Abstract
A series of polyurethanes having different hard segment contents have been synthesized using 3,3'-dimethyldiphenyl 4,4'-diisocyanate (TODI) in order to test the effect of the molecular structure of hard segment on the phase separation behavior and thermal stability of polyurethane (PU). The effect of hard segment content on the thermal stability of polyurethane was evaluated using DSC, FTIR, and SAXS methods. Based on the segmental mixing behavior observed with FTIR and on the domain disruption behavior with SAXS, it was found that increasing the hard segment content enhances the thermal stability of PU. Furthermore, compared with MDI-based PU, TODI-based PU was found to have better thermal stabilities. This difference was explained in terms of the good packing behavior between hard segments in the TODI-based polyurethane due to its linear structure. The effect of molecular structure on the order-disorder transition behavior was much more pronounced when hard segment content was relatively low.
