Analysis of the internal state of the blast furnace is necessary to predict and to control the operating conditions. Especially, it is important to develop models of the blast furnace to predict the cohesive zone because shape of the cohesive zone influences overall operating conditions of blast furnace such as gas flow, chemical reactions and temperature. Because many previous blast furnace models have assumed cohesive zone to be fixed, it was not possible to evaluate the shape change of cohesive zone in relation with operating conditions such as PCR, blast condition, and production rate. In this study, an axi-symmetric 2-dimensional steady state model is proposed to simulate blast furnace processes. In this model, cohesive zone is determined by the solid temperature. Finite volume method is employed for numerical simulation. To find location of the cohesive zone, entire calculation procedure is iterated until converged. Through this approach, shape of the cohesive zone, velocity and temperature within the furnace are predicted from the model.
The shape and size of the plastic zone around the crack tip are analyzed under pure mode I, pure mode II and mixed mode (I+II) loading for small scale yielding and for both plane stress and plane strain conditions. A new analytical formulation is presented to determine the radius of the plastic zone in a non-dimensional form. In particular, the effect of T-stress on the plastic zone around the crack tip is studied. The results of this investigation indicate that the stress field with a T-stress always yields a larger plastic zone than the field without a T-stress. It is found that under predominantly mode I loading, the effect of a negative T-stress on the size of the plastic zone is more dramatic than a positive T-stress. However, when mode II portion of loading is dominating the effect of both positive and negative T-stresses on the size of the plastic zone is almost equal. For validating the analytical results, several finite element analyses were performed. It is shown that the results obtained by the proposed analytical formulation are in very good agreements with those obtained from the finite element analyses.
To evaluate behavior in representing solute transport in natural streams, the storage zone model of the axially periodic transient storage zones is developed. The periodic transient storage zone model and continuous storage zone model are verified using the parameters and the tracer concentration vs. time curves observed in laboratory channels. The periodic storage zone model best fit the measured concentration vs. time curves, while the continuous storage model fails to describe some fluctuations and the plateau region of the tail occurring in a discontinuous transient storage system. Dispersion data from Shingobee River, Minnesota, U. S. A. show that the concentration curves simulated by the proposed model fit the observed concentration curves well.
The evaluation of the elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1C}$ was performed on the center of weld metal(CWM), the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal (BM) of API 5LB steel pipes welded by the high frequency electric resistance welding. The $J_{1C}$ was evaluated by the JSME R-Curve and JSME SZW methods using the smooth and side-grooved specimens. The results are as follows; (1) The $J_{1C}$ values by the SZW method are overestimated as compared with those by the R-curve method, because the micro-crack is formed as SZW increase with the deformation at SZ after initiation of the ductile crack. (2) The everage of $J_{1C}$ values by the the R-curve and the SZW methods in side-grooved specimens tended to decrease in comparison with smooth specimens 9.42% at CWM, 4.2% at HAZ, 23.2% at BM, respectively. (3) The boundary of the fatigue pre-crack, stretched zone, and dimple regions appeared more clearly in side-grooved specimens, for the slight change of SZW in the direction of the plate thickness, as compared with smooth specimens.
A prediction of penetration and heat affected zone by using Finite Element Method in CO$_{2}$ Arc Welding has been discussed this paper. The temperature distribution of a base metal produced by the CO$_{2}$ arc welding processing is analyzed by using a three dimensional finite element model. The common finite element program ANSYS 4.4A was employed to obtain the numerical results. Temperature dependent material properties, effect of latent heat, and the convective boundary conditions are included in the model. Numerically predicted sizes of the penetration and the heat affected zone are compared with the experimentally observed values. As a result, there was a slight difference between numerical analysis values and experimentally observed values. For in the case of heat affected zone, it was not considered a precise forced convective coefficient value, and in the case of penetration, it was not, considered a arc force.

In this study, the welded residual stresses test was carried out with pure titanium and TIG welded material using in chemical plants an airplane frames etc.. The relationship between process parameters and residual stresses is complex since a number of factors are involved. Extensive studies have been carried out to determine the effects of various process parameters on residual stress. The result of micro-hardness about butt welded spacemen was measured of low hardness value in the melting metal zone. The residual stress of welded zone on the Titanium plate by the sectioning method and finite element method was high measured in the spacemen of high current and voltage. Also, compressive residual stress in the range of distance about 15∼20mm from the middle of the deposited metal area is very change. The result of impact test about butt welded spacemen of pure titanium plate was measured of very difference in the welded bead, heat affect zone and base metal, and be measured of high impact value in the heat affect zone. The measure result of welded residual stresses about pure titanium is high measured hen nominal steel plate. The V-Type butt welded spacemen, that of the measurement result on the welded residual stress is high measure then X-Type butt welded spacemen.

Fracture models and criteria of adhesive with two parameters, namely $G_C$ and ${\sigma}_{max}$, have been developed to describe the fracture process of adhesive joints. Cohesive zone model(CZM) is a representative two parameter failure criteria approach. In CZM, ${\sigma}_{max}$ is a critical, limiting maximum value of the stress in the damage zone ahead of the crack and is assumed to have some physical significance in adhesive failure. Based on CZM and finite element analysis method, the relationship between fracture load and adhesive properties, as $G_{IC)$ and $({\sigma}_{max})_I$, was investigated in adhesively bonded joint tensile test and T-peel test. The two parameters in tensile mode loading were evaluated by using the relationship. The value of $G_{\IC}$ evaluated by proposed method showed close agreement with analytical solution for tapered double cantilever beam(TDCB) test which proposed in an ASTM standard.
In this study, we developed the 2.5D EM modeling and inversion algorithm for cross-hole source and receiver geometry. Considering the cross-hole environment, we use a VMD (vertical magnetic dipole) as a source and vertical magnetic fields as a measuring data. Developed inversion algorithm is tested for the isolated block model which has a conductive and a resistivity anomaly respectively. For the conductive anomaly, its size and resistivity are inverted well on the inversion results, while for the resistive anomaly, the location of anomalous block is shown on the inverted section, but its values are far from the exact value. Furthermore, artificial conductive anomalies are shown around the resistive anomalous zone. If we consider the inversion artifact shown in the test inversion of restive block, it is almost impossible to image the resistive zone. However, the main target of EM tomography in the engineering problem is conductive target such as fault zone, and contaminated zone etc., EM tomography algorithm can be used for detecting the anomalous zone.

The boundary element method was used for studying singularities of an interface crack with contact zones. Because the contact zone size was extremely small in a tention field, a large number of Gaussian points were is used for numerical integration of the Kernels. In order to estimate the contact zone size, iteration method was used. The interface crack tips with contact zones showed no oscillatory behavior and J-integral values across the interface were conserved.

We applied a new charging system using the condensation and evaporation method to charge the submicron particles with a uniform charging performance. The monodispersed NaCl submicron particles were condensed by n-butanol vapor and grew up to micron droplets with a same size, regardless of their initial size. Those condensed droplets were charged in an indirect corona charger. The indirect corona charger consisted of the ion generation zone and the particle charging zone. In the ion generation zone, Ions were generated by corona discharge and some of them moved into the particle charging zone by a carrier gas and mixed with the condensed droplet. And finally, the charged and condensed droplets dried through an evaporator to shrink to their original size. The average charge and penetration rate of the particles before and after evaporation were measured by CPC and aerosol electrometer and compared with those of a conventional corona charger. The results showed that the average charge was $5\~7$ charges and the penetration rate was over $90\%$, regardless of the initial particle size.
