Abstract

From the 1970's, the typology of the individual house and the layout of the rural village began to the change in South Korea. This study is intended to provide fundamental resources for the practical sizes of houses in rural areas according to their environment as well as in response to the rapidly aging society. This study analyzed forty-nine houses in Do-jin village; documenting the typology and scale of the main buildings and annexes based on the construction dates, materials, sizes, uses, and the residents' life pattern (including the types of crops and storage use). The result of the study shows that the types of the seasonal agriculture products produced has a substantial effect on the usage and scale of the main building (the living space) and its annex (the storage space). The average size of the analyzed village house is approximately $172.6m^2$; $65.1m^2$ for the main building and $107.5m^2$ for the annex. The annex buildings were on average $30m^2$ larger when the use included animal stockbreeding as well as the typical agricultural storage. It is expected that due to the aging society and reduced number of residents in the rural villages, the practical size of the typical rural house will be reduced in size.
