  • Kikukawa-Compliance method using a conventional clip-on gauge was employed to investigate fatigue crack growth and crack closure in 2017-T3 aluminum alloy. The crack growth rate plot against stress intensity range .DELTA.K on a log-log diagram exhibits a bilinear form with a transition at the growth rate of 10$\^$-4/ mm/cycle. The bilinear form appears still in the plot of growth rate versus effective stress intensity range .DELTA.K$\_$eff/. Fatigue crack growth rate could be well represented by .DELTA.K$\_$eff. The experimental results indicate that the effective stress intensity range ratio U depends on the maximum stress intensity factor K$\_$max/, but the stress ratio R does not affect U. The crack opening stress intensity factor K$\_$op/ tends to increase with increasing K$\_$max/ and decrease with increasing .DELTA.K.

  • The fatigue growth behavior of short cracks were studied various load ratios. Computer-aided unloading elastic compliance method was employed to measure the closure and the length of short cracks. In the dc/dN-$\Delta$K relationships. the decreasing behavior of the growth rate of short cracks is due to the decrease of crack opening ratio with increasing crack length. Irrespective of load ratio. the growth rate of short cracks can be well decribed in terms of the effective stress intensity factor range $\Delta$K$_{eff}$, which is calculated on the base of crack closure. dc/dN-$\Delta$K$_{eff}$ relationships of short cracks are found to coincide well with the corresponding long crack relationships. accordingly. the growth rate of short cracks can be predicted using that of long cracks.ort cracks can be predicted using that of long cracks.cks.

  • In this paper, the fatigue strength and the fatigue crack propagation behaviors of the round bar specimens which were spirally built up by welding and subsequently hardened by quenching were investigated. The material used was SF60 which was whdely employed in mechanical components, especially shafts. Fatigue tests were conducted at the fully reversed condition(R=-1) and axial and load control in the room temperature ahd air environment. The experimental results were expressed by both the range of stress intensity factor ($\Delta{K}$) and the effective range of stress intensity factor ($\Delta{K}_{eff}$). It was clarified that applying of quenching after the building up welding process improved the fatigue strength and the gatigue crack propagation property in the low range of $\Delta{K}$ of the built up round bar specimen.

  • We present joint constraints on the number of effective neutrino species $N_{eff}$ and the sum of neutrino masses ${\Sigma}m_{\nu}$, based on a technique which exploits the full information contained in the one-dimensional Lyman-${\alpha}$ forest flux power spectrum, complemented by additional cosmological probes. In particular, we obtain $N_{eff}=2.91{\pm}0.22$ (95% CL) and ${\Sigma}m_{\nu}$ < 0.15 eV (95% CL) when we combine BOSS Lyman-${\alpha}$ forest data with CMB (Planck+ACT+SPT+WMAP polarization) measurements, and $N_{eff}=2.88{\pm}0.20$ (95% CL) and ${Sigma}m_{\nu}$ < 0.14 eV (95% CL) when we further add baryon acoustic oscillations. Our results tend to favor the normal hierarchy scenario for the masses of the active neutrino species, provide strong evidence for the Cosmic Neutrino Background from $N_{eff}{\approx}3$($N_{eff}=0$ is rejected at more than $14{\sigma}$), and rule out the possibility of a sterile neutrino thermalized with active neutrinos (i.e., $N_{eff}=4$) - or more generally any decoupled relativistic relic with $${\Delta}N_{eff}{\sim_=}1$$ - at a significance of over $5{\sigma}$, the strongest bound to date, implying that there is no need for exotic neutrino physics in the concordance ${\Lambda}CDM$ model.

  • To establish the evaluation of the fatigue crack growth behavior in 5083-O aluminum alloy, constant load-amplitude fatigue crack growth tests were carried out under the small scale yielding conditions. Crack length and closure of this material were measured by the compliance method using a clip-on gage. The main results obtained as follows: The fatigue crack growth rate against stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K exhibits the trilinear form with two transitions at the growth rate 5.5*10$^{-6}$ and 5.5*10$^{-5}$ mm/cycle, in the so-caled Region II. The trilinear form appears still in the plot of growth rate versus effective stress intensity factor range .DELTA. $K_{eff}$. Stress ratio R affects the relationship of crack growth rates versus .DELTA.K but does not affect the reation of crack growth rate versus .DELTA. $K_{eff}$. The experimental results indicate that the effective stress intensity range ratio U depends on the maximum stress intensity factor $K_{max}$, but not on the stress ratio R.o R.R.

  • The retardation effect of fatigue crack propagation after cyclic overloading seems to be affected by strain hardening exponent. Namely, for the material with high values of n, the delay effect is found to be severe. We proposed a modified crack retardation equation which may apply the retardation of fatigue crack growth after a cyclic overloading, as (da/dN)'$_{cyc}$=($\mu$n+λ)B $\Delta$ $K^{q}$ /[(1- $R_{eff}$) $K_{cf}$$\Delta$K]. where, $R_{eff}$ is effective stress ratio [=( $K_{min}$-K, os)/( $K_{max}$$K_{res}$)] The constants $\mu$=-0.5 and λ=0.6, and the values are found to be identical for materials such as aluminum (A 1060), steel (SS 34), brass ( $B_{s}$ SIB) and stainless steel (SUS 304) used in this investigation. • This study proposes a new method of analyzing the burnup credit in boiling water reactor spent fuel assemblies against various operating parameters. The operating parameters under investigation include fuel temperature, axial burnup profile, axial moderator density profile, and control blade usage. In particular, the effects of variations in one and two operating parameters on the curve of effective multiplication factor ($k_{eff}$) versus burnup (B) are, respectively, the so-called single and compound effects. All the calculations were performed using SCALE 6.1 together with the Evaluated Nuclear Data Files, part B (ENDF/B)-VII238-neutron energy group data library. Furthermore, two geometrical models were established based on the General Electric (GE)14 $10{\times}10$ boiling water reactor fuel assembly and the Generic Burnup-Credit (GBC)-68 storage cask. The results revealed that the curves of $k_{eff}$ versus B, due to single and compound effects, can be approximated using a first degree polynomial of B. However, the reactivity deviation (or changes of $k_{eff}$, ${\Delta}k$) in some compound effects was not a summation of the all ${\Delta}k$ resulting from the two associated single effects. This phenomenon is undesirable because it may to some extent affect the precise assessment of burnup credit. In this study, a general formula was thus proposed to express the curves of $k_{eff}$ versus B for both single and compound effects.

  • In this study, it is investigated for the effects of stress ratio and grain size on fatigue crack growth behavior and crack closure, in ferrite-martensite dual phase steels. The results obtained are as follows ; .DELTA. $K_{th}$ is independent of the ferrite grain size, but decreases with increasing stress ratio. The relation between .DELTA. $K_{th}$ and stress ratio R is as follows : .DELTA. $K_{th}$ =15.1(1-0.95R). But (.DELTA. $K_{eff}$)$_{th}$ in terms of crack closure is approximately 2.5 MPa.root.m. Also, variation of the degree of crack deflection to crack tip opening displacement at the minimum load is considered as a parameter of crack closure.e.e.

  • The corrosion fatigue crack propagation characteristics of SS41 steel in 3.5% NaCl solution have been evaluated for loading frequencies of 1Hz and 0.2Hz. A sine wave loading profile was used for fatigue testing. Each test was carried out at a constant stress ratio, R(0.1). The main results are summarized as follows; 1. Fatigue crack propagation rate was higher in 3.5% NaCl solution than in air, higher in the base metal than in the weld metal, and higher at f =0.2Hz than at f =1Hz. 2. The crack closure level of the base metal was not influenced by cyclic frequencies, but that of the weld metal was much influenced. 3. When the crack closure effect was eliminated in the evaluation of crack propagation characteristics by using $\Delta K_{eff}$, the envirommental influence was distinctly observed. At the base metal, crack propagation rate was enhanced by the hydrogen embrittlement, and the weld metal was reduced by the crac closure. 4. There was clearly observed hydrogen embrittlement and severely corroded aspect at fracture surface of lower frequency than that of higher frequency, and at that of base metal than that of the weld metal.

  • This study verified the relationship between fracture mechanics parameters$({\Delta}K,\;{\Delta}K_{eff},\;K_{max})$ and X-ray parameters $(\sigma_r,\;B)$ for SG365 steel at elevated temperature up to $300^{\circ}C$. The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique according to crack length direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The residual stress on the fracture surface was found to increase low ${\Delta}K$ region, reach to a maximum value at a certain value of $K_{max}\;or\;{\Delta}K$ and then decrease. Residual stress were independent on stress ratio by arrangement of ${\Delta}K$ and half value breadth were independent by the arrangement of $K_{max}$. The equation of $\sigma_r-{\Delta}K$ was established by the experimental data. Therefore, fracture mechanics parameters could be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.
