Abstract
This study deals with a application possibility of an outslope forest road constructed in the regions ofcentral Alpus and Pacific northwest USA in order to introduce into Korea(Hongcheon). The possibilitywas analyzed in 3 viewpoints of technical aspects, economical aspects and problem solution. For analysisof technical possibility precipitation and soil characteristics were considered. With similar summer rainfalland soil groups(SM, SW, SC) there will be no technically significant problems, but summer rainfallconcentration of Hongcheon can play a roll as one of obstacles. Economically observing, in the case ofroads with 50% terrain slope and 2.5m roadbed attatched to cutting side it will be saved approximatelycut volume of 2,937m2 and 9.3 million Won per km, which accounts for at least about 10% of total cost. The outslope road construction may result in a little bit more erosion and failure in road segments. Thesecould be solved by maintaining repose angle, keeping basic engineering principles, enough compaction, and adequate vegetation restoration. The outslope forest roads are outsloped to most rapidly drain runoff from road body. These roads canbe restrictedly applied for a long straight road with under 5% grade, good permeable areas, lowprecipitation regions, and low volume road with up to 3m travel way. It seems to cause the minimumcut volume, have much lower construction and maintenance cost than inslope forest road, and create muchless environmental impact. So it is economically and environmentally sound forest road. But under snowconditions of winter outsloped road may be a little bit dangerous for driving.
