The heat transfer characteristics of ice storage system of falling film type using sprial coil is investigated. The experimental facilities consisted of a water tank, spiral coils located above the tank, an upper water distributor, and a circulating water pump. Water is distributed uniformally over the spiral coils and it forms falling thin films. In the process of freezing, ice is formed on outside of the spiral coils through recirculation of tank water. In the process of melting, ice is melted with return water from the heat load, while the water is chilled again and drops into the tank. The results of falling film type of ice thermal storage system are as follows. The highly efficient shower flowrates for icing is near $3{\ell}/min$. Icing rates on spiral coils is rosed while brine flowrates is increased. Lower brine temperature is not only increased freezing rates but. also become higher total icing weight and overall heat transfer coefficient. Smaller shower flowrates is obtained lower water temperature on outlet for a long time. The amounts of quantity can be detected more accurately by measuring storage tank weight.

For determining solar benefit hour are two different methods required as a direct calculation which is more accurate but too slow, and a computer graphic protration which is less accurate but too fast. To have the later accurate, the hour to hour interpolation is used to provide less visual deviation. With directly pointing the solar location into the screen coordinate the waldram projection and stereographic projection which needs the number of fast algorithms to calculate the coordinates of the sun path and building configuration casting to the space are applied.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of energy transport using capillary pumped loop with PVA sponge wick. The results obtained from this study are as follows. The configuration of capillary pumped loop was adequate and PVA sponge was of great use for the manufacture of capillary pump. The energy transport reached maximum when the working fluid amount was 750cc the wall temperature distribution indicated high values through out the entire length of the pipe. As the opening of a nozzle was increased, energy transport was increased but the effect was decreased.

Heat transfer characteristics of a low temperature latent heat storage system during the heat storage stage was examined for the circular finned tubes using fatty acid which shows the big density difference during melting as phase change materials. The heat storage vessel has the dimension of 530 mm height, 74 mm inside diameter and inner heat transfer tube is 480 mm in height and 13.5 mm outside diameter. Hot water was employed as the heat transfer fluid. During the heat storage stage, it was found that both conduction and natural convection were the major heat transfer mechanism. It was also found that the effect of natural convection on the heat transfer was more significant for the unfinned tube system than that for the finned tube system. The experimentally determined overall heat transfer coefficients were in the range of $50{\sim}250W/m^2K$ and the correlation for natural convection heat transfer as a function of Nusselt and Rayleigh number was proposed.

Experimental investigation has been carried out to determine drag reducing effects of polymer additives for a plate type heat exchanger(evaporator or condenser) in OTEC power plant applications, where the pressure drop in the heat exchangers takes up $70{\sim}80%$ of the total pumping power in the existing system. The rate of drag reduction was investigated with various polymer concentrations and mass flow rates. Experiments were undertaken for a test section in Alfa-Laval plate heat exchanger utilizing Poly Ethylene Oxide(Mw $5{\times}10^6$) as polymer additives. Concentrations of polymer additives were 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, 200, 400 wppm at $25^{\circ}C$ and mass flow rates were 0.6kg/s, 0.7kg/s, 0.8kg/s and 0.9kg/s in normal operating ranges for a 15kW Alfa-Laval plate heat exchanger. The maximum effects of drag reductions were found at approximately 0.7kg/s of mass flow rate. The results show that there exists the optimum mass flow rate for the plate heat exchanger to obtain maximum drag reductions. Drag reduction of 20% means considerable savings in pumping power for a large size of OTEC plant.

The performance of vertical and horizontal tubes with extended surface of rectangular and triangular cross section was investigated theoretically for boiling heat transfer. A simple method for numerical program assuming one-dimensional heat flow was used to predict the performance of these extended surface tubes. The object of this study was to predict the effects of the height, thickness, numbers and, clearance of the extended surface on boiling heat transfer. The results showed that extended surfaces are quite effective as compared to plane surfaces especially near the bum-out point and to promote heat flux in boiling heat transfer.

[ $H_2O$ ]-NaCl혼합물을 냉축열재로 선택하였으며, 이 혼합물의 상변화온도를 몰농도 변화에 의하여 조절하였다. 그리고 고농도와 저농도의 NaCl과 $H_2O$가 ion-dipole interaction으로 결합하는 구조를 그림으로 가시화하고 가열, 냉각과정에서 $H_2O$-NaCl이 동결, 융해하는 현상을 도시하므로서 융해와 동결과정에서 상변화온도가 2단계로 나타나는 구조적 원인을 구명하였으며, NaCl의 농도변화에 따른 상변화온도를 이론적으로 분석하므로서 실험 및 이론분석 결과의 타당성을 증명할 수 있도록 하였다.
