A Study on Symbols of Suppression and Liberty in the Movie

본 연구는 문학의 언어적 표현이 영화에 어떻게 재현되는가 하는 의문에서 출발하였다. 문학작품이 영화화될 때의 표현방법과 그 미적가치를 확인하기 위해 본 연구는 옐리넥의 "피아노 치는 여자"와 이를 원작으로 한 미카엘 하네케 감독의 영화 <피아니스트>를 분석하였다. 원작은 엄마의 감시와 통제 하에 살아온 에리카의 삶을 언어로 섬세하게 묘사한 작품이다. 영화 <피아니스트>의 주제 또한 통제하는 엄마와 그런 억압 속에서 살아 온 주인공 에리카의 욕망의 충돌이다. 영화는 이를 표현하기 위해 여러 이미지 요소를 사용했다. 엄마로 지칭되는 억압의 세계는 닫힌 공간, 어두운 공간으로 표현되었고 발터로 지칭되는 에리카의 외부세계, 즉 욕망의 세계는 열린 공간, 환한 공간으로 표현되었다. 감옥 같은 이중문, 철창, 검은색, 그늘로 상징된 통제의 세계에서 살아 온 에리카의 삶은 비정상적으로 뒤틀려있다. 피아니스트인 그녀의 삶에 가장 중심이 되었을 피아노 또한 억압의 그늘진 세계의 상징으로 표현되었다.
