최근 인터넷 기술 및 멀티미디어 기술의 발전에 따라 인터넷은 많은 영역에서 새로운 응용 분야를 개발해 나가고 있다. 특히 교육 영역에 있어서는 인터넷의 응용으로 획기적인 발전을 이루어 내고 있으며 새로운 패러다임의 교육 방법을 제시하고 있다. 이중 온라인 학습을 이용한 학습은 기존의 전통적인 오프라인 교육에서 벗어난 새로운 방안의 교육 방법이며 이는 기존의 오프라인 학습과는 다르게 시간과 공간에 구애 받지 않고 언제 어디서나 강의를 수강할 수 있다는 점에서는 매우 효율적인 학습이다. 이러한 온라인 강의는 많은 장점에도 불구하고 여러 가지 문제점을 내포하고 있다. 학습의 공간이 온라인상에서 이루어진다는 점에서 학생들의 관리 및 학습효과, 평가의 신뢰도가 많이 부족한 단점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 여러 가지 문제점중 학습자의 능동적인 학습태도를 유도하고 학습자의 출결에 대한 신뢰도를 높이고자 얼굴검출 시스템을 이용한 학습자 학습 집중도 시스템을 제안하였다.
