Development of a Hibiscus syriacus 'Danna' with Small and Vivid Red Eye Spot on Bright Pink Petals

단심이 작고 선명한 홍단심계 무궁화 '단아' 육성

A new Hibiscus syriacus 'Danna' was developed at the National Institute of Forest Science in 2013. It was initially derived from an artificial cross in 2004, between H. syriacus '$Han{\breve{o}}l$', a seed parent, a Korean local cultivar with vigorous growth and H. syriacus '$Han{\breve{o}}l$-tanshim', as a pollen parent, with long bloom period. 'Danna' was preliminarily selected as 'KFRI-HH03' for the aesthetic and stable quality of its unique color of its flower and rapid growth in elongation in 2008. Trial evaluation was conducted for 6 years (2008 - 2013), meanwhile, all investigated traits were retained in rooted cuttings originated from it. 'Danna' had a bright pink flower with very small red eye zone. Its flower diameter is 111.3 mm; length of red eye spot on petals is 13.8 mm. Leaves were 71.3 mm long and 43.1 mm wide, and petiole length was 14.2 mm. Flowering period of the cultivar investigated in 2013 was 81 days. It was registered as a new cultivar at the Korea Seed & Variety Service in 2015 (Grant Number 5756). Its tree habit shows vigorous and fast growth and is upright, so it can be used as an ornamental tree or a street tree.

무궁화 '단아'는 2004년에 절간 생장이 빠르고 곁가지 발달이 왕성한 홍단심계 '한얼'(H. syriacus '$Han{\breve{o}}l$')을 모본으로, 개화기간이 100일에 이르며 개화량이 많고 결실량은 적은 백단심계 '한얼단심'(H. syriacus '$Han{\breve{o}}l$-tanshim')을 화분친으로 인공교배 후 양묘된 실생묘로부터 선발되었다. 2008년 3개체를 1차 선발한 후 2013년까지 두 세대에 걸쳐 삽목증식 및 형질 안정성 검정을 수행하고, 2013년 가을 'KFRI-HH03'을 최종 선발하여 '단아'로 명명하였다. 해당 품종은 직립형으로 가지가 다소 곧추 서며 연간 신초 길이생장이 평균 73.3cm이고 5년생 삽목묘 평균 수고가 186.6cm에 달하므로 교목형으로 유도하여 가로수 또는 조경수로 이용하기 적당하다. 전체적인 꽃의 형태는 접시형으로 평균 직경이 111.3mm에 이르는 홍단심계 홑꽃이며, 꽃잎 길이/너비 비율은 약 1.0으로 꽃잎 끝이 서로 겹치는 I-c형이다. 꽃잎색은 P76A로 맑은 연분홍색이며, 붉은색의 선명한 단심은 지름 13.6mm로 매우 작고 단심선이 거의 없다. 2013년 조사된 개화 시작일은 7월 8일, 개화종료일은 9월 28일로 총 개화기간은 81일에 달하였다. 잎의 전체적인 모양은 둥그스름한 타원형으로 잎몸의 길이/너비 비율은 1.7이며, 엽병 길이는 14.2mm로 대조품종 대비 긴 편이다. 잎몸의 열편은 미미하고 잎몸 가장자리 물결 정도 및 결각은 보통이다.
