Abstract
Holocene vegetation and climate changes of the Korean central region were reconstructed by pollen records recovered from Trench 12L of the Sacheon-dong archaeological site, Cheongju City, Chungbuk Province. Radiocarbon date indicates that sedimentation of the study area has spanned before/after about 8,000 yr BP. Pollen zones were erected based on changes in pollen assemblages. Pollen subzone, SC-Ia (${\sim}$7,980 yr BP) is characterized by mixed conifer and deciduous broadleaved Forest under cool temperate climatic conditions. With comparison of modern mixed forest, the forest of SC-Ia seems to have been poor. Pollen subzone of SC-Ib (ca. 7,800${\sim}$6,000 yr BP), possibly comparable to hypsithermal, warm and wet climatic conditions were favored to deciduous evergreen and deciduous broadleaved Forest flourished on Mountain-slope. During Pollen Zone, SC-II (?2,000 yr BP${\sim}$), the former forest were replaced again by mixed conifer and deciduous broadleaved Forest due to changed temperate conditions. Pollen assemblages reflect that three times in vegetation types have been changed. Both pollen and freshwater algal assemblages infer that the Sacheong-dong archaeological site has experienced by flood originated from the Musim Stream. Specially, flooding became stronger toward the end of Pollen Zone, SC-I (ca. 6000 yr BP), as evidenced by pollen and upward coarsening of sediment. But floodings of main stream have been occasionally occurred during the period of Pollen Zone, SC-II (?2000 yr BP${\sim}$). Pollen assemblages tentatively suggest that a hiatus or a denudation has existed at boundary between Pollen Zone SC-I and Pollen Zone SC-II. Finally a plenty of radiocarbon dates are strongly required to verify the suggestion herein future.
