Effect of Long-term Dry-seeded Rice on Growth, Rice Yield and Soil Physicochemical Properties in Rice-Barley Double Cropping System

Abstract
Effect of long-term barley straw incorporation into soil on growth and yield of rice and soil physicochemical properties in the dry-seeded rice under barley-rice double cropping system was investigated for 16 years from 1990 to 2005. Three treatments such as barley straw addition, barley straw removal and rice single cropping were maintained.Generally, seedling stand per ㎡ was higher by 5 to 7 plants in the rice-barley cropping system regardless of barley straw addition or removal than in the rice single cultivation. Barley straw improve soil physicochemical properties due to increase in organic content and porosity of soil. This led to high panicle number per ㎡ in the barley straw addition treatment. The spikelet number per panicle was also greater in the barley straw addition than that in the rice single crop treatment. However, the ripened grain ratio was low in rice-barley cropping system in contrast to that in the rice single cultivation, probably due to the high soil organic content in the rice-barley cropping system.Rice yield in rice-barley double cropping cultivation was increased starting from the second year due to barley straw application, but the stable yield increase was obtained from the 4th year. The increase of rice yield in the barley straw addition treatment for 16 years ranged from 2 to 19% due to higher panicle number (average of 9% for 16 years).
