Independent religious acceptance and human salvation in The Moving Castle

『움직이는 성』에 나타난 종교의 주체적 수용 양상

The purpose of this study was to analyze The Moving Castle byHwang Sun-won, which shed light onto the relations betweenChristianity and shamanism in a unique way. Korean novels on conflictsbetween Christianity and shamanism took a simple scheme of traditionalshamanism winning a victory or Christianity, the symbol of moderntimes, winning a victory. In addition to depicting the process ofChristianity taking root in the traditional culture of Korea via conflicts,The Moving Castle demonstrated that there must be internalization andnaturalization through a process of co-existence and reconciliation. Thenovel resolved the worries regarding the indigenization of Christianityaround Jun-tae and showed the practical aspects of Christianity aroundSeong-ho.

기독교와 무속의 갈등과 경합을 중요 모티프로 한 한국소설은, 기독교와 무속을 상호배타적으로 그린다는 뚜렷한 특징을 보인다. 무속의 승리로 끝나든, 기독교의 승리로 끝나든, 어느 한편이 일방적인 승리를 거두는 것으로 소설이 종결된다는 것이다. 한국소설이 기독교와 무속을 상호배타적인 관계로 상정하는 편향성을 보인다는 점을 상기할 때, 황순원의 『움직이는 성』이 두 종교를 다루는 독특한 방식에 주목할 필요가 있다. 이 소설은 어느 편이 승리하느냐가 아니라, 무속과 기독교가 한국문화와 한국인의 심성에 어떻게 작용해왔는지, 그것에 포함된 문제가 무엇인지에 더 깊은 관심을 보이고 있다. 즉 갈등과 공존을 거쳐 종교가 내면화, 토착화 되어야 함을 설득력 있게 보여주었다고 평가할 수 있다는 것이다. 본고에서는 『움직이는 성』의 이 같은 주제의식이, 1960년대 중후반 기독교계의 토착화 논쟁과 관련되어 있다고 보았으며, 특히 준태와 성호 두 인물을 중심으로 하여 기독교 토착화에 대한 고민을 형상화하였다고 보았다.
