  • Objectives : This study aims to investigate a wide range of symptoms related to anger and their corresponding treatments as described in Traditional Korean Medical literature. Additionally, the study aims to propose key prescriptions for Intermittent Explosive Disorder(IED), thereby striving to explore potential therapeutic strategies. Methods : This comprehensive study examines the correlations between the pathologies, symptoms, and treatments related to anger, as described in the Yixuerumen (醫學入門), the Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑), and the Xiezhenglun (血證論), and their relevance to IED. Results : Anger impairs the liver, giving rise to a spectrum of symptoms including dry hair, headaches, dizziness, a bitter taste in the mouth, tinnitus, vomiting of blood, sharp chest and flank pains, abdominal discomfort, tremors, diarrhea, and hyperventilation. Furthermore, this heightened anger can serve as a potential trigger for strokes and, considering its potential to hinder recovery from various other conditions, calls for proactive therapeutic intervention. Conclusions : Severe anger has the potential to trigger strokes and hinder recovery from a range of illnesses, underscoring the necessity for tailored and proactive treatment based on the severity of symptoms. In the instance of IED, clinical application of the Danggui Luihuiwan (當歸蘆薈丸) is warranted.

  • Objectives : Contents on causes of male infertility, reproductive health improvement, sexual tips were studied in classical texts of Korean Medicine, followed by representative formulas for male infertility treatment. Methods : Related texts from the Qiusimen chapters of the Yixuerumen, Yixuexinwu, Donguibogam, Nukejinglun, Jiaozhufurenliangfang, Jiyingandmu were collected, and their medical meaning discussed. Results : As immoderate libido and excessive mental consumption leads to sexual dysfunction causing male infertility, 'moderating sexual desire and accumulating Jing' should be the principle for improving reproductive health. Also, sufficient foreplay is recommended. In terms of formula, the Wuziyanzongwan with sufficient therapeutic evidence in both classical texts and contemporary Korean Medicine can be applied in cases of male infertility. Conclusions : Excessive sensual stimulation and immoderate sexual desire consumes the mind and results in decline in male reproductive health. While moderating sexual desire and accumulating Jing through controlling desire, not overworking, moderating anger, drinking in moderation, balanced eating should be the principle for improving reproductive health, having sexual intercourse 2~3 times per week rather than long-term abstinence is recommended. To improve the success rate in pregnancy, sufficient foreplay and time should be done and taken for intercourse. Wuziyanzongwan should be taken for at least three months or longer.

  • Objectives : The Dong-hwa Yakbang Cheobangcheol, a formulary on proprietary medicines created by Dong-hwa Pharmacy in the early 20th century was analyzed with a focus on characteristics of the formulas that were made and sold at the time. Methods : First, external features such as bibliography, table of contents, and descriptive style were examined. In content, licensure of listed formulas, ingredients, dosage form, manufacturing process, effects, properties were medically and pharmacologically analyzed. In this process, the Japanese Pharmacopeial Convention, legislation related to medicinal pharmacology during Japanese Colonial Period, and the Donguibogam were referenced. Results : In terms of form, the Dong-hwa Yakbang Cheobangcheol faithfully follows medicinal related legislation established in the Japanese Colonial Period. However, in terms of content, we could see that most of the formulas were based on the Korean Medical tradition, while Western pharmaceutical technology and chemicals were selectively integrated when necessary. Conclusions : The Dong-hwa Yakbang Cheobangcheol comprehensively displays the situation and goal of Dong-hwa Pharmacy, one of the most representative pharmaceutical companies in proprietary medicine of the early 20th century, in which it was under pressure to adapt to power for survival, while it strived to help improve the health of the people of the time by adopting strengths of both Eastern and Western medicinals.

  • Objectives : The objective of this paper is to review the healing processes employed in the traditional age and discover the unique features found in the Korean Medicine through categorizing and analyzing the distribution of patients, and the aspects and results of treatments as recorded in Gyeongbosinpyeon, a historical text thought to have been authored by a regional doctor active in Joseon during the mid- to late-19th century. Methods : A table is created to view all of the total of 141 medical records introduced in the Gyeongbosinpyeon, and 7 categories were created to each contain 2 to 3 medical records that have special images. The paper provides their translation texts along with the original texts, and analyzed their medical and social significances by comparing each medical record. Results : The clinical competence displayed by the doctor who had worked in Joseon during the 19th century was surprisingly high, and it seems its values are worthy of dissemination when compared with Yeogsimanpil that has been introduced to the world. There is a great significance in how the principle of holistic treatments, the fundamental aspect of Joseon's medical study, was adhered. Additionally, the parts that show the historical text's author's medical activities and their unique characteristics are also worthy of attention. Conclusions : Korean medicine possesses a remarkable text called Donguibogam, but clinical behaviors' successes are not guaranteed solely with textual knowledge. It can be witnessed that such texts of authority and such medical records that have recorded actual activities complement each other in order to improve the quality of Joseon's study of medicine.

  • Objectives : This paper aimed to verify the applicability of mixed extract ofAngelica gigasNakai,Cnidium officinaleMakino,Paeoniala ctifloraPall,Rechmannia glutinosaLibosch,Scutellaria baicalensisGeorgi, which were prescribed for improving inflammation in Donguibogam, as the materials for beauty food and functional medicinal herb cosmetics by manufacturing such mixed extract and evaluating the biological activity of the extract. Methods : The mixed medicinal herb water extract(MMW) and ethanol extract(MME) were freeze-dried to be used as the specimen. We performed electron donating ability, lipid acidification inhibitory activity, anti-inflammatory activity against skin flora, MTT assay, NO inhibitory activity and the protein expression inhibitory activity of iNOS and COX-2.Results : For anti-oxidation experimentation, the electron donating abilities of MMW and MME were above 60.0% and 90.0% at 500 μg/ml, respectively. In the inhibition rate of lipid peroxidation, MMW and MME showed 43.1% and 52.1% at 1,000 μg/ml, respectively. As a result of antimicrobial activity, both the MMW and MME showed significant clear zones forPropionibacterium acnesat 4 mg/disc, but did not indicated the clearzones forStaphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coliandStaphylococcus epidermidis. Anti-inflammatory activity by NO assay showed LPS-induced NO was significantly inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner. Also, the expression of iNOS and COX-2 proteins were significantly inhibited following treatment with MMW and MME of 50 μg/ml.Conclusions : Accordingly, it can be concluded that mixed medicinal herb extract has the potential to beused as a functional food and cosmetic material.

  • The purpose of this paper is to report a newly discovered book whose title is Ikkam (翼鑑) and prepare for a full-scale study. The book, Ikkam, has a variety of contexts in which it seems to be written by Park Ji-won. First, 'Sanin' in 'Yeonam-Sanin' is consistent with the behaviors of Yeonam Park Ji-won who lived in hiding in the Yeonam valley in 1777. In addition, many statements written in the introduction, such as "as we stick to the old things, we do not know a makeshift", "we are well versed in changes" and "many soldiers are not always good" remind us of other writings of Park Ji-won. Moreover, he writes the statements using antithesis. It is the force of writing style of a literary person who is not engaged in medical service. In addition, he puts six qi in the introduction, but it is not as sophisticated as Jejungsinpyeon (濟衆新編). It suggests that this book may be published earlier than Jejungsinpyeon. When comparing Ikkam with Euimunbogam (醫門寶鑑) and Jejungsinpyeon, it seems common to place six qi in the introduction at the time. In addition, through this book, we find that Park Ji-won known as a writer of Geumryosocho (金蓼小抄) has fairly much knowledge in the medicine. We can estimate his passion and depth about the medicine through a longing for a new medical book shown in the introduction of Geumryosocho. However, various approaches to similar disease symptoms shown in the introduction help us to recognize his true qualities in the medicine. In addition, like other experience prescriptions, this book excludes prescriptions using medicinal herbs with toxicity or rare medicinal herbs in the situation with a limited supply of them in remote areas but includes prescriptions which are widely used. It shows that experience prescriptions in the Joseon Dynasty are effective to specifically identify medicinal herbs and prescriptions which are widely used in Korea. These values cannot be compensated by Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑) which has an infinite value.

  • It is well known that NERD(Non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a well known esophageal disease. Symptoms of NERD may be divided into two classes. Important symptoms are acid regurgitation and heartburn. Secondary symptoms are noncardiac chest pain, dysphagia, chronic coughing, hoarseness, sore throat, globus, halitosis, epigastric pain or discomfort and abdominal pain or discomfort related to bowel movement. The relationship between NERD and Tan-San(呑酸) is complex. But the most common symptoms of NERD are acid regurgitation and heartburn. These symptoms arc similar to Tan-San and can be treated with oriental medical herb and acupuncture. Ljintang-Gamibang(二陳湯加味方) mentioned in the Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑) is one of these oriental medical herbs. Therefore, this comparative study between first medical examination and end of medical treatment with Ljintang-Gamibang and acupuncture was made. The clinical progress of NERD was investigated. After treatment, all seven patients showed improvement in all symptoms associated with NERD, including general condition. The results of this study suggest that Ljintang-Gamibang and acupuncture are an effective treatment for NERD and progressive research to develop a practical treatment of NERD are needed.
