조지훈 시의 초기 판본에 대하여 -「승무」의 판본과 출생 기록 등을 중심으로

문단과 학계 등 다방면에 걸쳐 왕성한 활동을 펼치던 지훈(芝薰) 조동탁(趙東卓)은 1968년 5월 17일 홀연히 타계하였다. 그를 흠모하고 따르는 제자와 사람들이 많았던 까닭에 그의 부음은 사람들에게 커다란 충격으로 받아들여졌던 것이다. 정지용의 추천을 받아 문단에 등단한 조지훈은 1946년 간행한 박두진, 박목월과의 삼인 합동 시집 『청록집』으로 세인의 주목을 받았으며 1950년대에는 지조론을 비롯한 명론설로 일세를 풍미하였고 1960년대에는 한국학의 초석을 마련하는 학자로서 명성을 얻었다. 시인으로 출발한 그의 역정은 그가 지닌 다양한 역량으로 인해 다면적인 모습으로 펼쳐지게 되는데 이는 한국의 전통적인 선비들이 지향하는 전인적인 특성을 그가 그대로 체현하여 보여주었기 때문이다. 그런데 최근 지훈에 대한 자료를 세밀히 검토하는 과정에서 그의 작품에 대한 실증적 검토가 부족하다는 사실을 발견하였다. 또한 그의 출생에 따른 정확한 연대도 이설이 제기되고 있다는 점에서 이 연구는 이 러한 기초적 사실들에 대하여 철저한 검증을 시도하였다. 일차적으로는 출생년도와 직장 이동 문제를 검토하고 다음으로 여러 판본이 공존하는「승무」에 대한 비교 연구를 통해 대표적인 정전을 확정해 보려는 것이 이 연구의 목표이다. 이를 위해 고려대학교 교무처에 보관된 조지훈의 친필이력서를 발굴하여 이 논문에 사용하였다는 것은 실증적인 자료 검증이라는 점에서 하나의 성과라고 하겠다. 우선 처음 논의는 조지훈이 음력으로는 1920년 12월 3일 경신년 생이며 양력으로는 1921년 1월 11일 생임을 밝혀 낸 것이다. 이를 통해 그 동안 있어 왔던 출생 연월일에 대한 논란이 종료될 것으로 기대한다. 다음 논의는「승무」의 판본 문제이다.「승무」는 그 동안 출간되는 판의 편집자들의 판단에 따라 여러 가지로 다른 형태를 보여 주고 있는데 이는 크게 두 가지 계열로 정리된다. 하나는 문장판 계열이며 다른 하나는 청록집계열의 판본이다. 조지훈 자신의 창작 의도나 첨삭 과정으로 보아 문장판을 원형으로 보고『조지훈시선』(1956)에 이르러「승무」가 현대적으로 완전한 형태에 가까운 정본이 이루어졌다는 것을 구체적이고 사실적인 검증을 통해 입증한 것이 이번 연구의 성과라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

Cho Dong Tak, whose pen name was Ji Whoon suddenly died onMay 17, 1968. His death was a great shock to the people because hewas respected and followed by many people as well as his disciples.Cho Ji Whoon, who made a debut at literary circles at therecommendation of Chung Ji Yong came into the spotlight throughChungnokjib(A Collection of Blue Roe Deer), a joint poetry bookpublished in 1946 by three poets including Park Doo Jin and Park MokWol. Ji Whoon was most influential in the 1950s by his excellent viewsas revealed in "The Theory of Principle", while making his reputation asa scholar who layed the foundation of the Korean Studies in the 1960s.His career starting from a lyric poet developed in various aspects due tohis great capabilities. It proved that he embodied in person thecharacteristics of a whole man that was aimed at by the classicalKorean scholars.Recent investigations of the materials about Ji Whoon showed thatthe empirical study of his work has not been enough as evinced indifferent views of his birth date. This paper aims to present theproblems concerning his birth date and the movements of his job, andthen to settle the representative canon of "A Buddhist Dance" throughthe comparison and analysis of the different texts. His curriculum vitaewhich was kept at the office of the academic affairs of KoreaUniversity was found and used in this paper. As for his birth date, therecords showed that Ji Whoon was born on December 3 of the lunarcalendar, 1920, that is, January 11 of the solar calendar, 1921. And as regards the texts of "A Buddhist Dance" there are generally two kindsof texts: one is the text of a literary journal Munjang(The Sentence),and the other that of Chungnokjib. The investigations show thatMunjang was the original text of "A Buddhist Dance", and a nearlyperfect canonical text of "A Buddhist Dance" was made only throughThe Selected Poetry of Cho Ji Whoon published in 1956. It may becalled a result that this process was done through the empirical andfactual verification.
