Background and Objective: The importance of the presence of eosinophils in the airways of patients with fetal asthma has long been recognized, but the mechanism by which these cells are recruited and retained in the lung are only now being elucidated. Eotaxin is a potent and specific eosinophil chemoattractant that is mobilized in the respiratory epithelium after allergic stimulation. Material and Methods: We used water extracts of Liripois Tuber and pulmonary epithelial cell lines A549(human typeII-like epithelial cells) and human eosinophils. We estimated cytotoxic effects of Liripois Tuber via MTS assay, and estimated the effects of Liripois Tuber on chemokines from prestimulated A549 cells by sandwich ELISA and RT-PCR. We conducted chemotaxis assay on prestimulated eosinophils treated with Liripois Tuber. Result: In this study we demonstrated that
$TNF-{\alpha}$ , IL-4 and$IL-1{\beta}$ induced the accumulation of chemokines mRNA in the pulmonary epithelial cell lines A549 in dose-dependent manner. Chemokines were inhibited by Liripois Tuber in dose-dependent manner. The eosinophil migration was inhibited at high concentration of Liripois Tuber. Conculusion: These findings indicate that the supression of the expression of chemokines can be accomplished by Liripois Tuber treatment, raising the possibility that Liripois Tuber might be of therapeutic value in diseases such as asthma. -
We have analyzed 247 patients who were admitted to the 3rd ICU for intensive care between January 2003 and December 2003 to investigate characteristics of ICU patients and obtain better guidance and management in the ICU. The results are as follows: 1) The total number of patients was 247. The proportion of males was 59.1 %, of females was 40.9%, and the ratio of male to female was about 1.45:1. 2) The most prevalent age group is those in their seventies, the proportion is 33.6%. 3) The total admission days was 3,438days, and mean patient stay being 13.9days. 4) The total number of expired patients was 26, the mortality rate was 10.5%. The mortality in distribution by disease was higest in Cerebral infarction, rate was 53.8%. the proportion of raised intracranial pressure was 42.3%, of hemorrhagic transformation was 11.5%. 5) In distribution by admission channel, Oriental hospital E.R. was 60.7%, Oriental hospital ward was 38.5%, and etc. was 0.8%. 6) The number of patients of Cerebral infarction was 146(59.1%), being the highest in distribution by chief disease and the proportion of MCA territory infarction is highest in the Cerebral infarction(61.6%). 7) In distribution by Oriental Medicine therapy, the proportion of Acupuncture treatment was 15.8%, of Acupuncture treatment combination Herb medication was 78.5%, and of Acupuncture, Herb medication plus subcutaneous Acupuncture treatment was 5.7%.

Scrub typhus is a acute febrile illness by Orientia tsutsugamushi that is endemic in Asian-Pacific areas. It is characterized by fever, rash, eschar, lymphadenopathy. Therapy with Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Chloramphenicol is currently recommended. Here we report a case of tsutsugamushi disease in a 66 year old man had fever, nausea, vommitting, dyspnea, who was successfully treated with East-West intergrative medicine therapy - Antibiotics therapy and Korean traditional medicine(Sasang medicine and acupuncture treatment) - and symptoms improved.

Objectives It is the case study of a critically ill patient with cerebral infarction and acute edematous change at femur due to a hematoma, of whom taken care with herb medicine according to the diagnosis of SCM(Sasang Constitutional Medicine). Methods The syndrome of the patient was diagnosed as a superficial disease of Taeumin. So after the on-set of the femoral edema, Jowiseungchung-tang added Castanea mollissima(Gunyul) and Maladera castanea(Jejo) was used. And we checked the change of the circumferencial size her thigh and followed up the sonography. Results and conclusions The therapy was significantly effective, and the edema was rapidly absorbed. The circumferential size was 83cm at on-set time, but got smaller to 57cm almost same to the healthy side of her thigh, and there was no more hematoma or systemic hemorrhagic sign on the body.

When we prescribed Shiryungtang to a 65 years-old male patient with ARF after stroke, we could observe that his symptoms, I/O balance and laboratory findings were all improved. Therefore, we suggest that shiryungtang might be useful for ARF in the patient with stroke. -
Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a group of autoimmune syndromes consisting of demyelinating and acute axonal degenerating forms of the disease. Typically, Gullain-Barre syndrome can be diagnosed from the patient's symptoms and physical examination such as the rapid onset of weakness, paralysis and loss of reflexes. In most patients, resolution is complete or near complete. Treatment consists of supportive care, ventilatory management (in about one third of patients), and specific therapy with intravenous immunoglobulin or plasmapheresis. This clinical report is about suspected acute severe Guillain-Barre syndrome patient, 61-year-old man had quadriplegia, facial palsy, dysphasia, respiratory failure. After 5 weeks of East-West integrative medicine therapy - Conventional Conservative therapy(plasmaphresis and intravenous immunoglobulin) and Korean traditional medicine(Sasang medicine and acupuncture treatment) - most symptoms improved.

Patients with cerebellar infarction often complain of many symptom-vertigo, gait disturbance, nausea, vomiting. Especially, Vertigo is the main symptom, and patients cannot achieve normal activity in daily life. When we prescribed Banhabakchulchunma-tang and Gastrodiae Rhizoma extract to a 61year-old female stroke patient with vertigo, we could observe that the symptom was improved rapidly after treatment. Therefore we suggest that Banhabakchulchunma-tang which increase Chunma in quantity is very useful for vertigo after stroke. Further case studies of herbal treatment of this ailment are needed.
