The Efficacy of Sports Drink by Using Schizandra Chinensis

Abstract
BACKGROUND & PURPOSE: Schizandra chinensis is well known for the efficacy of liver function reinforcement, removing thirsty and recovery from fatigue. In the recent study, we examined the efficacy of sports drink by using Schizandra chinensis for long-term and acute supplementation on serum metabolic substrates, electrolyte, stress indicators, related-enzymes and exercise performance, rectal temperature, heat shock protein70(HSP70). SUBJECTS: Elite long-distance runners(male, 21.3yrs, n=16) were selected and divided into two groups; experimental group(EXP, n=8) and control group(CON, n=8). METHODS: In long-term supplementation, beverage was supplemented 3 times per day to EXP. In acute supplementation, beverage was ingested 30minute before exercise. Serum biochemical elements were analyzed by auto blood analyzer. Exercise performance was measured by treadmill exercise test, HSP70 was detected by western blotting, rectal temperature was measured by rectal temperature probe. RESULTS: In long-term supplementation of Schizandra chinensis beverage, blood glucose and Na, Cl level significantly increased and lactate dehydrogenase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase significantly decreased at rest. No differences were in exercise performance and rectal temperature increment and HSP70 concentration between groups. In acute supplementation, blood glucose and Na, Cl level significantly increased during exercise and recovery. CONCLUSIONS: Long and acute supplementation of Schizandra chinensis sports beverage altered blood glucose, lactate dehydrogenase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, Na, Cl levels and affected recovery fatigue.
