Influence of feeding habits and maternal caries experience on children's dental caries incidence

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this research was to investigate such factors as feeding habits, oral hygiene care for young children and maternal caries status influence on caries incidence in children. Methods: 139 pairs of mothers and children aged 3 to 5, who lived in Daegu, participated in this study. Oral examinations, interviews, and Modified Snyder tests were performed and analyzed. Results: Only breast-feeding experienced children’s rate was 10.1%; only nursing bottle feeding experienced children was 38.8%; while that of both experienced children was 51.1%. The DMFT index and DMFS index of mothers, and the dft index and dfs index were related to each other respectively(r=0.192, p<0.05). A higher dft index was indicated in non-breast-feeding experienced children than in breast-feeding experience children. However, there was no significant difference in statistics. Subsequently, it seemed that some factors such as tooth brushing frequency had more of an effect than the influence of feeding style. The score of Modified Snyder test of mothers and infants showed a higher correlation with the dental caries incidences; therefore the caries of mothers had an effect on caries incidences of infants. Conclusion: In order to prevent caries in infants, it is very important to conduct and perform oral hygiene and early caries treatment not only for young children but also for their mothers.
