Aim & Scope

Biomedical Science Letters is the official publication of the Korean Society for Biomedical Laboratory Sciences. It was launched in 1995. The official title of the journal is "Biomedical Science Letters" and the ISO abbreviation of the journal title is "Biomed. Sci. Lett.". The journal is published quarterly on the last day of March, June, September and December. The previous title was "Journal of Experimental & Biomedical Science" (Volume 3, 1997~Volume 19, 2013, pISSN 1738-3226). The current title is "Biomedical Science Letters" (Volume 20, 2014~present, eISSN 2288-7415). Biomedical Science Letters is published by The Korean Society for Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (http://www.biomedsci.or.kr/). The editorial policies are the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, Managing Editor, and Editorial Board member under the general authority of the Publications Committee and the Council. Biomedical Science Letters publishes papers on all aspects of biomedical sciences. Authors should contact the Editor-in-Chief of the Korean Society for Biomedical Laboratory Sciences for publication related inquiries. The Biomedical Science Letters encourages the submission of manuscripts describing primarily original investigations in the broad fields of biomedical sciences, molecular and cellular biology, cancer biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology, physiology and veterinary medicine. Reports of purely laboratory or animal investigations should have a clear bearing on the problems of animal and human diseases. The journal will consider manuscripts that are primarily methodological if the method is novel, if its development poses or answers important biologic questions, or if its description includes data applying it to a study of potential interest to our readership. The Journal publishes reviews and welcome submission of review manuscripts. Both state-of-the-art comprehensive reviews, directed at research scientists in specific fields and more general informative reviews, directed at the broader community of biomedical science investigators are welcome. Authors of reviews should realize that the Journal is multidisciplinary and that review articles for such a journal require appropriate interpretive material.

    The main objective of pathologists is to achieve accurate lesion diagnoses, which has become increasingly challenging due to the growing number of pathological slides that need to be examined. However, using digital technology has made it easier to complete this task compared to older methods. Digital pathology is a specialized field that manages data from digitized specimen slides, utilizing image processing technology to automate and improve analysis. It aims to enhance the precision, reproducibility, and standardization of pathology-based researches, preclinical, and clinical trials through the sophisticated techniques it employs. The advent of whole slide imaging (WSI) technology is revolutionizing the pathology field by replacing glass slides as the primary method of pathology evaluation. Image processing technology that utilizes WSI is being implemented to automate and enhance analysis. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are being developed to assist pathologic diagnosis and detection and segmentation of specific objects. Application of AI-based digital pathology in biomedical researches is classified into four areas: diagnosis and rapid peer review, quantification, prognosis prediction, and education. AI-based digital pathology can result in a higher accuracy rate for lesion diagnosis than using either a pathologist or AI alone. Combining AI with pathologists can enhance and standardize pathology-based investigations, reducing the time and cost required for pathologists to screen tissue slides for abnormalities. And AI-based digital pathology can identify and quantify structures in tissues. Lastly, it can help predict and monitor disease progression and response to therapy, contributing to personalized medicine.

    Pu-erh tea, a popular and traditional Chinese tea, possesses various health-promoting effects, including inhibiting tumor cell progression and preventing type II diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders. However, the precise anti-inflammatory mechanisms are not well understood. In present study, we elucidated the anti-inflammatory mechanism of Pu-erh tea in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW264.7 cells. We explored the effects of Pu-erh tea on the levels of inflammatory-related genes, including inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells. Moreover, we investigated its regulatory effects on nuclear factor-kappa B (NF)-κB and hypoxia-inducible-factor (HIF)-1α activation. The findings of this study demonstrated that Pu-erh tea inhibited the LPS-increased inflammatory cytokines and PGE2 release, as well as COX-2 and iNOS expression. Moreover, we confirmed that the anti-inflammatory mechanism of Pu-erh tea occurs via the inhibition of NF-κB and HIF-1α activation. Conclusively, these findings provide experimental evidence that Pu-erh tea may be useful candidate in the treatment of inflammatory-related diseases.

    Triglyceride (TG) accumulation can cause monocytic death and suppress innate immunity. However, the signaling pathways involved in this phenomenon are not fully understood. This study aimed to examine whether inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is involved in the TG-induced death of THP-1 monocytes. Results showed that iNOS was upregulated in TG-treated THP-1 monocytes, and iNOS inhibition blocked TG-induced monocytic death. In addition, TG-induced poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage and caspase-3 and -7 activation were suppressed by iNOS inhibition. Furthermore, the expression of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) and survivin, which inhibit caspase-3 and -7, was reduced in TG-treated THP-1 monocytes, but iNOS inhibition recovered the TG-induced downregulation of XIAP and survivin expression. Considering that TG-induced monocytic death is triggered by caspase2 and -8, we investigated whether caspase-2 and -8 are linked to the TG-induced expression of iNOS in THP-1 monocytes. When the activities of caspase-2 and -8 were inhibited by specific inhibitors, the TG-induced upregulation of iNOS and downregulation of XIAP and survivin were restored in THP-1 monocytes. These results suggest that TG-induced monocytic death is mediated by the caspase-2/caspase-8/iNOS/XIAP and survivin/executioner caspase/PARP pathways.

    In this study, natural mouthwash was developed based on natural substances based on cinnamon and ginger, which are familiar to the public, to check the effectiveness of mouthwash and changes in microbial distribution. This study was conducted on 24 people who fully explained the purpose and method of the study and agreed to participate among those who visited D University from October 2021 to December 2021. The subject's oral cavity was examined and placed in three groups to have similar conditions, and after using mouthwash for a week, a survey, saliva test, breath measurement test, and PCR test were performed. As a result of the experiment, the amount of saliva after using natural mouthwash increased compared to the control group (P<0.05). In the comparison of bacteria, it was confirmed that Pg and Fn bacteria decreased after using natural mouthwash (Pg t=4.852, P=.002, Fn t=2.888, P=.023). Following this study, it is expected that research on the development and efficacy of natural mouthwash will be conducted through various clinical applications, which will be useful in real life and dental care institutions.

    Pan-Enterovirus (Pan-EV) infects millions of children and infants worldwide every year. As severe infections have recently been reported, the need for monitoring has consequently intensified. Pan-EV is a categorical name for waterborne enteroviruses belonging to the Picornaviridae family, and includes a wide range of pathogens including Coxsackievirus (CoxV), Echovirus (EcoV) and Enterovirus (EV). In this study, we proposed an optimal RT-nested PCR method for diagnosis of various types of Pan-EV in an aquatic environment and developed a positive control. Considering detection sensitivity, specific reaction, and final identification, one condition capable of amplifying 478 bp among the four candidates in the 1st round PCR (RT-PCR) and one condition in the 2nd round PCR (nested PCR) were selected. Through the detection of nucleic acids extracted from 123 groundwater samples and the detection sensitivity test based on artificial spiking in the sample, the methods are optimal for non-disinfected water samples such as groundwater. We developed a positive control for Pan-EV detection that can be amplified to different sizes under the two conditions. Accuracy could be further improved by testing for contamination from the control group. The method proposed in this study and the positive control developed are expected to be used in monitoring Pan-EV in aquatic environments including groundwater through future research using more samples.

    In oriental medicine, the fruit of Actinidia polygama has long been used to alleviate the symptoms of gout, arthritis, and inflammation. In this study, it was to designed to analyze the antibacterial activity of A. polygama ethanol extract (APEE) against Streptococcus mutans, one of the major strains for dental caries, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, one of the critical strains for periodontal disease. The antibacterial activity of APEE was analyzed by disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays. In addition, it was also analyzed the inhibitory effect of APEE on bacterial growth and biofilm formation against both oral pathogens. APEE exhibited its antibacterial effect through the inhibited bacterial diffusion as well as low concentration of MIC and MBC. In addition, APEE significantly inhibited not only bacterial growth but also biofilm formation in a dose-dependent manner. Consequently, APEE showed potent antibacterial activity against both S. mutans and P. gingivalis, which indicates that APEE might be used as a potential antibacterial material for the improvement of oral healthcare.
