A Study on the Interlaminar Shear Strength of Thermoplastic Composites with Commingled Yarn

Abstract
Unidirectional composites were fabricated using commingled yarn consisting of glass fiber as the reinforcing fiber and nylon 6, polypropylene, or polyethylene terephthalate as the matrix fibers. In this study, the longitudinal (0$^{\circ}$), 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$ and transverse (90$^{\circ}$) ILSS were investigated by three point bending test. The relationships between the anisotropy of the ILSS and the holding time, with molding pressure of first and second molding, were studied. Compared to the ILSS value of 0$^{\circ}$ specimen, ILSS of Ny/GF is about 52% at 30$^{\circ}$ and 21% at 45$^{\circ}$, ILSS of PP/GF is about 31% at 30$^{\circ}$ and 11% at 45$^{\circ}$, and ILSS of PET/GF is about 24% at 30$^{\circ}$ and 9% at 45$^{\circ}$. ILSS of the second molding product, compared with the first molding product, decreased about 15% and 35% when the fiber orientation is at 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ in Ny/GF composites.
