  • [ $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y$ ] [(YSN)-123] high $T_c$ composite superconductors with $CeO_2$ addition were systematically investigated by top seeded melt growth (TSMG) process in air atmosphere. A melt textured $NdBa_2Cu_3O_y$ (Nd-123) single crystal was used as a seed for achieving the c-axis alignment large grains perpendicular to the surface of (YSN)-123 composite oxides. The size of $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})_2BaCuO_5$ [(YSN)211] nonsuperconducting inclusions of the melt textured (YSN)-123 samples with $CeO_2$ addition were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the (YSN)123 superconducting matrix except in the region very close to the Nd-123 seed crystal. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition of 91 K.

  • High T$\_$c/ (Sm/Y)$\_$1.8/Ba$\_$2.4/Cu$\_$3.4/O$\_$7-$\delta$/ [(Sm/Y)] superconductor, a combination of Y and Sm(50% each), was systematically investigated by the zone melt growth process. A sample prepared by this method showed well-textured microstructure, and (Sm/Y)$_2$BaCuO$\_$5/[(Sm/Y)211]inclusions were uniformly dispersed in large (Sm/Y)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$\_$y/ [(Sm/Y)123]matrix. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition at 91 K. The magnetization measurements of the (Sm/Y)1.8 sample exhibited the enhanced flux pinning, compared with Y$\_$1.8/Ba$\_$2.4/Cu$\_$3.4/O$\_$7-$\delta$/(Y1.8) sample without Sm. Critical current densities of (Sm/Y) 1.8 sample was 3.5${\times}$10$^4$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 1 T and 77 K.

  • Phase stability diagram and boundary of a- and c-axis orientation of $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (SmBCO) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) were reported with studies based on x-ray diffraction [1]. Four different samples are systematically analyzed: normal c-axis oriented orthorhombic $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$, a-axis oriented $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$, c-axis oriented orthorhombic $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ with $Sm_2BaCuO_5$ phase, and a mixture with c-axis oriented orthorhombic $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ and anomalously long-c tetragonal $SmBa_2Cu_3O_x$. Raman scattering spectroscopy equipped with polarization analysis elucidates the crystal orientation and the origin of the growth of the materials. It indicates that the technique can be used for quality control of conductor manufacturing processes as well as for enhancement of the materials properties.

  • Sm-doped YBCO high $T_c$ superconductor was directionally grown by zone melt growth process in air atmosphere. Cylindrical green rods of $(Sm/Y)_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_{7-x}$[(Sm/Y)1.8] oxides were fabricated by cold isostatic pressing (CIP) method using rubber mold. Based on the variation of melting temperature and growth rate, the microstructure and superconducting properties were systematically measured by using optical micrographs, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. In this study optimum melting temperature and growth rate were $1085^{\circ}C$ and 3.5 mm/hr respectively. Nonsuperconducting $(Sm/Y)_2BaCuO_5$ inclusions of (Sm/Y)1.8 superconductor were uniformly distributed within the superconducting (Sm/Y) $Ba_2Cu_3O^{7-x}$ matrix. The directionally melt-textured (Sm/Y)1.8 superconductor showed an onset $T_c$ $\geq$ 90K and sharp superconducting transition.

  • Melting and re-solidification nature of $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Sm123) grains in Ba-Cu-O (Ba:Cu=3:5) liquid containing 0.7 at.% yttrium were investigated at the temperature lower than its melt point. When Sm123 grains/liquid powder compacts were heated to a temperature between two melting points of Ba-Cu-O liquid ($1000^{\circ}C$) and a Sm123 phase ($1060^{\circ}C$) and held at this temperature for appropriate time, Sm123 grains melted partly in the liquid that was formed by melting of the liquid-forming powder. During subsequent slow cooling, (Sm,Y)$Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ solidified at the outer parts of the unmelted Sm12 grains, which is distinguished from the core regions by lower $Sm_2BaCuO_5$ (211) density.

Cylindrical green rods of $({Sm/y})_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_x$ [(Sm/Y)1.8] composite oxides by cold isostatic pressing(CIP) method using rubber mold were fabricated. The microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. • The polycrystalline superconductor $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ is fabricated, and intergranular magnetic properties are investigated using the critical state model, from which some useful parameters such as the critical current density and the intergranular volume fraction are obtained. The curve fitting for M-H hysteresis loop shows that the intergranular critical current density of $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ / decreases in the form of ($1-T/T_{c}$ )$^{1.5}$ . The intergranular volume fraction is influenced by granular morphology. From SEM image, the grains of $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ are found to be randomly shaped. This mean:; that the intergranular volume fraction of $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ / should be smaller than those of superconductors, of which grains are plate-shaped such as Tl-based superconductor.

High irreversibility field and magnetization hysteresis loop of the zone melt-textured (YNS)-123 sample exhibited the enhanced flux pinning, compared with $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_y$ (Y-123) sample without RE(rare earth). Critical current density of (YNS)-123 sample was $2.5{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$ at 2 T and 77 K.
