Effect of Various Supports on the Catalytic Performance of V-Sb Oxides in the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of sobutane (이소부탄의 산화탈수소반응에 대한 여러 담지체에 따른 V-Sb 산화물 촉매 성능 효과)

  • $V_{0.9}Sb_{0.1}O_x$ systems, bulk and deposited on different supports (five types of $\gamma$-aluminas, $\alpha$-alumina, silica-alumina, silica gel, magnesium oxide), have been tested in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of iso-butane. Catalytic performance of VSb oxides has shown to be highly dependent on the support and the nature of the support decreasing in a series: $\gamma$-$Al_2O_3$ > $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ > Si-Al-O > $SiO_2$ $\approx$ MgO $\gg$ unsupported. Variation of the V-Sb-O-loading in the studied range of coverage (0.5-2 theoretical monolayer) only slightly influences the catalysts' activity and selectivity. The best catalytic performance of $\gamma$-alumina-supported $V_{0.9}Sb_{0.1}O_x$ systems can be explained by the optimal surface interaction between support and supported components resulting in the formation of well-spread amorphous active $VO_x$-component with vanadium in a high oxidation state.

  • Cluster models of the Υ-Al2O3(111) and the Pt(111) surfaces have been used in an atom superposition and electron delocalization molecular orbital study of interfacial bond strengths between them. The reduced extents for Al3+ are due to the ratio of oxygen to aluminum atoms. The greater the reduced extent for Al3+ is, the stronger the binding energy is to Pt atoms in a cluster. The oxygen-covered surfaces of Υ-Al2O3(111) are shown to bind more weakly to Pt atoms, while the binding to the oxygen-covered surface formed under oxidizing conditions of Pt atoms is strong. The interfacial bond of platinum-alumina may be possible by a charge-transfer mechanism from the platinum surface to the partially empty O-2p band and Al3+ dangling surface orbital.

  • The electric and magnetic properties of Mg1.9-2xMn0.05Fe4xO4+${\gamma}$+2wt% Al2O3, and its microstructure have been investigated as a function of ferrite composition (x=0.45, 0.5, 0.55). The microstructure turned out to be independent on the ferrite composition. The resistivity was decreased with increasing Fe contents, whereas the Curie temperature decreased. Saturation magnetization was varied from 1741 to 2022 G with composition, and squareness ratio (SR), coercive force (BHc) were decreased and increased with increasing Fe contents respectively, so the sample which SR and BHc were 0.97 Oe and 1.49 Oe can be attainable at x=0.45.

Preparation of Alumina by the Sol-Gel Process (II) Characteristics of Powders Obtained by Polymeric Alumina Sol (졸겔법에 의한 알루미나의 제조(II) : 중합졸로부터 제조한 분말의 특성)

  • Alumina precursor sol was obtained by the reaction of Al(OC4H9)3 and acetylacetone in the solvent followed by the partial hydrolysis. This sol was measured by viscosity and the effect of pH. The powders obtained from this sol were calcined at the various temperatures. The transition of crystals and crystal state were investigated at the various temperatures. The powders dried at 90$^{\circ}C$ showed amorphous and ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 at 900$^{\circ}C$, ${\alpha}$-Al2O3 mono-phase at 1050$^{\circ}C$ respectively. As a result of Al27-MASNMR analysis, amorphous and ${\alpha}$-Al2O3 powders showed 6-coordinated Al, ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 4-coordinated Al respectively.

Properties of Al2O3-SiCw Composites Fabricated by Three Preparation Methods (제조방법에 따른 Al2O3-SiCw 복합체의 특성)

  • $Al_2O_3$-SiC composites reinforced with SiC whisker ($SiC_w$) were fabricated using three different methods. In the first, $Al_2O_3-SiC_w$ starting materials were used. In the second, $Al_2O_3-SiC_w$-SiC particles ($SiC_p$) were used, which was intended to enhance the mechanical properties by $SiC_p$ reinforcement. In the third method, reaction-sintering was used with mullite-Al-C-$SiC_w$ starting materials. After hot-pressing at $1750^{\circ}C$ and 30 MPa for 1 h, the composites fabricated using $Al_2O_3-SiC_w$ and $Al_2O_3-SiC_w-SiC_p$ showed strong mechanical properties, by which the effects of reinforcement by $SiC_w$ and $SiC_p$ were confirmed. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of the composite fabricated by reaction-sintering were found to be inferior to those of the other $Al_2O_3$-SiC composites owing to its relatively lower density and the presence of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and ${\gamma}-Al_{2.67}O_4$. The greatest hardness and $K_{1C}$ were 20.37 GPa for the composite fabricated using $Al_2O_3-SiC_w$, and $4.9MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ using $Al_2O_3-SiC_w-SiC_p$, respectively, which were much improved over those from the monolithic $Al_2O_3$.

Effect of Particle Size on the Characterization of Plasma Sprayed $Al_2O_3$ Coating Layer (플라즈마 용사된 $Al_2O_3$층의 특성에 미치는 입자크기의 영향)

  • An objective of this study is to compare the characteristics of coating layer of plasma sprayed fine $Al_2O_3$ and those of layer by commercial $Al_2O_3$(Metco 105). The microstructure of fine $Al_2O_3$ coating layer was denser compared with commercial $Al_2O_3$ coating layer. The surface roughness$(R_a)$ of the layer by the fine $Al_2$O$_3$ was lower compared with that of commercial $Al_2O_3$. Thickness of splat for fine $Al_2O_3$ was $1.4\mu\textrm{m}$ while the commercial $Al_2O_3$ was $3.53\mu\textrm{m}$. The main phase existing in coating layer was of $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ and the fraction of $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ in fine $Al_2O_3$ coating layer was 8.39% and that of commercial $Al_2O_3$ was 13.79%. Microhardness was no great difference between the fine and commercial $Al_2O_3$ but deviation of the fine $Al_2O_3$ coating layer was relatively large. Accordingly, the strength of splat of the coating was expected that fine $Al_2O_3$was lower than commercial $Al_2O_3$ powder.

  • All types of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ such as acidic, neutral and basic forms were chemically modified with (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (3-MPTMS) and oxidized by 30 wt% $H_2O_2$ solution. As a result, sulfonic acid modified ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts were obtained. Their formation was achieved more easily by treating 1M HCl solution. Their catalytic performance was tested by dehydration reaction of D-xylose to furfural. The sulfonic acid modified ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts showed high conversion (>90%) of D-xylose, and the selectivity to furfural was increased with the amount of sulfonic acid anchored on the catalyst.

  • The methane combustion reaction was conducted over Pb-ZSM-5 catalysts. ZSM-5 synthesized at low temperature and atomospheric pressure was used as a support. The change of methane conversion with $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ molar ratio was tested. The methane conversions of the synthesized Pb-ZSM-5 catalyst was compared with those of a commercial Pd-ZSM-5(PQ Co.) and $PdO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. The methane conversion increased with the decrease in $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ molar ratio. The combustion rate of methane also increased with the decrease in $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ molar ratio. The synthesized Pb-ZSM-5 showed better methane conversion than that of the commercial one. It is found that a crucial factor in methane combustion reaction is oxygen adsorption strength on the catalysts.

Synthesis of NiO-doped Al2O3 Powder by Spray Pyrolysis (분무열분해법에 의한 NiO 첨가 Al2O3 분체의 합성)

  • Al2O3 and NiO-doped Al2O3 powders were prepared from the ethanol solution of Al (NO3)3$.$9H2O and Ni(NO3)2$.$6H2O by spray pylolysis method using two-fluid nozzle. As a result of spraying test with 0.3 mol/{{{{ iota }} concentration starting solution, mean droplet sizes varied with 8.99∼9.69$\mu\textrm{m}$ and those standard deviation were 4.57∼5.12. As-prepared powders which were synthesized at 1000$^{\circ}C$ have spherical shape, sizes of 0.1∼3.0$\mu\textrm{m}$ and specific surface area of 22.34∼24.20㎡/g. Most powders consisted of {{{{ gamma }}-Al2O3 phase and transforned into ${\alpha}$-A;2O3 phase by calcination at 1100$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. NiO-doped Al2O3 sintered bodies had better sinterability than those of pure Al2O3 and 0.3 wt% NiO-doped Al2O3 had near theoretical density and dense microstructure.

  • Aluminum alkoxide, $Al(OC_3H_7\^i)_3\;and\;Al(OC_4H_9^s)_3$, were synthesized using aluminum sheet and corresponding alcohols to prepare various phase alumina in high purity. Aluminum hydroxides were prepared by hydrolysis of synthesized Al-alkoxides and from reagent $AlCl_3$. The catalytic properties of ${\gamma}$ and ${\eta}-Al_2O_3$ prepared at various temperatures were investigated and the reaction kinetics of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ formation from $Al(OH)_3$ was considered.
