Current situations of human brucellosis in Korea and research tendency

Abstract
Brucellosis became a major zoonosis with a dramatic increase in case incidence since it was classifiedand controlled as type 3 notifiable disease in Communicable Disease Prevention Act in August 2000.Based on host preference, BruceHa genus is divided into eight species. Among these species, BruceUamelitensis, and B. suis are pathogenic to humans. B. abortus is less virulent, but it nevertheless causesserious social- economic losses in endemic areas through human exposure to aborted calves. Increasingcases of bmcellosis in cattle have occurred in Korea with the large- scale introduction of under screenedKorean native cattle and the herd test that has been conducted since 2004. Accordingly the screening testwas reinforced, the number of human brucellosis has also sharply increased from 16 cases in 2003 to215(Provisiona1 statics) in 2006. A total of 437 cases were reported from 2002 to 2006. By occupation,livestock industry workers, veterinarians, and others including animal by product handlers, lab workeraccounted for 382(87.5%), 44(10%), 11(2.5%) cases, respectively. 44 human isolates were identified B.abortus biovar 1 by AMOS PCR. But 20% of 44 cases were asymptomatic, demonstrating that theinfection can easily develop into chronic conditions. Human brucellosis in K-orea was mainly concernedwith livestock industry and infection by unprotected contact was major route of transmission.
