Statement of problem: Literature showed different results on the durability of bonded ceramic restoration. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to review the effect of surface treatment of ceramics in resin-ceramic bond to get predictable results. Material and method: PubMed data base was utilized to search the articles which were written in English and published in 1986 and 2006. Some electronic published articles which are forthcoming to publish in paper were also included for this review. This review article focused on the effect of acid etching and silane application on the silica based ceramics. The durability of resin-ceramic bonding, the methodology for bond strength test and resin bonding to alumina or zirconia based ceramics were compared in brief at the end of the review. Results and Conclusion: the effect of silane application can be influenced by the contaminations of saliva or solutions. Micromechanical retention by acid etching as well as silane application plays an important role in initial and durable bond strength between resin and ceramic. The use of phosphate modified resin cement following tribochemical silica coating and silane application produced best bond strength for alumina or zirconia based ceramics.
The effect of fabrication variables and microstructures on the compressive strength of open cell alumina zirconia and silicon nitride ceramics fabricated by polymeric sponge method was investigated. Bulk density and compressive strength of open cell ceramics were mainly affected by coating characteristics of ceramic slurry on polymeric sponge that controlled a shape thickness and defect of the struts. Sintering temperature was optimized for enhancement of strut strength and compressive strength of open cell ceramics. Relative density and compressive strength behaviors were relatively well matched with the predicted values. Open cell ceramics of lower relative density below 0.1 prepared by first relatively well matched with the predicted values. Open cell ceramics of lower relative density below 0.1 prepared by first coating of ceramic slurry had thin triangular prismatic struts that were often broken or longitudinally cracked. With an application of second coating of slurry shape of struts was transformed into thickner cylindrical one and defects in struts were healed but the relative density increased over 0.2 Open cell zirconia had both the highest bulk density and compressive strength and alumina had the lowest compressive strength while silicon nitrides showed relatively high compressive strength and the lowest density. Based upon the analysis open cell silicon nitride was expected to be one of potential structural ceramics with light weight.
Zirconia/alumina mixture powder was spray-dried various degree of dispersion, type of dispersants and powder content in the slurry. The quality of the granule was determined by observation of the granule shapes after spray drying and fracture of intergranular boundaries during pressing. Defect-free granules were obtained from the powders that formed weak flocs in the slurry. The granules, spray-dried from the slurry containing 32.5 vol% powder mixture and PVP as binder, were fractured completely during shaping and the sintered specimens showed a density of 99.7% and a flexural strength of 850 MPa.

HI decomposition step certainly demand catalytic reaction for efficient production of hydrogen in SI process. Platinum catalyst can apply to HI decomposition reaction as well as hydrogenation or dehydrogenation. Generally, noble metal is used as catalyst which is loaded form for getting high dispersion and wide active area. In this study, Pt was loaded onto zirconia, ceria, alumina, and silica by impregnation method. HI decomposition reaction was carried out under the condition of $450^{\circ}C$, 1atm, and $167.76h^{-1}$ (WHSV) in a fixed bed reactor for measuring catalytic activity. And property of a catalyst was observed by BET, TEM, XRD and chemisoption analysis. On the basis of experimental results, we discussed about conversion of HI according to physical properties of the loaded Pt catalyst onto each support.

The electrical and mechanical properties of the 8 mol% yittria-stabilized zirconia and alumina composites have been examined as a function of the alumina content. The 3-point bending strength and fracture toughness of the composites increased with increasing alumina content up to 20 wt%. The average grain size of the composites decreased with increasing alumina content up to 20 wt%. The composite with 5 wt% $Al_2O_3$ showed a 3-point bending strength of 310 MPa and fracture toughness about $7.8MPa\cdot\textrm m^{1/2}$. The electrical conductivity of the composites at $1000^{\circ}C$ increased slightly with increasing alumina content up to 10 wt% and decreased monotonically with alumina content. The conductivity of the TZ-8YS with 5 wt% alumina was 0.4 S/cm at $1000^{\circ}C$.
Titanium and its alloys are widely used as dental implants materials because of their excellent mechanical properties. However, the alumina and zirconia ceramics are preferred to use as the substitute of Ti implants because there is a problems in esthetics and biocompatibility in Ti implant. The the glass infiltrated alumina ceramics are studied to increase the toughness and biocompatibility. The 45S5 and soda-lime glass powder was mixed with ethanol at ratio of 1:1 and brushed on the surface of alumina. Then it was heat treated in the electric furnace at $1400^{\circ}C$ from 30 min. to 5 hours. The glass powder was controlled from 200 to $350{\mu}m$ using ball milling. After heat treatment, the glass infiltrated specimen was tested in universal testing machine to measure the bending strength. The surface microstructure of each specimen was observed with SEM. The biocompatibility of 45S5 and soda-lime glass coated alumina was investigated using PBS at $36.5^{\circ}C$ incubator. The specimen was immersed in PBS for 3, 5, 7, 10 days. After that, the surface morphology was investigated with SEM. As the results of experiment, the 45S5 bioglass infiltrated alumina show the increase of bending strength according to the increasing of heat treatment time from 30 min. to 5 hours at $1400^{\circ}C$ Finally the 1370N bending strength of alumina increased to 1958N at 5 hours heat treatment, which shows 1.4 times higher. In contrast to this, the soda lime glass infiltrated alumina ceramics shows the convex curve according to heat treatment time. Thus it shows maximum bending strength of 1820N at 1 hour heat treatment of $1400^{\circ}C$ It gives 1.3 times higher. However, the bending strength of soda lime glass infiltrated alumina is decreasing with increasing heat treatment time after 1 hour. The precipitation on the surface of 45S5 glass infiltrated alumina was revealed as a sodium phosphate ($Na_{6}P_{6}O_{24}6H_{2}O$) and the amount of precipitation is increasing with increasing of immersion time in PBS. In contrast to this, there is no precipitation are observed on the surface of soda lime glass infiltrated alumina. This implies that 45S5 glass infiltrated alumina brings more biocompatible when it is implanted in human body.

Dense oxygen ionic conducting materials can be used for oxygen separation membranes at high temperatures. However, they show relatively low permeation flux because of their large resistances. To reduce resistances and improve the oxygen permeation flux, thin dense yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ)/Pd composite dual-phase membranes were fabricated by a new approach that combines the reservoir method and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). A thin porous YSZ layer was coated on a porous alumina support by dip-coating the YSZ suspension. A continuous Pd phase was formed inside pores of the YSZ layer by the reservoir method. The residual pores of the YSZ/Pd layer were plugged with yttria/zirconia by CVD to ensure the gas tightness of the membranes. The oxygen permeation fluxes through these composite membrane were 2.0$\times$10$^{-8}$ mol/cm$^2$.s and 4.8$\times$10$^{-8}$ mol/cm$^2$.s at 105$0^{\circ}C$ when air and oxygen were used as the permeate gases, respectively. These oxygen permeation values are about 1 order of magnitude higher than those of pure YSZ membranes prepared under similar conditions.
The yttria stabilized zirconia(YSZ) thin films for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) were fabricated by an electrochemical vapor deposition(EVD) technique using YCl3+ZrCl4+H2O gas system. The YSZ films were deposited under reduced pressure at the temperature of 1000~120$0^{\circ}C$ on the porous alumina substrates. The deposition rate, chemical composition and growth morphology were investigated by SEM, XRD, EDS. The growth rates of the films obeyed a parabolic rate law, representing that the growing process is controlled by an electrochemical transport through the YSZ film. The Y2O3 content of the films was about 10 mol%, equal to the composition of metal chloride reactant gases, approximately. The YSZ films were highly dense, the growing features showed columnar structure and surface morphologies were changed with the EVD conditions.
Effects of contact damage and residual stress for two kinds of dental restorative layered ceramics, porcelain/alumina and porcelain/zirconia bilayers, were observed with Hertzian and Vickers indentation methods. Indentation stress-strain behavior of each material, strength degradation of the coating material, and crack propagation behavior in the coating layer after Vickers indentation were examined by an optical microscope. As a result, porcelain as coating materials showed the classical brittleness. It was inferred that damage and strength in two bilayer system were dependent on thermal expansion mismatch between the coating material and the substrate, which affected the strength degradation. Residual stress resulting from thermal expansion mismtch was formed in the coating layer, and specially in the case of porcelain/zirconia, residual stress was eliminated as coating thickness decreased.
Monoclinic zirconia and yttria were mixed with a stoichiometric composition of 3Y-TZP (3 mol% Yttria-stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal). The specimen was sintered at 1350$\sim$1450$^{\circ}C$ and mechanical characterization and microstructure analysis were conducted. Microhardness and fracture toughness were shown as 1357.4 Hv and 8.56 MPa $m^{1/2}$. respectively. Without alumina, they were 1311 Hv and 10.02 MPa $m^{1/2}$ respectively. By mixing two different oxides, it was possible to obtain high values of microhardness and fracture toughness. It was possible that was turned out nano-scale particle using the co-milling of high mechanical energy.
