Acrylic acid was graft-copolymerized on polyethylene film in the presence of additives such as acid and $FeSO_4(NH_4)_2SO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ using peroxide grafting technique by ${\gamma}$-ray and electron beam, and the effect of $FeSO_4(NH_4)_2SO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ and acid on the grafting yield was evaluated. The grafting mechanism and the physical property of grafted films were also examined. The results showed that the inclusion of $FeSO_4(NH_4)_2SO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ in acidified acrylic acid grafting solution was extremely beneficial and led to a most unusual enhancement effect in the radiation grafting. In the other hand, inclusion of mineral acid in the grafting solution in the absence of $FeSO_4(NH_4)_2SO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ could not lead to he suitable grafting reaction by the severe homopolymerization of acrylic acid. The addition of $H_2SO_4$, and HCl led to much higher grafting yield than $HNO_3$and $CH_3COOH$. It was shown that grafting yield of ${\gamma}$-ray irradiated-polyethylene was higher than that of electron beam irradiated polyethylene.
The NMR spectrum and spin-lattice relaxation times, $T_1$, of the $^{1}H$ nuclei in $(NH_{4})_{2}Cd_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}$ single crystals were obtained. The two minima in $T_1$ in the paraelectric phase are attributed to the reorientational motions of the $NH_{4}^{+}$ groups. The $^{1}H\;T_1$ of the $(NH_{4})_{2}Cd_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}$ crystals can be described with Bloembergen- Purcell-Pound (BPP) theory. The experimental value of $T_1$ can be expressed in terms of an isotropic correlation time ${\tau}_H$ for molecular motions by using the BPP theory, and determine the role of protons in these processes.
Sucrose, glucose, starches hydrolyzates and raw starchy materials hydrolyzates were caramelized using various catalysis and the caramel products were analysed, in order to carry out the basic research for the replacement of caramel coloring. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The caramel which was manufactured by sucrose syrup being pH 3.5 adjusted by sulfuric acid showed strong color intensity and hue as well as good stability in the solutions of table salt, tannin and alcohol. 2. The product caramelized from sucrose syrup being pH 9.5 adjusted by sodium carbonate showed very strong color intensity and black color component, and was quite stable in alcohol solution but not in table salt and tannin solutions. 3. The caramel products made from sucrose syrup using ammonium salts of strong acid like $NH_4Cl$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ as catalyst showed strong color intensity and black color component but hazy apparence in solution of table salt, tannin and alcohol. 4. The product caramelized from glucose syrup being pH 9.5 adjusted by sodium carbonate indicated strong color intensity but weak red color component and was transparent in solution of table salt and alcohol but hazy in tannin solution. 5. In glucose caramel using $NH_4Cl$, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_3$ as catalyst, $NH_4Cl$ plot was very weak in color intensity and insufficient in red color component but stable in solution of table salt, tannin and alcohol. In the case of $(NH_4)_2CO_3$, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_3$ plots, all products were strong in color intensity but little insufficient in red color component. On the stability in solutions, $(NH_4)_2SO_3$ plot was stable in two solutions expect tannin solution, $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ plot was only stable in alcohol solution and $(NH_4)_2SO_3$ plot was only stable in table salt solution. 6. When the acid hydrolyzed starch syrups without neutralization were caramelized using $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ as catalyst, the potato starch hydrolyzate caramel showed higher in color intensity being similar to its of glucose caramel than sweet potato starch hydrolyzate caramel and corn starch hydrolyzate caramel. 7. Dried sweet potato powder, dried acorns powders, the acorns (from Q. serrata THUNB and Q. acutissima CARR.) powders extracted with water for 7 days and with 50% alcohol solution for 24 hrs were hydrolyzed by sulfuric acid in autoclave at $3.5kg/cm^2$ as pressure for 60 mins, and were caramelized using $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ as catalyst. It was supposed that all of those products were poor quality on color and stability in solutions at the viewpoint of food coloring matter.
A three-phase fluidized-bed bioreactor including Thiobacillus sp. IW was tested to remove H_2S and $NH_3$ simultaneously. The inlet $H_2S$ was oxidized to $SO_4^{2-}$ by Thiobacillus sp. IW, and the $NH_3$ reacted with the $SO_4^{2-}$ to form $(NH_4)_2SO_4$. The removal efficiency of $H_2S$ was 98.4-99.9% for an inlet concentration of 36-730 ppm and that of $NH_3$ was 60.2-99.2% for an inlet concentration of 45-412 ppm. The removal efficiency of $NH_3$ was reduced when the inlet loading rate of $NH_3$ was increased above 10 mg/l/h. When the bioreactor was operated for 25 days with a lower inlet concentration of $NH_3$ compared with the of $H_2S$, the bioreactor exhibited an excellent performance with a stable pH, dissolved oxygen content, and cell concentration.
An experiment with the tobacco plant was conducted in the pots. A sandy humic soil was used with 2 levels of pH, 3.5 and 5.8 with 2 kinds of anions, Cl as $NH_4Cl$ and $SO_4$ as $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, and with 4 levels of pF, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.5. The pH-treatment created different N-forms; $NH_4$ at low pH(3.5) and $NO_3$ at high pH (5.8). The results are summarized as follows: 1. At low pH (3.5) with high concentration of $NH_4$ given as $NH_4Cl$, the high content of $NH_4$ and Cl in tobacco resulted in plants suffering from $NH_4$ and Cl toxicity as well as Mn toxicity. As a result of these toxicity, an extremly abnormal growth of tobacco was clearly appeared. In the tobacco grown at low pH with $NH_4$ given as $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, a large amount of the $NH_4$ uptake developed Mg and Ca deficiencies. $NH_4-N$, which had been applied to the soil of high pH (5.8), was almost completely transformed into $NO_3-N$ by nitrification and, on this low acidic soil, the plants were all healthy regardless of Cl or $SO_4$ added together with $NH_4-N$. However, dry matter production was higher and maturity faster when $SO_4$ was used as anion than when Cl was used. 2. High moisture content in soil, to some extent, is necessary for a good development and growth of the tobacco plant. Phosphate uptake seemed to be limited at higher moisture stress. The dry matter yield of tops and roots of tobacco were in the order of pF 1.8 > 2.1 > 2.6 > 3.6, respectively. 3. Data of chemical analysis and dry matter yields of tops and roots showed that the tobacco plant followed the normal (C-A) concept. In the normal growth of plants, the carboxylate content of tops was quite comparable to the estimated (C-A) values. If $NH_4$ content of plants remains in quite high quantities, it must be analysed and taken into consideration for the (C-A) calculation. Al is not transported toward tops in toxic amounts due to its high immobility, it mostly stay in or on the roots, probably due to precipitation as a aolt. When Al is present in high quantities, it has to be considered into the (C-A) calculation.
A field experiment was conducted to find out the effects of liming(soil pH) and sources of N on growing characters and yield of burley tobacco. Treatments consisted of liming(nonliming, liming to soil pH5.5 and 6.5) as the main plot and N sources(compound fertilizer of containing 3.9% NH$_4$-N and 6.1% NH$_2$-N, NaNO$_3$,(NH$_2$)$_2$CO and (NH$_4$)$_2$SO$_4$as the sub-plot. The growth of vegetative growing stage of limed plots were delayed(to compare the nonlimed plot) by influence of alkali. When the source on N was NaNO$_3$ the growth of vegetative growing stage was unfavorable and the yellowing of lower leaves of maturing stage was rapid. The yield and value of cured leaf was increased by increasing the rate of Ca(OH)$_2$, but there was no significant differences among the source of N. The yield response to liming was greater when the source of N was (NH$_4$)$_2$SO$_4$ than that of any other plots.
This study was carried out to investigate the chemical characteristics ol rainwater sampled in Cheju City from July 1994 to June 1996. Concentrations of major ions (Cl-,$SO_4^{2-}$, NO_3^-$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and NH_4^+$) were determined. The pH of rainwater, calculated from the volume weighted H+ concentration, was found to be 5.61, indicating extensive neutralization of the acidity in the rain. The relative magnitude of average ionic concentrations followed the relation Cl-> $SO_4^{2-}$) $Na^+$> Ca^{2+}$> NH_4^+$> NO_3^-$> $Mg^{2+}$> $K^+$. The ions associated with sea salt, namely $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$, dominated the total concentration of ions in the rainwater and the $SO_4^{2-}$ ion accounts for 20% of total concentration. [H+][nss-SO42-+NO3] ratio and a multiple regression for $SO_4^{2-}$ and NO3- ions against $H^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $NH_4^+$ suggested that all of $SO_4^{2-}$ and $NO_3^-$ in rainwater was not necessarily associated with $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$, but might also occur in combination with $NH_4^+$ or Ca^{2+}$. The monthly mean concentrations of $SO_4^{2-}$-, Ca^{2+}$ and $NH_4^+$ in spring time was higher than those in other seasons. These results may De attributed to the fertilizer application as the local sources and the yellow sand phenomina as a regional-scale sources.
Methanol-utilizing bacterium isolated from sewage samples in Seoul showed optimal temperature and pH of $33^{\circ}C$ and 7.1 for growth, respectively. The maximum specific growth rate was $0.42hr^{-1}$. The minimum medium composition was reconstituted depending on the surplus and the deficit of each component in the basal medium at steady state. The optimal composition was given as(g/l); Methanol 40, $(NH_4)_2\;SO_42, \;KH_2PO_4\;1.5, \;K_2HPO_4\;0.2, \;H_3PO_4\;0.79, \;Na_2HPO_4{\cdot}12H_2O\;0.15, \;MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O\;1.5, \;FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O\;0.034, \;MnSO_4{\cdot}4H_2O\;0.005, \;CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O\;0.0027, \;CaCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O\;0.25, \;ZnSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O\;0.007, \;(NH_4)_6\;Mo_7O_{24}{\cdot}4H_2O\;0.00048, \;H_3BO_3\;0.00068, \;CoCl_2\; 0.00024$ Under the continuous culture with optimum medium the maximum cell productivity was 3.8g/1/hr at dilution rate $0.23hr^{-1}$. Maximum cell concentration and its protein content were 19.5g/l and 70% at dilution rate of $0.1hr^{-1}$, respectively.
Magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate whiskers ($5Mg(OH)_2{\cdot}MgSO_4{\cdot}3H_2O$, abbreviated 513 MHSH) were prepared using hydrothermal reaction with magnesium oxide (MgO) and magnesium sulfate ($MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$) as the starting materials. The effects of the molar ratio of $MgSO_4$/MgO and amount of $NH_4OH$ were studied. As a result, 513 MHSH whiskers co-existed with hexagonal plate $Mg(OH)_2$ at low concentration of $SO_4^{2-}$. The molar ratio of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$/MgO was 7:1, uniform 513 MHSH whiskers were formed without impurity such as $Mg(OH)_2$. Appropriate amount of $NH_4OH$ has affected to formation of high quality MHSH. Their morphologies and structures were determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA).

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different sources of Ca and P on urine and ileal digesta pH, and ammonia ($NH_{3}$), methane ($CH_{4}$), and odor emission. In experiment 1, eight pigs (commercial three-way cross; initial BW 67$\pm$3 kg) were arranged in a repeated 4$\times$4 Latin Square design. All pigs were equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum. Four corn-soybean meal based diets were formulated. Diet 1 was the control in which dicalcium phosphate (DCP) and limestone ($CaCO_{3}$) were used as the sources of inorganic P and Ca. In Diets 2 and 3, ${H_{3}}{PO_{4}}$, monocalcium phosphate (MCP), and $CaSO_{4}$replaced DCP and $CaCO_{3}$ as the inorganic sources of P and Ca. Diet 4 was similar to Diet 1 except that it was fortified with HCl to provide an acid load similar to that of diet 2. Urine and ileal digesta pH were determined in pigs fed each of these diets. In Exp. 1, urine pH decreased (p<0.05) in animals consuming diets containing ${H_{3}}{PO_{4}}$-$CaSO_{4}$ (5.85$\pm$0.38) and MCP-$CaSO_{4}$(5.73$\pm$0.30) compared with the DCP-$CaCO_{3}$ diet (6.89$\pm$0.24). In the pigs consuming ${H_{3}}{PO_{4}}$-$CaSO_{4}$, ileal digesta pH decreased compared with the control (5.52$\pm$0.28 vs. 6.66$\pm$0.17; p<0.05). Based on the results of Exp. 1, a total of four trials were performed in environmental chambers for determining how $NH_{3}$, $NH_{4}$, and odor were affected by the different dietary Ca and P sources (Exp. 2). In Exp. 2, pigs fed the ${H_{3}}{PO_{4}}$-$CaSO_{4}$ diet had decreased (30%) $NH_{3}$ emissions compared with the control (p<0.05). Also, a combination of MCP-$CaCO_{3}$-$CaCl_{12}$ decreased $NH_{3}$ emission by 15% (p<0.05). Emission of $CH_{4}$ was decreased only with the ${H_{3}}{PO_{4}}$-$CaSO_{4}$ diet with 14% (p<0.05). Odorant emission of phenolics and volatile fatty acids increased roughly three-fold with the DCP-$CaSO_{4}$ diet but was not affected by other test diets. In conclusion, acidogenic Ca and P sources in swine diets can decrease the urinary pH and reduce $NH_{3}$ and $CH_{4}$ emission from swine facilities.
