Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship of the postural asymmetry to falling experience in the elderly. The subjects, composed of 193 men and women aging from 60 to 90 years, were evaluated in this study. The subjects were divided into a falling experienced group (44.6%, n=86) and a non-falling experienced group (55.4%, n=107). The maximum vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) between the right and left leg, and the ground reaction force (GRF) between the anterior and posterior were statistically different between groups. Also, the muscular strength of the lower extremities and the balance ability were statistically different between the groups. Significant correlation has been found between the postural asymmetry variables (STS duration, STS RL-VGRF-Diff, AP-GRF-Diff) and the fitness tests. Individuals with exercise habit had higher values of postural symmetry and balance control than non-exercised individuals. The quantitative information acquired by performing STS movement using a force platform may be used as indicators of prediction of falling accidents.
