Abstract
A study on the benthic foraminiferal fauna from the Seogwipo Formation outcrop and seven drilled cores in Jeju Island, Korea, has been carried out in order to enlighten their biostratigraphy and paleoenvironments. Based on the characteristics of benthic foraminiferal fauna, six benthic foraminiferal assemblage zones in the Seogwipo Formation outcrop and eleven benthic foraminiferal assemblage zones in drilled cores were established. The lower and middle parts of the outcrop consist of mixed fauna of cold and warm water neritic species, whereas the upper part consists of warm fauna in which warm water neritic species are dominant. The benthic foraminiferal faunas in drilled cores also are composed of mixed and warm faunas in the lower and upper parts, respectively. Three ecostratigraphic zones can be divided in the outcrop and drilled cores on the basis of benthic foraminiferal assemblages: Cold-temperate Current Zone, Warm-temperate Current Zone and Warm Current Zone. These ecostratigraphic zones reflect paleoceanographic conditions and their variational modes around Jeju Island at that time. The ecostratigraphy indicates that the sediments from seven drilled cores are well correlated with those from the Seogwipo Fonnation outcrop. The Seogwipo Formation dates from late Late Pliocene to Early Pleistocene in age, being correlated with the Omma Formation of the upper Kakegawa Group and Soga Group in Japan. The benthic foraminiferal faunas in the lower and middle parts of the Seogwipo Formation yielding cold water species are correlated with the Omma-Manganji Fauna, whereas that in the upper part of the formation yielding warm water species is correlated with Younger Omma Fauna of Japan. It is suggested that the cold event identified from the Seogwipo Formation was caused by the migration of oceanographic front in the sea of northeast Asia during the late Pliocene to early Pleistocene.
