  • A 7-year-old castrated male Persian cat presented with a cutaneous mass and an increase in serum amyloid A concentration. Fine needle aspirates of the mass indicated lymphoma, which was also the top differential diagnosis on histopathologic examinations. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells tested negative for anti-CD3, PAX5, CD20, and c-Kit, but positive for MUM1, CD79α, and CD138, suggesting extramedullary plasmacytoma. There were tumor-infiltrating non-neoplastic CD3+ T and PAX5+ B cells. Practitioners should be aware of feline plasmacytoma characterized by lymphoma-like cytologic and histologic features. The present study is valuable in providing the first clinical evidence that proves the immunogenicity of feline plasmacytoma.

  • In this paper, we performed simulations of aircraft automatic landing using GPS, DGPS and CDGPS. Our purpose is examining the possibility of aircraft landing using GPS through the simulation results. The aircraft landing is composed of two stages, glide-slope and flare. Therefore, LQG controllers are designed separately. In simulations, measurement noise depends not only on UERE and UERRE(which have different values in GPS, DGPS, and CDGPS) but also on DOPs. DOPs are determined only by the geometry of GPS satellite constellation. For DOP calculation, we also made program for GPS satellites orbit simulatiion. Accordin to the simulation results, ICAO CAT III can be achieved of CDGPS is used.

  • Helminth and their ova or protozoan oocysts from fecal samples of cats in Chonju and Daejon were examined from December 1995 to January 1996. Out of the 43 samples, 41(95.35%) were positive and 66(153.49%) were cumulative positive for parasite infection. The identified parasites were summerized as follows; Worms of Toxocara cati(62.79%), Taenia taeniformis(48.88%), Spirometra sp(23.25%) and Diphyllobothrium latum (6.97%), eggs of Clonorchis sinensis(2.32%), Ancylostoma tubaeformae(2.32%) and Capillaria sp(4.65%), oocyst of Isospora (2.32%) sp. In haevy infected intestine, mast cells(38 cells/10 villi) were detected in villi and goblet cells(131 cells/$0.1mm^2$) were severely increased in mucosa. Epithelium of intestine was partially deteched B. The end of villi were necrosed and hyperaemia was widely recognized in lamina propria. T taeniaeformis have not the neck, but have 2 layed hooks(anterior : 19, posterior : 19, total : 38).

  • Nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of 19 leopard cats (Prionailurus bangalensis euptilura) obtained from Seoul grand park zoo in South Korea were determined for analysing genetic diversity. In the leopard cats, 3 haplotypes of the partial cytochrome b sequences (603 base-pairs, bp) were identified. Haplotypes obtained from those genes showed existences of at least 3 maternal lineages of leopard cats in Korea. Tamura-Nei nucleotide distance among 3 haplotypes were 0.00. Molecular phylogenetic tree showed the similar clustering of haplotypes for genes. Meanwhile, no individual variations within the leopard cats in S. Korea. Genetic surveillance system of leopard cats in S. Korea is warranted for maintaining biological conservation.

  • We attempted modulation of the hydrogen dilution ratio in a Cat-CVD system to achieve both the minimal incubation layer and the high throughput. We obtained the incubation layer thickness of 3 nm, and were able to grow a 200 nm-thick film having a 70 % crystallinity in 18 minutes.

  • Promoters which are useful for constructing expression vectors for lactic acid bacteria were obtained from the chromosomal DNA of Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis MG1363. pBV5030, a promoter-selection vector, replicates in L. lactis and Escherichia coli and carries a promoterless chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene (cat-86). After examining E. coli transformants which grew on LB media containing chloramphenicol (Cm, 20$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL) , many MG1363 derived DNA fragments which encompass promoter sequences were identified. Some recombinant E. coli cells can grow at the Cm concentration of 1,000$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL. When plasmids from those highly resistant E. coli cells were purified and introduced into L. lactis ssp. lactis MG1614 cells by electroporation, lactococcal transformants showing Cm resistance were obtained. So far, five plasmids with different promoter inserts were introduced into L. lactis MGl614 cells. The maximum level of Cm resistance in L. lactis MG1614 transformants was quite low (20$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL) when compared with that observed in recombinant E. coli cells harboring the same plasmids.

  • A spayed female domestic short-hair cat of unknown age was admitted with a large proliferative mass in the face. Cytology and biopsy results suggested infection with Cryptococcus spp. A latex cryptococcal antigen agglutination test and an ALPHA cryptococcal antigen enzyme immunoassay yielded positive results. Results of canavanine-glycine-bromothymol blue agar test, serotyping and molecular typing by URA5 - RFLP and MLST analysis identified the isolates as C. neoformans var. grubii VNI/ST31. Two other cats were also diagnosed with the same methodology showing Crytococcosis with VNI/ST31. Cats presenting with facial or respiratory signs should be assessed for cryptococcosis in Korea.

  • Radiography, ultrasonography with hydrogram, and contrast studies using radiopaque markers were applied to evaluate alimentary lymphoma in two cats. The hydrogram facilitated the differentiation of pseudo-thickening from true wall thickening, and enabled an evaluation of wall layering and lymph nodes. In case 1, mechanical obstruction of the duodenum was confirmed with barium-impregnated polyethylene spheres (BIPS), a radiopaque marker; however, results obtained in case 2 were not as definitive. We expect that hydrograms and BIPS can be used as valuable alternative methods to evaluate the gastrointestinal (GI) tract although further studies in cases involving GI tumors are needed.

  • Enterococcus faecalis KBL703 has three plasmids(p703/9, p703/5 and p703/4). Within p703/5, the specific DNA region that would confer replication function(replication origin) was searched by transformation experiments. In order to use as the recipient of transformation, two plasmid-cured strainsd were made from this strain. Four recombinant DNA constructs, each containing fragment of p703/5 and CAT(chloramphenicol acetyl transferase) gene were also made. And they were used to transform the plasmid-cured strains. Only one DNA construct containing 3.6 kb SalI fragment was stably maintained as plasmid in these strains. Additional experiment using another Enterococcus faecalis strain(ATCC29212) as a recipient was successfully done and it was confirmed that this newly constructed recombinant plasmid plasimid contained the replication origin from p703/5 plamid.

  • The kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of sulfanilic acid by N-chloro-p-toluene sulfonamide (chloramine-T) have been studied in acid medium. The species of chloramine-T were analysed on the basis of experimental observations and predominantly reactive species was taken into account for proposition of most plausible reaction mechanism. The derived rate law (1) conforms to such a mechanism. $$-\frac{d[CAT]}{dt}=\frac{kK_1[RNHCl][SA]}{K_1+[H^+]}$$ (1) All kinetic parameters were evaluated. Activation parameters such as energy and entropy of activation were calculated to be $(61.67{\pm}0.47)kJmol^{-1}$ and $(-62.71{\pm}2.48)kJmol^{-1}$ respectively employing Eyring equation.
