Effect of Liquid Ammonia and Low-Temperature Plasma Treatments on Desizing, Dyeing, and Mechanical Properties of Cotton Gray Fabric

Abstract

Gray broad cotton fabrics were treated with liquid ammonia(NH$_3$), air low-temperature plasma, and NH$_3$/air plasma. The treated fabrics were processed by desiring and scouring(Pl), hot washing/bleaching(P2), hot washing/bleaching/mercerization(P3), and desiring and souring/bleaching/mercerization(P4). Iodine reaction was investigated to evaluate the effect of NH$_3$, air plasma, and NH$_3$/air plasma pretreatments on desizing. Also moisture regain, water absorption, dyeing and mechanical properties were evaluated. The hot washing/bleaching(P2) was effective in removing the sizing agent, especially, P2 process after air plasma and NH$_3$/air plasma pretreatments. Dyeing rate and equilibrium dye uptake were increased by NH$_3$ and NH$_3$/air plasma pretreatment. In case of Pl process, it seems that NH$_3$treatment contributes to a sleazier hand of fabric by decreasing G, 2HG, 2HG5, B, and 2HB values.
