Abstract
Background: In Korea, the elderly population and the prevalence of dementia has increased rapidly. The aim of this study is to describe and analyze the status in treatment of dementia for recent 5 yr in Korea. Methods: The Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service (HIRA)'s data which had various variables during 5 yr from 2003 to 2007 was used. Dementia was analyzed by the visit days, benefit amounts, and real patients in Out Patient Department (OPD) and admission. In addition, the distributions of the clinical department for dementia were presented. Results: The days of OPD visit and admission for dementia increased from 328,967 (2003, OPD) and 1,821,825 (2003, admission) to 765,599 (2007, OPD) and 7,433,913 (2007, admission). The benefit amounts of OPD and admission increased from 11,884,657,000 won (2003, OPD) and 64,742,232,000 won (2003, admission) to 40,849,297,000 won (2007, OPD) and 366,694,852,000 won (2007, admission). The real patients of OPD and admission increased from 59,861 (2003, OPD) and 18,515 (2003, admission) to 132,869 (2007, OPD) and 63,141 (2007, admission). Among the clinical departments, in 2007, department of neurology had the greatest percentage in visit days (OPD). Conclusions: This study clarifies the magnitude of the dementia treatment in the viewpoint of visit days, benefit amounts, real patients, and the distribution of the clinical department treated at. Department of Neurology had a major role in dementia care, which had been increasing during 5 yr.
