The effects of iron supplementation on serum parameters, immune cells and aerobic․anaerobic capacity during gradual & rapid weight loss. Exercise Science, 12(2): 173-186, 2003. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of iron supplementation on serum parameters, immune cells and aerobic & anaerobic capacity during gradual(3 weeks) and rapid(4 days) weight loss. The subjects of this study were 21 college male taekwondo atheletic and high school male wrestlers. The way of gradual Weight loss was diet restriction which was composed of one-week term program for three weeks, using plastic suit, sauna. The way of rapid weight loss limit of ordinary eating(having) amount and sweating. Results of this study runs as follows : RBC, Hb, Hct level decreased after weight loss in the GWL, RWL groups but Hb level increased significantly after weight loss in the GWL+IS group. Ferritin level decreased in the GWL, RWL groups but increased after weight loss in the GWL+IS, RWL+IS group. Transferrin level increased significantly in the GWL group but increased after weight loss in the GWL+IS, RWL, RWL+IS groups. WBC level decreased after weight loss in the all groups but decreased significantly after rapid weight loss in the RWL+IS group. T-helper level decreased in the GWL+IS group but increased after weight loss in the GWL, RWL, RWL+IS groups. T-suppressor level decreased significantly in the GWL+IS groups but increased after weight loss in the GWL group. Monocyte level increased in the all group but increased significantly after weight loss in the GWL+IS group. NK cell level decreased in the GWL, GWL+IS groups but increased after weight loss in the RWL, RWL+IS groups. And VO2max were decreased in the GWL, RWL, RWL+IS groups but increased significantly after weight loss in the GWL+IS group. Endurance time decreased in the GWL, RWL groups but decreased after weight loss in the GWL+IS, RWL+IS groups. Peak power and Mean power decreased in the all groups but decreased significantly after weight loss in the GWL+IS group. The data indicated that gradual and rapid weight loss did not have any effect on serum parameters but transferrin and ferritin seemed to be affected by gradual and rapid weight loss. Also, immune cells except T-helper and monocyte seemed to be affected by gradual and rapid weight loss and aerobic and anaerobic capacity were affected by gradual and rapid weight loss. But iron supplementation affected on the maintain of RBC, transferrin, ferritin, and on the increase of Hb, monocyte, aerobic capacity during gradual and rapid weight loss. But WBC, T-helper, NK cell, anaerobic capacity did not affect iron supplementation during gradual and rapid weight loss.
