1950, 60년대 주한미공보원(USIS) 영화의 ‘아시아 문화’ 표상에 대한 고찰

A Study on USIS Korea’s Film and the Representation of Asian Culture in 1950s and 1960s

냉전기 미디어에 대한 본격적인 연구를 요청하는 시론(試論)으로서 이 논문은 영화라는 미디어를 중심으로 문화냉전을 재고해보고자 했다. 냉전 이데올로기에 미디어라는 요소를 결합함으로써 미국이 의도했던 자유아시아(Free Asia) 표상이 어떻게 만들어지고 전파되었는가를 고찰하기 위해 한국에서 USIS의 영화 제작 활동을 살펴보고 USIS가 한국에서 상영한 영화 중 ‘아시아 문화(Asian Culture)’로 분류된 필름을 검토해 보았다. 이차세계대전 이후 팍스 아메리카나(Pax Americana)를 구가했던 미국이 아시아에서 문화외교를 통해 의도했던 바는 아시아의 문화를 이해하고 후원하는 문화제국으로서의 자신의 위상을 확보하는 것에 있었다. 이 논문에서는 USIS 영화의 아시아 문화 표상을 분석함으로써 그 점을 검증하고 미국과 아시아의 문화교류가 냉전 오리엔탈리즘에 의해 구성된 미국의 아시아 상상과 어떤 관계가 있는지 살펴본다.

This paper tries to rethink the Cultural Cold War focusing on cinemato request serious studies hereafter on the Cold War media. To considerhow the representation of Free Asia intended by U.S. was made andspread through combining the Cold War ideology with Media, I examineUSIS Korea’s local Film Production and the films classed as AsianCulture among the films screened in Korea by USIS Korea. What U.S.enjoying the Pax Americana after the WWⅡ intended through culturaldiplomacy in Asia is to secure the status of cultural empire tounderstand and support Asian culture. I prove it by analysing howUSIS Film represented Asian culture and argue how the culturalexchange between U.S. and Asia was related to American’s imaginationfor Asia made up by Cold War Orientalism.
