Status of Gas Hydrate Research in Kore

Gas hydrates have attracted much attention recently as a new clean energy resource substituting conventional oil and gas due to its presumed tremendous amount of volume reaching 10 trillion tons of gas and environment-friendly characteristics. Korea also found gas hydrates potential below 1,000m water depth in the East Sea from the analysis of deep sea seismic surveys during the last 5 years. Gas hydrates can contribute to the rapidly increasing consumption of natural gas in Korea and achieve the self-support target by 2010 which is 30% of the total gas demand. The R&D on gas hydrates was first initiated in 1996 and many projects were performed since then including thermodynamic properties of gas hydrates and optimum model for its production as well as characteristics of gas hydrates formations in deep sea. New ten-year gas hydrates development project started this year, consisting of three phases. The purpose of this R&D project by the Gas Hydrate Research Organization is to confirm the existence of gas hydrates buried in deep East Sea in more detail, that can be sufficient to verify the possibility of alternative energy resource of gas hydrates. If the economic amount and equilibrium conditions along the geological structures would be thoroughly evaluated, positively defined in the first phase, the reserve estimation of gas hydrates field would follow in more schematic ways and the efficient production techniques would be fully studies in the following phases.

가스하이드레이트 기술개발 현황

가스하이드레이트는 전 세계적으로 약 10조 톤에 이르는 막대한 추정매장량과 환경친화적인 장점을 가지고 있어, 고갈의 위험성을 내포한 석유나 천연가스를 장기적으로 대체할 획기적인 신청정 에너지자원으로 각광받고 있다. 우리나라의 경우 동해에서의 예비탐사 결과 수심 약 1,000m이상 되는 심해저 지역에서 가스하이드레이트 부존을 간접적으로 확인하였다. 이러한 가스하이드레이트 개발은 향후 소비가 급격히 증가할 천연가스 보급에 기여함과 동시에 2010년 정부목표인 30%의 천연가스 자급률 달성을 가능케 할 수 있다. 지금까지 우리나라는 동해 지역에 대한 1차 기초탐사를 실시하여 심해지역에서 가스하이드레이트 부존 가능성을 확인하였고, 부존면적에 기초한 단순계산에 의하면 약 6억 톤의 매장량을 예상하고 있다. 이는 현재의 국내 연간소비량 2,000만 톤 기준으로 30년 이상 사용가능한 양이다. 2005년부터는 이전의 예비탐사단계를 뛰어넘어, G/H개발사업단이 발족되어 본격적인 10개년 가스하이드레이트 개발사업을 시작하였다. 사업의 주요내용으로는 2, 3차원 정밀 탐사를 통한 동해 가스하이드레이트 부존 유망지역 정밀파악 및 매장량 평가, 시추를 통한 가스하이드레이트 부존의 직접 확인, 가스하이드레이트 생산을 위한 기반기술 확보 및 시험생산 등이 포함되어 있다.
