Abstract

To obtain fabrics with special functions, several cellulose fabrics such as cotton(plain and jacquard), rayon(plain), and tencel(twill) are treated with relatively high concentration chitosan solutions by different methods of padding and printing. Mechanical properties of chitosan treated cellulose fabrics treated by different methods were investigated by KES(Kawabata Evaluation System). The surface morphology of fabrics was observed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). In chitosan treated cellulose fabrics, tensile energy(WT) and extensibility(EM) values decrease, and cellulose fabrics treated by padding have lower values than those treated by printing. The cellulose fabrics treated with chitosan differ in bending rigidity(B) and shear rigidity(G) according to the chitosan treatment method and the kind of fabrics, and cellulose fabrics treated by padding method have higher values than those treated by printing method. The change in the mechanical properties of the fabrics treated using the padding process is less significant than that using the printing process.
