-edge adsorption, adsorption kinetic and adsorption isotherm were investigated using a batch reactor in the presence of four different background electrolytes($NO_3\;^-,\;CO_3\;^{2-},\;SO_4\;^{2-},\;PO_4\;^{3-}$). Cr(VI) adsorption was greatly reduced in the presence of $SO_4\;^{2-}$ and $PO_4\;^{3-}$ over the entire pH range. Meanwhile the inhibition effect by $NO_3\;^-$ and $CO_3\;^{2-}$ was relatively lower than that by $SO_4\;^{2-}$ and $PO_4\;^{3-}$. Cr(VI) adsorption was maximum around pH 4.5 in the presence of $NO_3\;^-$ and $CO_3\;^{2-}$. As the concentration of background electrolytes increased, Cr(VI) adsorption decreased. This result mightly suggests that adsorption between the surface of RPW and Cr(VI) occurs through outer-sphere complex. Cr(VI) adsorption onto the RPW was well described by second-order kinetics. From the Langmuir isotherm at initial pH 3, the maximum adsorbed amount of Cr(VI) onto the RPW was 11.1, 10, 3.3, 5 mg/g in the presence of $NO_3\;^-,\;CO_3\;^{2-},\;SO_4\;^{2-}$, and $PO_4\;^{3-}$, respectively.
It has been suggested that ion transport systems are intimately involved in mediating the effects of growth regulatory factors on the growth of a number of different types of animal cells in vivo. The functional importance of the apical membrane $Na^+/H^+$ antiporter in the renal proximal tubule is evidenced by estimates that this transporter mediates the reabsorption of approximately one third of the filtered load of sodium and the bulk of the secretion of hydrogen ions. This study was designed to investigate the pathway utilized by IGF-I in regulating sodium transport in primary cultured renal proximal tubule cells. Results were as follows : 1. $Na^+$ was observed to accumulate in the primary cells as a function of time. Raising the concentration of extracellular NaCl induced an decrease in $Na^+$ uptake compared with control cells in a dose dependent manner. The rate of $Na^+$ uptake into the primary cells was about two times higher in the absence of NaCl($40.11{\pm}1.76pmole\;Na^+/mg\;protein/min$) than in the presence of 140mM NaCl($17.82{\pm}0.94pmole\;Na^+/mg\;protein/min$) at the 30 minute uptake. 2. $Na^+$ uptake was inhibited by IAA($1{\times}10^{-4}M$) or valinomycin($5{\times}10^{-6}M$) treatment($50.51{\pm}4.04$ and $57.65{\pm}2.27$ of that of control, respectively). $Na^+$ uptake by the primary proximal tubule cells was significantly increased by ouabain($5{\times}10^{-5}M$) treatment($140.23{\pm}3.37%$ of that of control). When actinomycin D($1{\times}10^{-7}M$) or cycloheximide($4{\times}10^{-5}M$) was applied, $Na^+$ uptake was decreased to $90.21{\pm}2.39%$ or $89.64{\pm}3.69%$ of control in IGF-I($1{\times}10^{-5}M$) treated cells, respectively. 3. Extracellular cAMP decreased $Na^+$ uptake in a dose-dependent manner($10^{-8}-10^{-4}M$). IBMX($5{\times}10^{-5}M$) also inhibited $Na^+$ uptake. Treatment of cells with pertussis toxin(50pg/ml) or cholera toxin($1{\mu}g/ml$) inhibited $Na^+$ uptake. Extracellular PMA decreased $Na^+$ uptake in a dose-dependent manner(1-100ng/ml). 100 ng/ml PMA concentration significantly inhibited $Na^+$ uptake in IGF-I treated cells. However, staurosporine($1{\times}10^{-7}M$) had no effect on $Na^+$ uptake. When PMA and staurosporine were added together, the inhibition of $Na^+$ uptake was not observed. In conclusion, sodium uptake in primary cultured rabbit renal proximal tubule cells was dependent on membrane potentials and intracellular energy levels. IGF-I stimulates sodium uptake through mechanisms that involve some degree of de novo protein and/or RNA synthesis, and cAMP and/or PKC pathway mediating the action mechanisms of IGF-I.
A mass production of chestnut necessiates the development of economic long-term storage method. The main objective of this study was to confirm the technical aspect of the chestnut storage method which was developed by two year project and to review the method of commercial application. The chestnut used for the experiments were separated in brine $(5.5{\sim}6.0^{\circ}\:B{\acute{a}}ume)$ into matured and unmatured lots and fumigated with $CS_2$ at a 5 $lb/27\;m^3$ level for $25{\sim}30\;hrs.$ The chestnuts were packed in wooden boxes with sawdust (50% moisture) in the ratio of 1 : 1 by volume. The boxes were stored in the cold room $(1{\pm}1^{\circ}C,\;85{\sim}95%\;RH)$ and the cellar ($0{\sim}10^{\circ}C$, controlled only by circulating night cool air). The results obtained were as follows: 1. Fully matured chestnut could be successfully preserved $8{\sim}9\;months$ at a l0% decay level in the cold room and $4{\sim}5\;months$ months in cellar. 2. Immatured chestnuts wire inferior to the matured in storage stability. At the maximum storage period, its storage life was two months shorter. 3. The heat transfer equation of piled chestnuts with sawdust can be suggested as $T_{\infty}-T_0=(T_{\infty}-T_0){\cdot}10^{-t/320}$ and j and $f_h$ values were 1 and 320 min, respectively. 4. The chestnuts in the package of storage unit had longer shelf life than naked chestnut during the retail distribution at ambient temperature.

To develop the new type of salt-fermented seafoods, the salt-fermented oysters in olive oil (product SO) were manufactured, and food components and quality characteristics of product SO were examined. The optimum processing condition for product SO is as follows. The raw oyster with no shell was washed off with 3% saline solution. Then dewatered, and dipped in the brine-salting solution made up with saturated saline solution and oyster sauce (2 : 1 v/v) mixture added 1% sodium erythorbic acid and 0.2% polyphosphate. After salt-fermentation it ripened by brine salting at 5$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ for 15 days. Then dried at 15$^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours with cool-air, and packed in No. 3B hexahedron type can. Finally, poured with olive oil and seamed it by double-seamer. The moisture, crude protein, crude ash and volatile basic nitrogen contents of the product SO were 61.6%, 12.0%, 16.3% and 34.3 mg/100 g, respectively. In taste-active components of the product SO, total amount of free amino acids is 2,335.4 mg/100 g and it has increased by 50% overall during salt-fermentation 15 day. Taurine, glutamic acid, proline, glycine, alanine, $\beta$-alanine and lysine were detected as principal free amino acids. The contents of inorganic ions were rich in Na and K ion, while the amounts of nucleotide and its related compounds and other bases except betaine were small. From the results of this research, the product SO had a superior organoleptic qualities compared with conventional oyster product, and could be reserved in good conditions for storage 90 days at room temperature.

Recent patterns of infections with digenetic larval trematodes from fresh-water fish were studied in five locations of the river Taega during the period from October, 1998 to September, 2000, and compared with the data reported previously in the same river. The fish were collected using following techniques ; fishing, throwing a castnet, and using a bait of crushed oil cake in a transparent plastic bowl. Of 19 species of fish examined, eight species of encysted larvae, Clonorchis sinensis, Cyathocotyle orientalis, Centrocestus armatus, Clinostomum complanatum, Exorchis oviformis, Metagonimus species, Metacecaria hasegawai, and Metorchs orientalis, and two kinds of undetermined cyst A and C were found. The encysted larvae of Exorchis oviformis were found most frequently from 12 species of fresh-water fish, followed by Metacercaria hasegawai larvae from 9 species, the cyst of Clonorchis sinensis and Cyathocotyle orientalis from 7 species, Centrocestus armatus from 3 species, Clino- stomum complanatum from 2 species, and Metorchis orientalis from 1 species. The infection rates of fish with Clonorchis sinensis larvae were lower than those reported in 1993, whereas their intensity of infection was found lowered in 3 species, Pungtungia herz I, Saurogobio dabry i, and Squalidus jap onicus coreanus. The infection rates and intensity of 6 species of fish with Metagonimus sp ecies larvae were lower than the results in 1993, while the rates in several species of fish with Exorchis oviformis rather higher. The encysted larvae of Cyathocotyle orientalis, Metacercaria hasegawai, and Metorchis orientalis showed variations in infection rates of fish in 1993 and in the present study. However, It was impossible to compare the infection rates for the encysted larvae on the scales, fins and tail as they varied so considerably in both 1993 and 2000 surveys. This study indicate that the rate of infection with digenetic larval trematodes in fresh-water fish was still relatively high in the river Taega, and the metacercarial burden in the fish varies greatly by different fish in 1993.
Chemical assessment of soil pollution with heavy metals was made by analyzing the changes in pH, ionic strength, cationic concentration and chemical species in the soil solution. Saturated pastes of the unpolluted soils were made by adding solutions containing Cu or Cd and the final Cu or Cd concentrations were in the range of 0 to 400 mg/kg. After equilibrating for 24 hours at $25^{\circ}C$, the soil solution was extracted from the saturated pastes by the vacuum extraction method and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, Cu, Cd, cations and inorganic ligands. Chemical species in soil solution were calculated by the GEOCHEM-PC program employing the input variables of pH, ionic strength(${\mu}$), molar concentrations of cations and ligands. Increasing Cu or Cd additions lowered pH of the soil solution but increased concentrations of Ca, Mg and K resulting in increases of ${\mu}$ of the soil solution. Effects of Cu on lowering pH and increasing ${\mu}$ were greater than those of Cd. Concentrations of Cu or Cd in soil solution were relatively very low as compared to those of additions, but increased linearly with increasing additions representing that concentrations of Cu were higher than those of Cd. At 400 mg/kg additions, concentrations of Cu were in the range of 0.51 to 11.70 mg/L but those of Cd were 34.4 to 88.5 mg/L. Major species of Ca, Mg and K were free ions and these species were equivalent to greater than 95 molar % of the existing respective molar concentrations. These cationic species were not changed by Cu or Cd additions. Major species of Cu in lower pH soils such as SiCL and SL were free $Cu^{2+}$ (>95 molar %), but those in LS having a higher pH were free $Cu^{2-}$ and Cu-hydroxide complex. At 100 mg Cu/kg treatment, $Cu^{2+}$ and Cu-hydroxide complex were equivalent to 73 and 22.4 molar %, respectively. These respective percentages were decreased and increased correspondingly with increasing Cu treatments. Major species of Cd in soil solution were free $Cd^{2+}$ and Cd-chloride complex, representing 79 to 85 molar % for $Cd^{2+}$ and 13 to 20% for Cd-chloride complex at 10 mg Cd/kg treatment. With increasing Cd additions to 400 mg/kg, $Cd^{2+}$ species decreased to $40{\sim}47%$ but Cd-chloride complexes increased to $53{\sim}60$ molar %. These results demonstrated that soil contamination with heavy metals caused an adverse effect on the plant nutritional aspects of soil solution by lowering pH, increasing cations temporarily, and increasing free metal concentrations and species enough to be phytotoxic.
