Laser welding application for car body manufacturing has many advantages in the stiffness and the lightness of vehicle, the productivity of assembly line, and the degree of freedom in design. This presentation will express the innovation of car body manufacturing including parameter optimization, process modeling, and system integration. In this application the investment for systems was cut down dramatically by real time switching over the laser path between two welding stations. Points of technical discussion are as follows; optimization of parameters such as laser power, robot speed and trajectory, compact and useful design of jig & fixture to assure welding quality for 3 sheet-layer zinc-coated steel, system integration between 4㎾ Nd:YAG laser device and the other systems, on-line real time welding quality monitoring system, perfect safety standards for high power laser, minimization of consumption costs such as arc lamp, protective glass for optic, etc. This application was successfully launched mass production line in 2001. The laser-welded line of side panel consists of 122 stitches totally. And the length is about 2.4m.

A major concern in Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding process is the determination of welding process variables such as wire diameter, gas flow rate, welding speed, arc current and welding voltage and their effects on the desired weld bead dimensions and shape. To successfully accomplish this objective, 81 welded samples from mild steel AS 1204 flats adopting the bead-on-plate technique were employed in the experiment. The experimental results were used to develop a mathematical model to predict the magnitude of bead geometry as follows; weld bead width, weld bead height, weld bead penetration depth, weld penetration shape factor, weld reinforcement shape factor, weld bead total area, weld bead penetration area, weld bead reinforcement area, weld bead dilution, length of weld bead penetration boundary and length of weld bead reinforcement boundary, and to establish the relationships between weld process parameters and bead geomery. Multiple regression analysis was employed for investigating and modeling the GMA process and significance test techniques were applied for the interpretation of the experimental data.

During the laser welding, weldments are suddenly heated and cooled by laser beam of high density energy. This phenomenon gives an occasion to complex welding residual stresses, which have a great influence on structural instability, in laser welds. However, relevant researches on this field are not sufficient until now and residual stress measurements have experimental and practical limitations. From these reasons, a numerical simulation may be attractive in order to solve the residual stress problem. For clarifying the distribution of heat and welding residual stresses in laser welds with the nail-head shape, authors conduct the finite element analysis (two-dimensional unstationary heat conduction & thermal elastic and plastic analysis). From the results, we can confirm the stress concentration occurs at the place of melting line shape changed in laser welds with the nail-head shape.

The effect of the welding speeds on the weld bead shape, microstructure, and mechanical properties in type 304 austenitic stainless steels was investigated by microscopic test, Erichsen test and tensile test. In this study welds were produced using autogeneous Direct Current Straight Polarity (DCSP) and pulsed current GTA welding. This study shows the ferrite content, ductility, tensile strength and elongation of high speed welds are decreased with increasing welding speed. The high speed welds exhibits satisfactory tensile strength, though the ductility is not good as that of the base metal.

The ferritic stainless steels are generally considered to have poor weldability compared with that of the austenitic stainless steels. However the primary advantages of ferritic stainless steels include lower material cost than the more commonly used austenitic stainless steels and a greater resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Thus, the weldability of ferritic stainless steels was investigated in this study. In concerning the weldability, Grain size measurement test, Erichsen test and Varestraint test were involved. full penetration welds were produced by autogeneous direct current straight polarity (DCSP) and pulsed currents gas tungsten arc welding (GIAW) and the effect of pulsed currents welding on the welds was compared to that of DCSP welding. The results showed that pulsed current was effective to refine grain size in the weld metal and the finest grain size was obtained at the frequency of 150Hz. In addition, the ductility of welds was lower than that of base metal. Finally, autogeneous type 444 welds were less susceptible to macro solidification cracks, but more sensitive to micro cracks; SEM/EDS analysis indicated that all the inclusions in the crack showed enrichment of Mn, Si, O and S.

It has been used many kinds of horizontal butt-welding methods at block-to-block erection stage in shipbuilding companies. For examples, some companies use conventional FCAW process with one side or both sides groove joint welding, others use carriage with torch holder type mechanized welding method. Although lots of efforts were done until now, some problems in quality and productivity still remain in ship's hull welding. In this study, we have attempted to raise productivity and quality on horizontal position of welding with following 3 items. 1) Prepare groove condition with no root gap for making easy fit-up work. 2) Develop improved MAG (100%
$CO_2$ gas shielding) welding process with solid wire for making sound root bead from one side. 3) Develop and apply quite new automatic welding carriage. The stability of new welding process was confirmed by conducting mechanical tests of weldments to verify the soundness of weldments. -
The welded specimens were made by butt welding of the 2 wires of 50mm length using the pulsed YAG laser. The laser welded wires were tested for investigating the shape memory effect and the ability of super elasticity. The fatigue properties of the welded wires were investigated using the rotary bending fatigue tester specially designed for wires. Moreover, the effect of defocusing distance during laser welding on the static and fatigue properties was Investigated. The shape memory effect and super elasticity of the laser welded wires were approximately identical with that of base metal at the test temperature below 353K. However, the welded wires were broken within elastic limit at the test temperature above 353k. Under the cyclic bending loading conditions, the welded wires could be useful only below the elastic limit, while the base metal had sufficient fatigue life even the stress induced M-phase region. The fatigue strength of the welded wires was about half of that of the base metal. The deterioration of the static and fatigue properties in the welded wires was proven to be from the large difference of the transformation behavior between the base metal and welded part that is caused by vaporization of Ni-content at the welded part during the welding process. The defocusing distance below 3mm acted more largely on lowering the strength of the welded wires than that of 6mm or 8mm.

Welding using lasers can be mass-produced in high speed. In the laser welding, performing real-time monitoring system of the welding quality is very important in enhancing the efficiency of welding. In this study, the plasma and molten metal which are generated during laser welding were measured using the UV sensor and IR sensors. The results of laser welding were classified into five categories such as optimal heat input, little low heat input, low heat input, partial joining due to gap mismatch, and nozzle deviation. Also, a system was formulated which uses the measured signals with a fuzzy pattern recognition method which is used to perform real-time evaluation of the welding quality and the defects which can occur in laser welding.

It is important to evaluate the fracture initiation behaviors of steel structure. It has been well known that the ductile cracking of steel would be accelerated by triaxial stress state. Recently, the characteristics of critical crack initiation of steels are quantitatively estimated using the two-parameters, that is, equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality, criterion. This study is paid to the fundamental clarification of the effect of notch radius, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining on critical condition to initiate ductile crack using two-parameters. Hense, the crack initiation testing were conducted under static loading using round bar specimens with circumferential notch. To evaluate the stress/strain state in the specimens was used thermal elastic-plastic FE-analysis. The result showed that equivalent plastic strain to initiate ductile crack expressed as a function of stress triaxiality obtained from the homogeneous specimens with circumferential notched under static loading. And it was evaluated that by using this two-parameters criterion, the critical crack initiation of homogeneous specimens under static loading.

The education examination and qualification systems around the world are now changing rapidly and unifying as one system. The Korean national system should be harmonious with this international tendency, in order to overcome the high degree of international economic competition. In this article, the current state of the international and national systems are critically compared and discussed with the intention of proposing improvements to the Korean national system. The Korean Welding Society has revamped its system so that its certificates might be recognized by the welding institutions in foreign countries such as the European Welding Federation (EWF) and still be recognized by the Korean Government. Their desire to join the system of International Institute of Welding (IIW).
