Abstract

A diagnosis of negative view about the 20th century architecture in Paris, France may be newly evaluated in the 60s and 70s. During that period, accompanied by the advent of the notion of collective memory from which the social shape of the past has been revealed, social studies on architecture and urbanism played a dominant role to make it possible for a new architectural disposition to emerge to struggle against the process of urbanization which preceded the industrialization. At the same time, the avant-garde utopian conception was formed as another critical architectural disposition corresponding to specific practices based on 19th century's utopian movements. These two phenomena embraced the generation of two predominant architectural dispositions, the 'urban architecture' and 'subterranean urban architecture', respectively, which account for the architecture and urbanism of the 60s and 70s. It is understood therefore that, in light of these aspects, two architectural and urban phenomena constituted positive factors for establishing a new image for Paris imparting a significant meaning to the modern architecture in Paris, France.
