Abstract
Korea had established diplomatic relations with Turkey in 1957. Rural Development Administration of Korea had conducted two cooperative research projects to improve disease resistance and to characterize heat-tolerable germplasm of cucurbitaceae vegetables with Turkish institutes, but no active cooperation is being conducted now. We have reviewed the current status and activities of agricultural R&D and extension system in Turkey to look for the possibility of agricultural scientific cooperation. The governmental agricultural research institutions of Turkey consist of three parts : the General Directorate of Agricultural Research in the Ministry of Food Agriculture and Livestock, the Higher Education Council Scientific under the governance of the Ministry of Education, and the Technical Research Council which is directly governed by the Prime Ministry. There are 10 central research institutes, 10 regional research institutes, 21 subject/discipline oriented research stations, 3 plant protection research stations and 5 animal breeding and husbandry research stations in Turkey. Agricultural extension system and the coordinators and specialists who provide extension and other services, are managed by either public or private sectors. Agricultural extension activities are mainly performed by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. In addition, some farmers' associations, agricultural cooperatives, charities, universities and several marketing firms have been activated by training of farmers and extension activities. Mass media have an important role as a part of the agricultural extension system.
