The inside wall of a coal gasifier is lined with refractory, and the corrosion of the refractory is an important factor affecting the refractory lifetime and the replacement period. This paper examines the changes in microstructure of a chromia refractory due to chemical reactions with slag having varying amounts of $Fe_2O_3$. Slag samples were prepared by adding $Fe_2O_3$ to KIDECO slag, and static corrosion experiments were carried out at $1550^{\circ}C$. The layer of $(Fe,Cr)_3O_4$ formation and the depth of Fe depletion in the infiltrating slag were determined. In addition, FactSage equilibrium calculations were carried out in order to determine the conditions of formation, and to compare with the experimental observations. In the sample exposed to KIDECO slag, which has about 10 wt% $Fe_2O_3$, the formation of $(Fe,Cr)_3O_4$ was not observed. As the $Fe_2O_3$ concentration in slag increased, $(Fe,Cr)_3O_4$ formation and Fe depletion depth increased. Increasing $Fe_2O_3$ concentration also made the slag/refractory interface indistinguishable. Equilibrium calculations predicted that higher $Fe_2O_3$ concentrations favor chromite formation at gasification temperatures. The chromite formation was most favorable when the amount of $Cr_2O_3$ was limited, as in the case of dissolved $Cr_2O_3$ in slag. When the concentration of $Fe_2O_3$ in slag was less than 20%, the formation of chromite was least favorable in the system with equal amounts of slag and refractory.
Intermetallics of Fe-28%Al($Fe_3Al$) and Fe-28%Al-4%Cr($Fe_3Al-4Cr$) were oxidized at 1073, 1273 and 1473k in air for up to 17 days. The oxidation resistance of$Fe_3Al-4Cr$ was basically similar to or better than that of $Fe_3Al$. The oxide scales formed on $Fe_3Al$ consisted essentially of pure ${\alpha}-AL_2O_3$, while those formed on $Fe_3Al-4Cr$ consisted of ${\alpha}-AL_2O_3$ having dissolved iron and chromium ions. The preferential outward diffusion of substrate elements to form the outer oxide layer led to the formation of Kirkendall voids at the oxide-matrix interface. The scales formed on $Fe_3Al(-4Cr)$ were thin and dense up to 1273K, but they spalled easily at 1473K, accompanied by more weight gains.
We report the exchange bias in antiferromagnet/ferrimagnet $Cr_2O_3/Fe_3O_4$ core/shell nanoparticles. The magnetic field hysteresis curve for $Cr_2O_3/Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles after field-cooling (FC) clearly showed both horizontal ($H_{EB}{\sim}$610 Oe) and vertical (${\Delta}M{\sim}$5.6 emu/g) shifts at 5 K. These shifts disappeared as the temperature increased toward the Neel temperature of $Cr_2O_3\;(T_N{\sim}$307 K). The $H_{EB}\;and\;{\Delta}M$ values were sharply decreased between the $1^{st}\;and\;the\;2^{nd}$ magnetic field cycles, and then slowly decreased with further cycling. These results are discussed in terms of the formation of single domains with pinned, uncompensated, antiferromagnetic spin and their evolution into multi-domains with cycling.

Nano-multilayered $Cr_{25.2}Al_{19.5}Si_{4.7}N_{50.5}$ films were deposited on the steel substrate by cathodic arc plasma deposition. They were corroded at $900^{\circ}C$ in $Ar/1%SO_2$ gas in order to study their corrosion behavior in sulfidizing/oxidizing environments. Despite the presence of sulfur in the gaseous environment, the corrosion was governed by oxidation, leading to formation of protective oxides such as $Cr_2O_3$ and ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, where Si was dissolved. Iron diffused outward from the substrate to the film surface, and oxidized to $Fe_2O_3$ and $Fe_3O_4$. The films were corrosion-resistant up to 150 h owing to the formation of thin ($Cr_2O_3$ and/or ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$)-rich oxide layers. However, they failed when corroded at $900^{\circ}C$ for 300 h, resulting in the formation of layered oxide scales due to not only outward diffusion of Cr, Al, Si, Fe and N, but also inward movement of sulfur and oxygen.
Brazing of Fe-Cr-Al alloy was carried out at $1200^{\circ}C$ in vacuum furnace using nickel-based filler metals : BNi-5 powder(Ni-Cr-Si-Fe base alloy} and MBF-50 foil (Ni-Cr-Si-B). The effect of boron content on the stability of oxide scale on the brazed joint was investigated by means of cyclic oxidation test performed at $1050^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$. Apparently, the joints brazed with MBF-50 containing boron showed relatively stable oxidation rates compared to boron-free BNi-5 at both temperatures. However, it was considered that the slower weight loss of MBF-50 brazed specimen wasn’t resulted from the low oxidation rate but from the spallation of oxide layer. The oxide layer consisted of thick spinel oxide on the surface and $Al_2 O_3$ internal oxide layer along the interface between mother alloy and braze, the mother alloy was also eroded seriously by the formation of spinel oxides such as $FeCr_2 O_4$ and $NiCr_2 O_4$ on the surface, likely to be induced by the change of oxide forming mechanism due to diffusion of boron from the braze. On the contrary, the joint brazed with BNi-5 showed the good oxidation resistance during the cyclic oxidation test. It seems that the oxidation can be retarded by the formation of stable $Al_2 O_3$ layer at the surface.
Although the ferrous material was separated by the magnetic separation before the incineration process, the municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash generated during incinerator in metropolitan area consists of many iron products which account for about $3{\sim}11%$ as well as ceramics and glasses. The formation of $NiFe_2O_4$ and $FeCr_2O_4$ with a $Fe_3O_4-Fe_2O_3$ (similar to pure Fe) on the surface of iron product was found during air-annealing in the incinerator at $1000^{\circ}C$, because Ni and Cr has a chemical attraction about iron is using to coat with Ni and Cr metals for poish or to prevent corrosion. Therefore, Fe-Ni Cr oxide can be formed on durface of the iron product and it can be separated from bottom ash through the magnetic separation. So, in this study, the separation ratio of heavy metals as magnetic separation and mineralogical formation of Fe-ion(heavy metal) in ferrous metals corroded were investigated. As the result, the separation ratio of Ni and Cr based on particle sizes accounted for about $45{\sim}50%$, and Cu and Pb accounted for below 20%. Also, the leaching concentration of Ni and Cr in bottom ash separated by magnetic separation was lower than that in fresh bottom ash.

Cyclic hot corrosion studies have been carried out on(82~94) wt. % Fe-(5, 10, 15) wt. % Cr alloys con-taining either (1, 3)wt. % of Si or Pt as minor alloying elements in molten salts of($Na_2SO_4$+NaCl) between 820 and $920^{\circ}C$. Si or Pt decreased corrosion rate with the most pronounced effect being observed for alloys having 15wt. %Cr. Especially, as Si or Pt contents are increased from 1 to 3 wt. %, improved corrosion resistance was obtained. The beneficial effect of Si addition is due to the presence of the Si-rich second phase along the grain boundaries as well as the formation of the protective $SiO_2$layer between substrates and oxide scale. The Pt addition also increased the corrosion resistance by enhancing the formation ($Cr_2O_3$+layers and by increasing the adherence of the oxide scale.
The oxidation behaviors of Y-Cr bilayer deposited on ferritic steel by magnetron-sputtering for application of the Fe-Cr alloys as interconnectors of planar-type solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) were studied. After oxidation at $800^{\circ}C$ for 40 hours, the major phase of $Y_2$$O_3$and the minor phase of $YCrO_3$, $Mn_{1.5}$$Cr_{1.5}$$O_4$and Cr$_2$SiO$_4$were formed in the Y/Cr bilayered samples, while the major phase of Cr$_2$O$_3$and the minor phase of $Y_2$$O_3$were formed as the major phase in the Cr/Y bilayered samples. The Log(ASR/T) that expresses electric resistance of the Y/Cr coated specimen with nonconducting $_Y2$$O_3$oxide showed high value of -2.80 Ω$\textrm{cm}^2$$K^{-1}$ / and that of the Cr/Y coated specimen with conducting $Cr_2$$O_3$oxide appeared to be -4.11 Ω$\textrm{cm}^2$$^{K}$ . The electric resistance of the Y/Cr coated specimen was largely increased due to the formation of high resistance oxide scales. However, the Cr/Y coated specimen did not show any increase in the electric resistance and had the long-term stability of oxidation because there was no formation of the secondary phases with low conductivity.
Fe-(10, 20, 30, 40) wt%Cr alloys were corroded in $Na_2SO_4$ salts ($m.p.=884^{\circ}C$) at $800{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 3-300 hrs. Their corrosion resistance increased with an increase in Cr content owing to the formation of slowly growing $Cr_2O_3$. During corrosion, $Na_2SO_4$ dissociated and reacted with the alloys to form $Cr_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$. Since $Fe_2O_3$ dissolved fast into the salts, most of the scales consisted primarily of $Cr_2O_3$. Inside the scale, a small amount of sulfides also existed. The oxidation, dissolution and detachment of the formed scales occurred significantly.

The boiler tubes of X20CrMoV12.1 used in fossil-fired power plants were obtained and analyzed for the effect of water treatment on the steam corrosion-induced oxide scale in an effort to better understand the oxide formation mechanism, as well as pertinent method of maintenance and lifetime extension. The specimens were analyzed using various microscopy and microanalysis techniques, with focuses on the effect of water treatment on the characters of scale. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the scales of specimens were composed of hematite ($Fe_2O_3$), magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$), and chromite ($FeCr_2O_4$). Electron backscatter diffraction analysis showed that the oxides were present in the following order on the matrix: outer $Fe_2O_3$, intermediate $Fe_3O_4$, and inner $FeCr_2O_4$. After all volatile treatment or oxygenated treatment, a dense protective $Fe_2O_3$ layer was formed on the $Fe_3O_4$ layer of the specimen, retarding further progression of corrosion.
