  • The high temperature oxidation behavior and the surface defect in Fe-25Mn-1.5A1-0.5C steel was investigated by XRD (X-ray Diffractin) and electron microscopy. The intra- and inter-granular oxides were formed by the selective oxidation of manganese and aluminum, which were identified to MnAl2O4 phase. Aluminum nitride (AlN) was formed in front of these oxides. The ${\gamma}$-matrix was transformed to ${\alpha}$- and ${\varepsilon}$- phases by the selective oxidation of manganese. The surface defect, micro-scab was induced by the difference of the high temperature ductility between the matrix and the inter-granular oxide.

  • Experimental radiation nephritis was produced in 15 rabbits by X-irradiation. About $2,000{\gamma}$ (tissue doses) were given to both kidneys of a rabbit in 5 days. Other tissues and organs except both kidneys were protected with 2mm thickened lead plates. 5 weeks after the last irradiation, blood pictures, blood pressures, B.U.N., serum creatinine, Ca, Mg, Fe levels and serum erythropoietin activity of the irradiated rabbits were studied. After finishing above studies, rabbits were sacrificed and both kidneys were removed and examined histopathologically. Same laboratory and pathological studies were performed in 6 control rabbits. In this study, the author obtained following results. 1) Both kidneys of rabbitis with experimental raditation nephritis showed marked histopathological changes, i.e.: renal tubules showed diffuse cloudy swelling, impacted intraluminal hyaline casts and focal precipitations of lime salts on the tubular epithelium. Diffuse interstitial fatty necrosis and various degrees of fibrotic infiltrations on the interstitium were also seen in association with focal lymphocytic infiltrations. Hyaline degenerations were observed on the glomeruli and small vessels. 2) Experimental radiation nephritis rabbits showed marked lowering in R.B.C. counts, decreased hemoglobin levels, low hematocrit values and leucopenia in comparison with those of control rabbits. (P<0.01). (Table 1 & 2). 3) Mild proteinuria were observed in experimental radiation nephritis in rabbits. 4) The levels of B.U.N. and serum creatinine increased in experimental radiation nephritis. (P<0.01). (Table 1,3 & 4) 5) The levels of serum Ca and Mg Showed no statistical difference in comparison with those of control rabbits. (P>0.05) (Table 3 & 4). 6) No statistical correlations were observable between the levels of B.U.N. and Hb. values. (${\gamma}=-0.223$) No close correlations (${\gamma}=-0.328$) were noticed between the levels of B.U.N. and serum iron levels. 7) Erythropoietin activity (R.B.C. $^{59}Fe$ Incorporation) was measured by the modified Fried method. No change in its activity was noticed in radiation nephritis group comparing with that of the control group. (P>0.05). (Table 1,3 & 5). 8) Carotid artery blood pressures showed also no difference. (P>0.05). (Table 1 & 2).

  • The effect of H2:N2 gas ratio on the case thickness hardness and nitrides formation in the sur-face of SCM440 machine structural steel have been studied by micro-pulse plasma process. The thickness of compound layer increased with the increase of nitrogen content in the gas com-position. The maximum thickness of compound layer the maximum case depth and the maximum surface hardness were about 15.8${\mu}m$, 400${\mu}m$ and Hv765 respectively in the nitriding condition of 250Pa and 70% nitrogen content at $520^{\circ}C$ for 7hrs. Generally only nitride phases such as ${\'{\gamma}}$($Fe_4N$)$\varepsilon(Fe_2}{_3N}$ phases were detected in compound and diffusion layer by XRD analysis. The amount of $\varepsilon(Fe_2}{_3N}$ phase increased with the increase of nitrogen content. The relative amounts and kind of phases formed in the nitrided case changed with the change of nitrogen content in the gas composition.

  • Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is the technology of converting a syngas (CO+$H_2$) derived from such as coal, natural gas and biomass into a hydrocarbon using a catalyst. The catalyst used in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis consists of active metal, promoter and support. The types of these components and composition affect the reaction activity and product selectivity. In this study, we manufactured an iron catalyst using ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ mixed support (100/0 wt%, 75/25 wt%, 50/50 wt%, 25/75 wt%, 0/100 wt%) by an impregnation method to investigate how the composition of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ mixed support effects on the reaction activity and product selectivity. The physical properties of catalyst were analyzed by $N_2$ physical adsorption and X-Ray diffraction method. The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was conducted at $300^{\circ}C$, 20bar in a fixed bed reactor for 60h. According to the results of the $N_2$ physical adsorption analysis, the BET surface area decreases as the composition of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ decreases, and the pore volume and pore average diameter increase as the composition of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ decreases except for the composition of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ of 50/50 wt%. By the results of the X-Ray diffraction analysis, the particle size of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ decreases as the composition of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ decreases. As a result of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the CO conversion decreases as the composition of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ decreases, and the selectivity of C1-C4 decreases until the composition of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was 25 wt%. In contrast, the selectivity of C5+ increases until the composition of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ is 25 wt%.

  • This study has been carried out to the low temperature plasma nitriding treatment on the mechanical properties of stainless steel at temperature range between $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$. It was found that there was precipitated to free CrN matrix below $400^{\circ}C$ and there was precipitated S-phase of STS 316L, ${\varepsilon}$-phase of STS 409L and ${\alpha}N$-phase of STS 420J2. STS 316L has formed relatively abundant CrN phase and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ phase at $500^{\circ}C$, alternatively STS 409L and STS 420J2 were more deeply nitrided than STS 316L at $500^{\circ}C$.

  • The nonstoichiometry of the iron oxide system has been studied by analyzing the weight loss of a sample, measured by using a quartz microbalance, in a temperature range from $0^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ under oxygen pressures from $10^{2}mmHg$ to $10^{-4}mmHg$. The Y values of the formula, $FeO_{1+\gamma}$, that have been obtained by this means for various conditions of temperature and pressure in this range are considered to be more accurate than values obtained by methods requiring thste quenching of the sample before measurements are made. The plots of log Y vs $log PO_2$ (or $log Y =_n log PO_2$) show linearity and n calculated from the slope of the plot is about 1/10 at $1000^{\circ}C$, indicating a difference between the nonstoichiometric and oxidation mechanisms. The condition for the formation of stoichiometric FeO was determined to be $1200^{\circ}C$ under $10^{-3}mmHg$ of $O_2$ and the composition of the oxide under standard conditions was $FeO_{1.11185}$. As in general more oxygen dissolves into the oxide system at lower temperatures and higher oxygen pressures, the deviation from stoichiometric FeO is greater under those conditions. A comparison of the change in conductivity of the sample indicates that full phase transition does not take place with conductivity transition.

  • For the purpose of investigating the growth characteristics and composition of nitrides, gas nitridings of the austenitic stainless steel, STR 36 heat resisting steel and martensitic stainless steel are investigated at the temperature ranges between $500^{\circ}C$ and $675^{\circ}C$ for 5hours under the $75%NH_3+5%CO_2+20%$Air gas atmosphere. When gas nitriding the austentic stainless steel and STR 36 heat resisting alloy, the abnormal growth behavior of compound layer deviating from the conventional diffusion law with increasing temperature appears, while the compound layer of martensitic stainless steel shows the normal diffusional growth behavior. From the examination of microstructure, X-ray diffraction and hardness test, it is concluded that the abnormal growth behavior of compound layer with increasing temperature induces from the formation and dissolution of CrN and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4N$ at the nitriding temperature ranges of $600{\sim}650^{\circ}C$.

  • The effects of pre-heat treatment(Q/T) on microstructure and hardness of SCM435 structural steel nitrided by micro-pulse plasma was investigated. The quenching and tempering temperatures for obtaining matrix hardness of SCM435 steel on range of HRC30 to HRC40 desired for machine parts were about $860^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ respectively. The case depth of SCM435 nitrided at $480^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours was independent of pre-heat treatment condition and was approximately $150{\mu}m$. However, hardness and compactness of nitrified layer on Q/T treated specimen were more heigher than annealed specimen. The case depth increased linearly with the increase of nitriding temperature, however, the hardness of nitrified layer decreased with the temperature. Phase mixture of ${\gamma}^{\prime}$-phase($Fe_4N$) and ${\varepsilon}$-phase($Fe_3N$) were detected by XRD analysis in the nitrified layer formed at optimum nitriding condition, and only single ${\gamma}^{\prime}$-phase was detected in the nitrified layer formed at higher nitriding temperature such as $540^{\circ}C$. The optimum nitriding temperature was approximately $480^{\circ}C$ which is lower than tempering temperature for preventing softening behavior of SCM435 matrix during nitriding process and the surface hardness of nitrified layer obtained by optimum preheat treatment condition was about Hv930.
